problems with trying to use english subbed anime to learn japanese
1. subtitles can change up the whole sentence to mean something vaguely similar but not the same as the japanese. so if you listen to the japanese and then try to refer to the eng subs to figure out one or two words you missed, they might not even be there since the sentence has been morphed into something considerably different 2. in the cases where it is possible to find the meaning of the one or two words you didn't know by looking at the english subs, you end up having to read the entire english subbed sentence(s) to figure out what those words are, since the grammar of japanese and english are in completely different order. with relatively long sentences this is impossible to do without pausing and rewinding, which funny enough, jamal says you should never do - making the only seemingly attractive "benefit" of his method (making the japanese you're hearing comprehensible by referring to the english subs) impossible to obtain, rendering his method near useless.

It was easier to recognize really common patterns. It was satisfying when I started consistently recognizing relative clauses for example.

But subjectively it felt like I still didn't know jack shit and that makes things frustrating. And it'll probably stay that way until I learn like 20k words or more.
