it's actually the shenmue i & ii bundle, i already got iii since i backed the kickstarter, even though its apparently shitty i felt like playing through the series in order
i just dont get why the fuck they'd have korean and chinese in the release but remove japanese, it's not even the only time i've seen this on steam. funnily enough the shenmue iii disc does have full japanese even though it's the console version.

thats why kids have to go to school to learn how to read and write properly (and still make mistakes in both despite having heard adults speak for thousands of hours)

Hey guys, so I came to Japan 2 days ago, after a long flight from Serbia. I came to my aunt's parents house, which are Japanese, with the intention to get better at speaking while visiting many places in Japan. The problem is, I don't speak almost at all, since the natives always talk fast and I can't really comprehend what they're saying, and if they ask me something it would be:"お腹すいた?" or "何を食べる?", it's saddening and I really need some help. My Japanese isn't that horrible, I took the N3 test this year and will probably pass, but I'm afraid to start a conversation, plus it seems like since I came to Japan my Japanese got really weird, I don't know why. It's just really discouraging because I've been listening to Japanese podcasts for 7 months, and now I come here and their Japanese is so different and hard to catch.

Most of the RTK detractors say it's useless to learn all the kanji using this method since you're not learning words but just characters. The problem though is that if you don't know how to write kanji it's gonna be a big pain in the butt to learn and acquire new vocabulary, since you're gonna need to remember the characters, the readings and (if you are interested in that) the pitch accent.
If you learn kanji through RTK though, you're gonna start understanding the logic behind kanji and you're gonna automatically start to think about even new kanji that you haven't encountered in RTK yet ( that you may find in the content you consume or in the textbooks you use) in terms of primitive, which is gonna do wonders for your ability of memorizing new words.

This is my I think 3rd or 4th time taking N5. In the exam 2 days ago I feel like I'm gonna fail it again and been crying since, but after recollecting myself, I think I finally understand why I'm failing.

Little background of skill level: I haven't actually studied Japanese seriously until maybe a few years ago. I memorized Hiragana and Katakana many, many years ago via sheer exposure (sister was full-weeb that time so I got so I got to watch her play Japanese video games a lot), and then around 2-3 years ago I started grinding vocab via lexikeet, I think, which helped me understand radicals and learned how to write kanji correctly

And then 0-1 years back from right now I've mostly been learning Japanese via Anki, did some translation projects for some 4komas and game content, but I never did take the effort to learn these vocabulary like putting them in an Anki deck and grinding each day. Right now I talk to some Japanese acquaintances every now and then online in a community I'm in, using mostly vocab to deliver broken-but-understandable Japanese. I even got a sponsored trip to Japan last month for my translation work.

Listening comprehension, IMHO is the last skill to develop in learning a foreign language.

The reason is that it's "all or nothing". You either know and recognize all of the words in a sentence, or you can't cope with the sentence at all.

The first phase of language learning is mostly theory. Mostly vocabulary and grammar. The second phase is mostly reading, reinforcing the theory, forming a good understanding of how the language is used. Additionally writing things, chatting and the like. Third phase is immersion with speaking and listening.

Those phases overlap, of course, but in my opinion that's the overall process. I've used it successfully for English and Spanish (though I haven't completed phase 3 in Spanish yet). In Mandarin I'm currently struggling towards mastering HSK 4 vocabulary, though relatively advanced.

The reason I have that word in scare quotes is because I’ve become convinced that he either:

1. Passed through nothing more than autistic brute force and luck
2. Is *deliberately* trying to give people bad advice so no one follows him
3. Both 1 and 2

His site is fucking littered with mistakes that no one of his level should ever be making: wrong reading, wrong kanji, wrong interpretations of relatively basic grammar. I estimate that about one in twenty entries on his page are just plain wrong.

This compound is properly read as ひんぴん. There is no way he could have fat-fingered that as びんびん, and that compound often shows up.

He parses it as:

(癡犬の枯骨) をねぶる “Licking the dumb dog’s dry bones” when it should be

癡犬の(枯骨をねぶる) “The dumb dog’s licking of dry bones”

Granted this kind of structure is uncommon in 和文-type stuff, but it’s absurdly common in 漢文 and 漢文訓読体, which comprises a huge part of level-one tests. I don’t get how he could make such simple errors like that except, of course, doing it deliberately.
