It's amazing how easy it is to delude yourself into thinking that your comprehension is a lot better than it really is.

Watched Kemono Friends raw a while back and thought I understood almost everything. Rewatching it now with Japanese subs and realizing just how many words I didn't know and by extension how many sentences I couldn't have understood (despite thinking I did) because of it.

I've had this experience with a few shows now.

I honestly think LoGH is the absolute pinnacle of anime and will never be trumped by anything and part of the reason for that is simply because the environment changed
you can't actually make a show appealing to adults dealing with intriguing themes with the same breadth as LoGH anymore because everything new has to appeal to the zoomer brain desiring flashing colors and two dimensional transparent characters
there is a lot more factors to it but really you won't convince me that there is even a possibility something better than LoGH could ever be made again

I'm confident I have the raw intelligence to have become a world competing master at whatever I would have liked if I simply put my mind to something and really dedicated myself to it
whether it's sports or e-sports or whatever the fuck and I got a taste of my raw potential a couple years ago when I was obsessed with a certain thing and achieved something really remarkable
but afterwards I drifted into this never-ending mediocrity where I only wasted my time listening to music, watching movies, playing games and just burning up my lifetime with stupid distractions and it has resulted in me not realizing any of my potential, I really regret it
it's not too late for me to turn things around but I think my brain structure is just fucked now, I'm a zoomer without an attention span addicted to social media incapable of concentrating on something for more than 20 minutes

I never got "decent" at reading but I learned 5k words while reading every day for 8 months and when I started trying to listen it was a goddamn nightmare. Maybe if I read more and had like triple the vocabulary then transitioning to listening would be much easier? But even basic phrases that I could instantly read I couldn't process while listening and that's still somewhat true after 3 months of listening but I've noticed significant improvement. I wouldn't advise you wait, but I bet there's people who know way more than me here whose experiences contradict mine so I don't know, just go with your gut.

Well I'm certified MENSA member and I didn't really learn anything from LSD. It just showed me how amazing life can be and made me feel again the spark I had when I was younger. Made me start all the projects I planned in detail years ago but then abandoned just after start. Made me remember the dreams I had and make them feel more real so I actually started pursuing them again. I did more in those 3 months from when I took LSD than in the last 3 years. It won't really do the job for you but it will make you focused and determined enough so you can actually put in the work since that's what stopping you really. Yeah. It's not a magic pill that will give you truth from another dimension. You need to already roughly know how to do the stuff you want to do. It just helps you get there by making imagination more real. It definitely won't be able to help everybody but it's worth a try.

You won't get out of depression in one day. It's a gradual process. LSD can help you make small changes. Like I tried multiple times to start taking a cold shower in the morning every day but could never stick to it and always failed. I did research on how healthy it is and knew it would be nice feeling after you get used to it. So I just took a cold bath on LSD and focused on how it felt. Man I can't believe my 280€ are producing noise in my right ear when NC is activated. Sony did a shoddy job on this one, or I suppose the Chinese factories did. I'll probably send this one back and get a new pair from a local vendor.
Using WH-1000XM3 right now and really happy with them except the noise issue. Only other problem I suppose is the fact that you can't multi connect to several devices or quickly switch between devices but that's not a big deal. Also considering other headphones but those seem to be the best on the market right now.

It's not really up for debate, I have my kanken deck which covers all those kanji as well as the kanken simulation (which is pretty much equivalent to the real test) which I can pass with almost full marks. I'm finished with level 5 right now and will probably do 4 soon.

