how i watch anime now — japanese or english subs — i watch the main screen and keep my eyes on the action ignoring the subs completely until i hear something i don’t understand. i make a mental note of that miss and then keep watching to WAIT until i hear a sentence i do fully understand, before pausing and rewinding (in case the next sentence i understand gives enough hints to reveal the meaning of the previous thing i didn’t catch). if it doesn’t, then i rewind to read the japanese or english subtitle of what i missed. sometimes it’s one word i didn’t know and the subtitle makes it clear. sometimes i did know the whole sentence but my hearing wasn’t good enough to catch it at first. sometimes even with the sub (usually just english subs in this case - since japanese subs have everything spelled out and ready to look up) i still don’t fully get what was said in japanese.

but doing it this way i’m improving my listening more than if i were either watching raw and missing things without checking them, or watching with subs and reading them the entire time/most of the time without giving my ears a chance to work alone. and i still get to understand everything that’s going on.

i wish i started doing this sooner because it really does work better than any other way i’ve tried. you just have to break the habit of always looking at the subs by default when they’re there, or trying to read them “at the same time” as listening which actually doesn’t work to help your listening (it’s too much for your brain to juggle at once in such a short time period so your brain defaults to only paying attention to reading the subs). instead get into the habit of going back and referring to the subs only AFTER you’ve actually tried to listen to the spoken japanese by itself, and listening with your ear alone wasn’t enough to understand a line or series of lines.

Honestly I could finish it pretty fast the only problem is my lack of motivation to work on it. It already covers 1000+ kanji so it's more than half finished.

I usually have a piece of kanji paper with me that I use when not at home. The audio is entirely optional and just to make it more fun and have you listen to Japanese, you can just mute your phone and read the sentence instead.
However I have actually got a phone pen and I can write my reviews using the phone scratchpad just fine. You are just imagining it would be annoying. My cards really are much better for people who actually know Japanese imo

So I started adding sentences straight from what I was reading, but since there was so much, like I'd probably encounter 100+ new words every day and I couldn't make cards for all of them, I just limited it to 20. And I didn't delete those cards and let them mature. So since I couldn't add all cards there were always words I'd try to learn naturally and words I'd try to learn with flashcards and like ~2-3 months in, once intervals on flashcards started getting big I noticed that some words that were in my anki and mature and I never failed them during reviews, when I saw them in new contexts I wouldn't remember what they mean, so I actually would just remember answer to a flashcard instead of a word. And I also noticed that some words that I didn't add to my anki and that weren't that common and I shouldn't remember them based on "forgetting curve" or whatever, I still remember those. So that was like an eye opener to me that this mental masturbation with flashcards is bullshit. That's why I say it's something everyone has to realize on their own. So that was my experience with my own deck.

2. It's much easier, not requiring me to mess every time I want to watch something with some bullshit program, instead I press my hotkey twice and got the audio on my clipboard

4. I got free control over how long my audio is, the subs2srs cards cannot take into consideration what actually matters for the context to be intact and will give you broken sentences
5. You can't control what the screenshot is
6. If the subtitles are shittily synced it will literally not work and this is the case often enough

You do not have functional cards after running them through subs2srs. You need to determine what to review first of all, then what you want to review you need to annotate with definitions, word audio, delete unneeded cards etc. which is all extra labor.

No not really. You essentially need perfect subs for subs2srs to work satisfactory. Even if alass retimes roughly correctly, it will still not be perfect. For it to be perfect the sub timing needs to start before the line is said and finish after it is said. Chances are high audio will be cut off from the start or from the end. If it captures too much you will include audio not relevant to the line. And this is all not considering that it is grabbing broken context lines in the first place.

A program has no way of determining what you should learn. I know thousands of words intuitively without ever having made a card for them. It's because if you are consuming a lot of Japanese you will not even notice yourself learning new things, but you do constantly. Anki cards work the best when you manually pick things to learn, working on areas where you are weak. For example when you notice you can't read something, and reinforce that, rather than letting a program pick everything unconditionally according to some frequency algorithm bullshit that can't take in account what your actual level or state of Japanese knowledge is.

Honestly I don't know if learning Japanese was ever actually meant to be possible. Sometimes I think about how I was likely born into a simulation world where everyone else is NPCs except for me. I imagine that the creators of this world who are studying me imagined that I would grow up and get a job like a normal person. But no, I am trying to learn a language without even leaving my room. I imagine that my creators are altering the coding of this world to fill in the holes I was never meant to explore. Kind of like how open world video games are never truly do-whatever-you-want worlds. So my creators have to improvise, and add some functions that make it seem like I am learning Japanese from animes and mangas when I am really not. Because if they didn't add these functions to the game then I would figure out the true nature of this world.

There's obviously a lot of words that I don't know but it's easy to infer the meaning from the context/surrounding words. How's your grammar? I feel like people focus too much on vocabulary/kanji, but grammar is arguably more important to get the meaning of a sentence/situation. Moreso if you have visual cues like in anime (or manga for that matter)

I do watch them with subs about 50/50, it's great practice to learn kanji and contextualize them in a sentence. People are getting their tits up in a bunch for something I never said. With my level of Japanese (which is not that high), a lot of trivial anime (slice-of-life mostly) are simple to follow, and I don't have much issues following other non-technical/non-complex anime that don't use a lot of more complex jargon.
That's not a far fetched statement to make, obviously I don't understand 100% of it because if I did I would simply be watching more complicated stuff instead since I treat this as a language learning activity.
I've stopped watching anime with English subs since about 6 months ago and have been watching most new seasons coming out and while I do miss some stuff, context is key in naturally acquiring the language, much more than flipping through a dictionary every time a word I don't know comes up. If it's a key word I will look it up and commit it to memory, but if it's just circumstantial and not necessary to get the gist of the episode, I will most likely let it go and just make a mental note about it.
