Is there any way I can play MoF on full screen? I'm aware of the 640 x 480 properties setting, but I don't like seeing the game's thumbnail and I can't even see the boss indicator on the lower section of the screen.

In EoSD stage 1, there's a possibility that the very last wave of fairies before the midboss and boss will drop a big power item. Is there a way to manipulate that, or is it random?

From what I've noticed, it's more likely to drop if you're extremely efficient with picking up all the power items in the rest of the stage portion beforehand, which is easier said than done.

>> No.22861985

>>22861939
they drop at set intervals, but there's a seed that determines your starting point. that is, if the starting point is two instead of zero, then that's two fewer small power items that need to drop before the first big one.
i don't know the range of values or if the seed can be manipulated.

>> No.22861998

>>22861939
>Most enemies have a set item to drop, but some of them are random. These enemies drop items in certain orders. If you defeat as many of them as possible before they escape, the cycle of items they drop moves faster and you’ll get big power-up items faster. But the order of things that an enemy drops is set at random between the range of 0~3 enemies worth.

the problem was always getting back through a second tough volley... and sometimes several more. it's doable, but none of it is "simple streaming" when horizontal bullets force you wide and upward.
picking yukari is not an adequate solution, and jumping wide is an obvious first step since you have to get wide anyway to avoid getting trapped. that's not advice if you're at lunatic level.
that non has always been get good or bomb. which works, since you have a surplus of power on the first two stages and since lunatic sa in general is pick aya and bomb.

Played with one for the first 3 or so years I played Touhou. I realized pretty late there was a noticable input lag due to the adapter, so I tried switching to keyboard. After a remap to WASD the switch was really easy to do and I don't felt like I lost anything. I could do actual tapping and my movement felt just as fluid, if not more.
A long time after, last Christmas, I got myself a new universal PCB and gave Touhou a try real quick with the now lagless stick ; still felt keyboard was better and still play with a keyboard to this day.
In my opinion, the most noticeable, and probably the most objective difference between the two is the effort/time it takes to go from one direction to the opposite. With the stick one need to move at least twice the activation distance, while with a keyboard it's just a matter of releasing a button and pressing another, with fingers already in position or with just a slide from down to up with the 3rd finger. To be honest though my direction stick is somewhat stiff (a Seimitsu LS-32), I'm tempted to get one that's easier to move like I the ones on the arcade cabinets. In one arcade in Japan I also saw a really good shmup player use a weird grip with the palm face up, honestly curious about that and I could try it too.
tl;dr same opinion as >>22907434 except I also use it for the PS4 Cave shmups.

>> No.22909347

>>22909075
Yeah the reason I want to stick with Arcade stick is because I play other shmups as well and I feel playing Touhou with a keyboard would take away some of my skill with a stick since Im not using it as much.
>weird grip with the palm face up
The wine grip with the stick between your middle/ring or middle/index? If so I use that style, and cant play any other way.

>> No.22909429

>>22909347
>wine grip
Yeah that one. How does it work? I imagine it removes the asymmetry on the horizontal axis compared to a regular grip (2/3rd finger and palm vs just the thumb), but moving up and down feel so weird. Am I supposed to grip the top ball with my whole fingers? Really feel like I'm missing something. Is it just a matter of getting used to? And then again, my direction stick might be a bit too stiff.

>> No.22909472

>>22909429
Not sure how to explain it, but for me i have the stick in between my middle/ring, and wrap my index and middle finger on the ball top. When pushing up I use my thumb. Not sure how to go into more detail but I guess it's something to get used to. I naturally started playing like this when I got a stick with a ball top. I'm sure there is some youtube video that goes into different styles of play.

>> No.22911297

>>22911106
To clarify that anons advice a bit: if possible, try to "plunge" through the bullets on one side so that the bullets from the other side don't reach you until afterwards, and you can focus on one at a time. This only works the bullets cluster somewhat, but that is often the case. Dodging bullets from two sides at once is genuinely difficult, and not something that you have to do that often with the right strategy.

Also, on another note, the Touhou World Cup rounds so far has had some crazy good runs, for a live event. I got nervous by just watching Mino's Yuyuko fight.

https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Imperishable_Night/Gameplay#Time_Orbs is pretty usable.

TL;DR: at any time you either want to be 1) entirely human, and shooting at stuff, or 2) entirely youkai, and grazing bullets. Doing stuff while focused swings the gauge towards youkai, unfocused swings it towards human. You can make it switch pretty quickly if you do things at the right moment. Deciding which sections to play as which mode is part of the challenge.

