Is the story/character development more like the first one? The second one sucked in that aspect, but had good gameplay.

Well, the game just came out in English, but I'm loving it so far. And the story is sorta dealing with Lenneth again, so that's always a plus.

At least the music and character desgins are the usual awesome.

The game is really short, but I still haven't unlocked the seraphic gate(requires all 3 endings). I prefer VP1 but this is pretty much the reverse which isn't too bad.

how does the whole killing off your allies work out. are you just put into situations where you need to do it because of the fight or sin requirements. or do you just have to decide whos skill you want or something

>> No.2275037

>>2275007
There are just sometimes crazy strong enemies or really irritating requirements, like "Protect this unit from these enemies who will kill it in two rounds." None of the battles are unwinnable without using it (except the tutorial battle on it), and in fact, you get the best ending by never using it. You can do it on New Game+s to make it even easier (Wyl carries over his Feather skills).

Darius is a goddamned trap.

>> No.2275110

>>2275007
Its completely optional but it'd be best to just use it whenever you want in your first playthrough. Sacrificing people makes them pretty much unstoppable for a single battle, then they die. Wylfred also learns a new really powerful ability afterwords. Some abilities are better than others, but it'll tell you what you learn before you choose to kill them. The first archer girl you get has one of the best abilities in the game, it paralyzes everyone on the map, as an example.

Theres a newgame+ where you carry over all of your learned abilities and equipment, so just its not really necessary to hold back unless you want the challenge. On my first playthrough I only used the plume on one person.

How many people you sacrifice also affects who joins your party and which ending you get.
2+ sacrifices= C(bad end) route
1 sacrifice(before chapter 5) = B route
0 sacrifices = A(best end) route

>> No.2275136

>>2275110
You need a C ending save to unlock the Seraphic Gate anyway, so might as well sacrifice all your extra characters the first run through to make Wyl a god for the future ones.

You shut your mouth. Aside from the PIME TARADOX fuckery at the end, Silmeria was awesome. Any game where you can reduce a screen covering dragon into a hailstorm of body parts with a single arrow to the brain kicks ass.

Nice to hear you like RPG where the only interesting thing is the battle system.
You may love SO4 too, but then I'd advice you to not stare at the screen too long. The designs' ugliness may pierce your eyes.

Is this reverse psychology or something? If I wanted to get the full Star Ocean 4 experience, I'd put in Tales of Vesperia, set it on Easy, drink a quart of Drain-o, and then break the controller with a hammer.

You know what would have really helped? Targeting. How do you make an action game these days and not have any way to choose what enemy you're targeting?

Yes, Star Ocean, I know that you think I want to fight that immobile tree on the other side of the battlefield instead of the wolf chewing off my ass. Thanks.

>> No.2275472

>>2275459
wut. Every Star Ocean game has a fucking targeting system. Unless you're talking about SO4, which I haven't played yet, but I'm assuming it has one too.

>> No.2275491

>>2275472
Star Ocean 4 does not. You can lock on to the current targetted enemy, or let the CPU decide what enemy you're targetting. The problem is that if you're doing anything at all, like... say... moving or dodging, then the CPU won't update the target. You need to let go of the controller for about a second, and the target will shift to the nearest enemy. That's all the control you get.

It's not that it's plot or development was necessarily bad, it just doesn't compare to the original. but the dungeon design and the battle system are worlds ahead.

it's not really bad per se, but it's like two steps forward and then 5 steps backwards if you get what I mean.

they tried too hard to bring in tales fans yet still try to keep the people who liked the previous battle systems, AND the people who raged about the story too. Very messy.