it's pretty much impossible to say how much effort i actually invested but it's safe to say i was not a believer in the input method (or my ego wouldn't allow me to face the reality of it) until basically 2 years ago or so after i came back from japan and realised i still was really shit. before that my exposure to native material was limited (ie i never watched raw anime or read books etc). i think i had a lot of accumulated knowledge about japanese which benefited my in my switch to input method though, but ultimately i didn't really know japanese at all (despite having n1 from anki+textbook grinding)

ive known about AJATT etc since i started but i kind of thought it was a cult cause of how khatz wrote his blog, so i dunno i think i had some aversion to it. i also just thought id get there eventually by doing what i was doing cause i wasn't super obsessed with being good, ive never been a massive consumer of japanese content so it wasn't like i was watching anime thinking "i really wish i could understand this". ultimately i really had little interaction with the language and was just playing csgo and shit all the time and doing my daily anki reps.

anyway the main impetus for change probably being i have a friend who is also studying and he was starting to get really good just by watching anime and shit and he kept trying to get me to just do immersion, and eventually i spent like 50 painful hours watching anime without subs and realised i was getting better pretty quickly just from that since i knew a lot of vocab already.

I was offered to take Japanese classes from a professional from Japan but the courses are late at night and I don't feel like I have the commitment for that since I have responsibilities. the djt route is extremely simple, and also extremely repetitive.
watch/read japanese media every day, make vocabulary cards off unknown vocabulary (approximately 20 per day is the recommended amount), review those cards, keep on consuming media.
it's up to you to decide what's the minimum amount of japanese media consumption you want to do per day. 45 min, 1 hr., 1hr. 30 min, 2hr., etc.
there's never going to be any switching around between textbooks (since you'll only ever use the same dictionary or set of dictionaries) or exploring any words used in genres you're not interested in.
it's all meant to be guided by whatever you like/care for, so it will only be as disorganized as whatever your interests are like.

10 month update -

it's been exactly 10 months ever since i started core6k and have read or watched japanese stuff at least one hour a day every day.
back then, i couldn't even read children's stories written entirely in hiragana, and didn't know verb conjugations.
now, i can at least easy-ish light novels and visual novels with the aid of a dictionary. real literature is still too hard for me. i still occasionally fail to understand stuff that's somewhat abstract or that's got a slightly unusual sentence structure.
yeah, i get the fact that i still suck, and that i didn't even put that much time into this, but i'm at least better than i was a year ago.

ciaran did all of core10k and used textbooks to bring himself up to n1 level before he started mining vns, watching 時代劇 TV series, and hardcore quizzing, so he's got a huge advantage over anybody who just did tae kim's guide and core2k/vncore before reading yotubato or flyable heart.

i think it's probably because of that i+1 thing matt has talked about. it's a lot easier to fill in small gaps in your knowledge with mostly uncommon words if you've already got your bases covered than it is to try to build both your bases and try to achieve a proper comprehension of comparatively "challenging" material.

just to make it clear i think anki is useful for learning words cause it keeps it in your head so you don't have to look it up next time you see it but ultimately you need to see/hear a word many times to actually acquire it because words have a lot of meta info that you cant get from a definition (e.g. when it's typically used, what kind of emotional impact it has, the nuances when compared to similar words c.f. shoujiki and sunao). if you just input for a million hours then you'll probably not require the initial help from anki. that being said it seems like a lot of non anki users who just read VNs don't actually know the readings properly so who knows.

i agree with this for the most part, or almost entirely.
i went 3 months not using anki at all after 5 months of hardcore anki-ing, and i think there were only 20 words i was able to acquire in addition to the ones i'd already learned. many of the ones i'd learned before i ended up forgetting (amongst some extremely basic examples: 控える and 鍋) were words that i occasionally saw, but that since i didn't even immerse that much (only 1-2 hours a day on average, since i was busy doing school stuff), i wasn't even able to remember what they meant or how to read them. i just knew they looked familiar.
of course, there were some words that i greatly benefitted by being exposed to them often within a specific context (especially "strong" words like 滅ぼすor 蝕む), but there were plenty of other words (some of which were much more basic) that i came across that will probably end up being much harder for me to remember without anki cards.
as soon as i picked mining back up, i started to feel like i was actively expanding my vocabulary, instead of letting words wander before me.
