I can't handle this useless bitch Maria. I hate how Japanese creators feel the burning need to have braindead lolis being "cute" and then trying to make them relevant by giving them special knowledge or power. I know they think it's a clever trope because their mental handicap keeps them from leveraging their special powers and thereby ruining the story, but don't they realize it makes us want to gouge our eyes out?

I'd think it would be the opposite case: You'd like pretty much everyone so you do feel bad when they get horribly murdered. It's not much of a story if you can't feel empathy to the characters and shrug them off in preference to revealing the plot. It helps to feel Battler's position when something horrible happens to them, even if he winds up forgetting most of it. Aside from Kannon, Shannon, and Maria, I quite liked the rest of the cast since they had a lot of different sides to them.

Example being how Rosa was generally weak and passive, but when it comes to protecting her daughter she'll rip the ballsack off any demon and send them crying back to hell. Kyrie was also a seemingly vulnerable character, being the "genius that gets killed because they're too smart" that a lot of bad guys go after, except she turned out to be the Motherfucking Flash with a rifle in her hand. Rudolf almost fell into being the degenerate womanizing player with no strengths, except he's as smooth with a gun as he is with the ladies. Kyrie and Rudolf together are like the combined forces of Batman and Clint Eastwood, requiring the equivalent of two anti-god cannons that fire heat-seeking death to stop them.

I get the trope, I really do -- moe little girl with special knowledge and/or power who can make her moe relevant to the story by using it a mechanism for keeping essential plot points hidden (via mental or behavioral handicaps).

But Maria simply doesn't fit -- in more ways than one. Even in a story where the characters all wear things in...questionable taste such as her mom's napkin, Battler's Saturday Night Fever studded boogaloo bellbottoms and platform shoes...but Maria has a little black queen England crown thingy perched awkwardly on her head. wtf is up with that?

Maria fits better than most, as it's implied that the occult symbols are used BECAUSE Maria is one of the few people able to recognize them. Same with the whole "Halloween for Maria" thing and the first twilight murders in EP2.

As for the fashion thing....we'll, agree with you, but Maria's a big fan of the witches and the witches clothing is a bit...unique.
