Even canon has issues in consistency, not to mention all the wholes that are pretty much meant to be filled by the viewers. A doujinshi focused only on things explicitly defined in canon would actually have very little, especially in regards to the abilities of characters. ZUN himself doesn't seem to take Touhou too seriously, so I don't see why some liberties shouldn't be taken for the sake of presenting new ideas or just for making an interesting scenario. It just gets silly when they step over the boundaries of what is somewhat believable in Gensokyoland.

There's a few retellings of the games and stuff, if that's what you're looking for.