If you can, it is better to stay humans during most boss fights, unless its an attack where you can graze like crazy. Same goes for stages.
However, you don't really need to use the time mechanics for a 1CC. I would recommend not trying anything too crazy on later stages, and just focus on staying alive.

notes:
elen and kotohime do not actually share the speeds of kana and mima/rikako, respectively.
player sprite width is 16 pixels in all games except soew, where it's 20. tested soew-mof.
screen width for podd/pofv is 288 pixels (272 traversable). for all other integer games, it's 384 pixels (368 traversable; 364 traversable in soew). tested soew-mof.

couldn't find pc-98 data. an archived site had pofv data, but it had some slight inaccuracies. jp wiki has data for 6-8,10-12,16,17,9.5,12.5,12.8.

verified by recording and frame-advancing for several horizontal trips across the screen. accounted for reduced movement on final frame, when applicable. subtracted player sprite width from screen width, then converted to pixels/frame.

it's clear that pc-98 speeds were made with the 56.4hz refresh rate in mind. my recordings were made at 60hz, and data was later converted to 56.4hz then rounded to the expected value. to give more accurate 60hz pc-98 values, those shown above are actually converted from the expected 56.4hz values. the recorded and converted data for 60hz varied by less than .5% (except soew values, which still varied by less than 1%), so i think it's fair to simply present the converted data.

combining the above data with the jp wiki's, here's a chronology of speed for reimu and marisa.
reimu
4.23 in 2a (4.5 at 56.4hz)
2.82 in 2c (3 at 56.4hz)
3.76 in 2b,3 (4 at 56.4hz)
3.76 1.88 in 4 (4 2 at 56.4hz)
3.29 1.65 in 5 (3.5 1.75 at 56.4hz)
4 2 in 6,8,9
4 1.6 in 7
4.5 2 in 10-12,16,17 (9 with 11 aya; 6.75 with 16 autumn)
marisa
3.76 in 3 (4 at 56.4hz)
3.76 1.88 in 4-5 (4 2 at 56.4hz)
5 2.5 in 6
5 2 in 7,10-12,16,17 (7.5 with 16 autumn)

I play on stick because I dislike the way keyboard makes my movement look. You need to make sure that the surface you place the stick on is immovable; this means no stick in lap and no stick on a shaky table, because that will cripple you. I think the chief difference to keyboard is that you simply can't flail and do jerky last-millisecond (figurative usage) adjustments on stick to the same extent you can do those on keyboard, so stick movement is more premeditated and relies on you having read the pattern properly.

It was pretty funny, not gonna lie. I wanted to rush to her head after the spin but I learned it was way too risky.
But heeeeey, here it is! 1568th attempt. Got the extra damage from humping her head a bit longer at the very start. It's like betting a 50/50 on the first few knives having good angles, but it's worth it. Honestly, like 80% of the deaths are on the first few seconds or when transitioning to the loop.

TD (and the any newer game) do not store the user data in the game directories, but in
C:/users/<username>/Application<space>Data/ShanghaiAlice
So, if you just copy over your game directory, you will lose your data. This is different from the older games, where the data was saved in the game's directory. Not sure if that clarifies anything, but you're probably not the first one to lose their th[13+] data when moving to a new computer. I guess the advantage of the newer setup is that different users can have different high scores.

The only patterns that I felt were consistently easy (not including the stage before the boss starts) were Otherworld nonspell 1, Ōmagatoki, Simple Danmaku, Non-Ideal Danmaku and both Moon nonspells.

Your run can really easily end before you even make it to the real challenge (Earth nonspell 2 to Lunatic Impact) and the final four patterns after Lunatic Impact all feel like they're designed purely to force you to choke once you finally do get past it. Yes.
I noticed nobody has posted the first timer copypasta, so here are the tips. Hopefully some of this is new to you.
・Hold shift for focused movement. This makes dodging approximately three million percent easier.
・Use your bombs. USE YOUR BOMBS. You get reset to three bombs when you die. It is absolutely always better to use a bomb than to lose a life.
・You can even bomb immediately after you die! The timing is quite strict, but if you pull it off you will be restored to life.
・When dodging bullets, instead of trying to move away from bullets, try to move into areas where there will be no bullets. By figuring out what area will be safe for the next three seconds and moving there, then using those seconds to find your next safe haven, seemingly impenetrable death fields can become surprisingly doable.
・Don't put yourself against the wall or in corners. It restricts your dodging options heavily. If you do get forced into a corner, have a finger ready on the bomb button.
・If you are struggling with dodging, the best shot type for you is likely Reimu A, the homing shot type. This shot type damages the boss even if you aren't aiming at them, allowing you to ignore the boss's position and focus on dodging.
・Some spellcards are best defeated by out of the box thinking. What would happen if you flew behind a boss? Is there any way you can control the boss's actions?
・Save your replays and watch them. Learn from your mistakes.
・Practice mode is great for figuring out how to capture nasty spellcards.
The most powerful advice, and the most difficult to use, is to not get upset at yourself when you make a mistake. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, has lost a life to Rumia on a serious run. You can recover from it. The only reason losing one life in an embarrassing way will ruin your run is if you get pissed off, distract yourself, make another mistake, get more pissed off, and spiral into miserable failure.
The key to victory is the courage to believe in yourself! Never give up until you see the word "Continue"!

