I’ve been living in Japan for almost two years, and I’m absolutely terrible with speaking. My listening is okay, I can survive in Japan, I just can’t hold a conversation. I’ve been with my bf for almost four years who is native. I just can’t memorize anything.

Not necessarily better, it's different, meaning has pros and cons.

Pros: You can study at any time (no waiting for cards), you can easily discard cards that you already know (and never see them again), you can build custom decks easily (so no card by card).

Also, the way the game works you don't finish reviewing until you're done every card right at last once. In SRS imagine you completely forget a card after is put at a 3 month wait, even if you do it wrong you won't see that card again in maybe a whole month. Usually this doesn't happen, but when it happens is annoying (happens when confusing similar kanji for instance, like with a new kanji appears that is very similar to one you already know).

Cons: If used well, and things like the one mentioned don't annoy you much and you don't lag behind, SRS probably is more effective.

the vast majority of names have one or two pronunciations with one being overwhelmingly more commonly used so it's easy to figure out someone's name. of course with kanji being how it is you can never be sure without some evidence but realistically most people have the more common names and you can operate on that assumption. like if you see 紀夫 it's obviously going to be のりお because that's an extremely common japanese name whereas きお is not a common name and other potential readings are much more common with other kanji
