you can assign the radicals any name you want to, just like the kanjidamage guy did. the point of radicals is to learn how to tell similar-looking kanji apart, but you don't even need rtk or kd or kklc for that. (note: radicals in the rtk sense aren't the same as 部首)
ol' jamal learned radicals by looking kanji up through a dictionary that organized them through their radicals, not once using any anki decks along the way.

yeah exactly. reading was just too overwhelming before i started making sentence cards for exactly this reason. nothing was really getting solidified because there was too much new stuff coming at me at once. sentence cards were like an incubator for the new things i was learning. and of course those understandings i gained transferred to things i read later, pretty quickly.

I know this might sound like really not important or vague but for me this is an important issue since the last thing that I'd like to do is to do something culturally offensive. Ok so the thing is I'm really wanting to get this tattoo that says "Geisha's trainee" or "Geisha's apprentice". You might ask why; well, I've come cry fond of the concept of the geishas trough the years, how graceful and wise they are, the perseverance and and passion for what they do and how they put so much effort in achieving their full potential in so many aspects of art and entertainment. So the meaning of the tattoo I would be getting is that: I will never achieve to be like a geisha since I will always be learning and trying my best to be like one in the aspects of life (like being wise over the things that come and knowing how to respond gracefully in an awkward set, etc.) And so I will always would be in this state of constant learning (with I really like).

But the problems are:

Im not Japanese nor a woman, so I find this potentially problematic since I really don't want this tattoo to be seen as cultural appropriation or anything offensive at all.
I'm definitely not sure how "Geisha's Trainee/Apprentice" is written in kanji properly and since is a tattoo, and its potentially forever and is something that is meaningful and important to me I want it to be really well written.
So yeah please give me your comments on the issue, and if you know how to write this phrase please let me know I would hugely appreciate it.

I was in the diner of my university using anki to study kanji by writing them down in my notebook. Suddenly I hear someone behind my say "Wow! You're studying Chinese?" Read about radicals + a lot of practice.
Find out what exactly you're trying to learn and why then practice that.
So if you just want to read/watch Japanese and not that interested in speaking/writing then you should focus on that. If you are actually interested in learning how to write keep in mind that you first need to learn how to read. You don't need to master it but you might wait until a word with that kanji has matured before placing that kanji in a writing deck.

But I also can't write them down on a whim even if I know them, which is quite infuriating. I guess it comes with practice, I should be patient. Limit your answer time within 5s then review the back if you do less than perfect. Don't be afraid to fail a card. That's fine. If you keep failing a card it's a sign you don't even understand the card. Anki is for memorizing something you understand. If it's the kanji part you're having trouble with then try dissecting it into parts (radicals) you can recognize.