In EoSD, PCB and IN you can change the amount of lives per credit as well (up to 5 in EoSD and PCB and 7 in IN) by changing the "Player" option in the options menu.
Be sure to change it back to 3 after you're done though because you surely would not want to find that Player penalty * 0.2 on the All Clear screen.

Which is a great shame, because her model is far more appealing than Reimu's in most games.

I got an arcade stick a few years back, but it hasn't seen much use at all. I've tried adjusting to it on and off (most recently being today, actually) and essentially my opinions mirror >>22909075 in that tapping (eg. streaming, option alignment) don't feel as natural. Even with other games, I don't really prefer it; tried playing a bit of Mega Man with it and still found I liked keyboard more, and from what little dabbling in fighting games I remember doing, I believe I used keyboard.

That being said, I do have a rather laggy PCB, an original Hori RAP 4 Kai without the Xinput switch. I'm considering replacing it at some point, but I'm worried I'll have the same epiphany as the other guy above. Also wondering, has anybody used a Seimitsu LS-40? I have an LS-56 and think even the throw on that is too long, but I quite dislike square gates; would a truly short throw change my opinion?

And just an extra note. After you're done doing all this, you can go into the thcrap, then the bin folder, and find the file titled: thcrap_update.dll. If you drag this file out of the folder and put it somewhere else (or delete it), you won't get the annoying update procedure every time you try and start a game.

This enables you to set the window size however you want. But if you want fullscreen mode you can go into your custom.exe shortcut in thcrap and select the full screen option there.

I should say how I have solved this problem.

For older games they had hard patches, for newer games the translations all use the community patch. That is why the community patch put less effort into the translations from the older games, so the translations are bad.
I used thcrap to create 2 different patches, both named different things, both english patches.

For th10 and before, I assigned them to english patch 1, for th12 and beyond I assigned them to english patch 2.
Except, in the configuration file (.js file) for english patch 1 and deleted everything listed under "patches". So now this patch does absolutely nothing except provide a convenient link for me to click on. Meanwhile the later games are all using the community patch.
th11 is in the middle, I don't know which translation to use yet. Most likely the older one.

I've recently finished my time with EoSD (it took over 3 years of casual play), and have moved on to PCB. Having a lot of fun spamming level 6, but goddamn some of the spell cards are hard. Really bad at law of mortality, and the final two. Butterfly delusion is a crazy bitch too. Her first spell is simple enough but somehow I can't get higher than a 50% clear rate. It's really confusing to dodge diagonal bullets at the edge of the screen.

That being said, final spell is kinda nuts. I think I need to cut between the second and third bullets of the red butterflies, but it's pretty hard. For the final set I can dodge in between the two lines, but it's pretty hard to do with consistency unless you're at the middle of the bottom of the screen for me.

I hope i can 1cc this game soon, but I haven't even started on practicing any other level.

I can pretty consistently dodge the odd cycles of Doremy's first nonspell, but after hundreds of attempts in a pointdevice file dedicated purely to Doremy Sweet I still feel completely hopeless trying to dodge the even cycles. Am I overlooking something or is this nonspell actually meant to be the second hardest pattern in the game?

I practiced it some more and found a method that feels pretty consistent! If you sit roughly underneath her and don't move at all after the first cycle, it seems to manipulate the large bullets into always leaving a path open to the right of the upside-down T looking pattern that shoots directly at you.

You'll probably still need to do some fast left/right dodges like in this clip, but it never feels like you can get totally walled like with every other method I've attempted and it removes the layer of complexity of actually needing to scan for a gap since it's always in the same place.
