First thread archived. It's like Katawa Shoujo but with mental illness. Kind of like Grisaia but hopefully not shit. What kind of protagonist do you want to see? I'm hoping for someone with his own major issues that is hinted at but that he keeps putting off dealing with until the final (true) route, kind of like Tomoya in Clannad. I'd really hate if he's just some generic nice guy.

I think this would work well if you went with a minor psychological horror angle at least in one or two routes.
Say, characters are working through their problems together over the course of the common route, forming bonds of trust that eventually transition into romance and the various heroine's routes. Both the character's friendship and the new element of romance are then tested through some kind of chain of mysterious occurrences: in one route someone seems to be stalking the protagonist, leaving creepy messages, etc. and of course the 'creepy' girl of the group is the immediate suspect when really she's totally innocent, in another route the loveinterest claims that she is being bullied by their friends, but actually she's suffering from abandonment fears and fits of jealousy - though her mental state is bad enough that she actually believes in her own fairy tales, and the main heroine's route could focus in part on the MCs own issues (if you want to go full 4chan and make him an antisocial weirdo with a narcissistic streak, he could feel like his new gf isn't good enough for him, start thinking of supporting her as a chore or something when the initial state of lovestruck wonder starts to fade). By playing around with narration and pov, you could write those stories so that readers will become generally distrustful of the characters they have come to know over the common route, which should be very emotionally engaging when balanced against the MCs responsibility to his friends and their shared goal of overcoming their problems together.

I think that would be neat. One thing you have to be careful of with that though is the overall consistency of the narrative. Things that happen in a route should happen in all routes unless it's caused in some why by the protagonist's actions. So like if as a plot point one of the heroines gets a letter from her family letting her know that her mom's dead or something, that needs to happen in every route. Maybe that heroine is randomly absent startong on a certain day and when you play her route, you're close enough to her to find out that her mom is dead and she left to go to the funeral. A lot of amateur or mediocre VNs would only have her receive that letter in HER route. in the same way, the bullying and stalking needs to be present in clues throughout the whole story.

Yeah, I was thinking that the group dynamics could shift fairly naturally just by virtue of the romantic choices the protagonist makes. How does a person with a given mental illness react to being in a relationship vs being either friendzoned or pushed to the side entirely? A character who is content with the outcome of one route might have pretty strong objections to the developments in another, just because she doesn't like the route's main heroine, or because she considers herself her friend and believes that the MC might be using her. You're right about the need to show hints of characters psychological fault lines throughout all routes though. The paranoid girl shouldn't just be perfectly functional in all routes except the one where she has a breakdown, jealous girl should try to push her friends into making her the center of attention when she isn't the love interest, etc.

Although that interest is dwindling, this concept, if executed well, could be the next big VN here in the western world.

We've got route outlines as the most "complete" step so far. Everything else is very WIP: art, music, engine/UI and so on. Even the character names we're a little tentative to post because we're not 100% they're going to be final anyway.

I didn't draw it but I'd imagine the guy who did, did it for variety's sake. Makes sense to me, there's been plenty complaints that the designs are a little too samey, so may as well introduce some variation where appropriate. Also, I prefer the way it looks on the tall girl.
That's not the only change as things stand now, either. Even apart from things I already know are deviations from the original concepts, there will likely be more changes as the writers/artists do their thing.

The best VNs have memorable protagonists though. Tennouji Kotarou, Ushiromiya Battler, etc. So I think having a good name is important. It also helps the designers think of the protagonist as a character and not a dick with eyes or whatever.
