By the way I recently discovered the following project: an open-source, cross-platform RPGMaker2000/2003 player: https://easyrpg.org/

I've only found a quirk or two when playing Yume 2kki on it for several days, and it seems to play Yume Nikki just fine.
I've found it better on Linux than using WINE, so thought I would recommend it.

While RPGMaker2000 itself ran mostly fine, it was a royal pain to set up because it used SHIFT_JIS encoding, which Linux simply doesn't handle well.

why does this game make me feel an intense feeling of nostalgia and peace when i play it nowadays?

Nothing really that bad was happening in my life when i played it. And i remember playing it i often got bored of looking around and looked up guides on how to find all the objects.

You know how "you never forget the first time you experience something". This game is the opposite. How i played before sucked I am in utter bliss playing now and i can't figure out why.

Which one of the derivatives is your favorite?

I always preferred Yume 2kki, as a felt it has a good mix of light-and-dark, has many densely populated areas, has a truly surreal mix of influences, and is simply amazingly large.

.flow was very emotionally compelling and fleshed out, but was overall too dark and dreary for me to truly get drawn in.

Two others of personal note, LcdDem for the OST (ignoring the increasing infamy of the creator), and Oneshot for making the first compelling story in a genre largely defined by the lack of an overarching plot.

The other games that I've tried are either too sparse or unfinished for me to really dig into them.

Somewhat ashamedly I've actually never completed Yume Nikki despite playing it a number of times over the years. I guess mostly because I didn't want to look at a guide, and thus whenever I played it I'd usually become lost. While I don't really mind getting lost, and I get it's part of the experience, it's not very conducive to finishing the game.
This thread inspired me to pick the game up once again, starting with a fresh file, with the intention of actually completing it this time. While there are things I remember from previous playings, or just, from knowing things about the game, I still don't know or don't remember tons of stuff. I still don't want to look up a guide, so it might take a while to complete, but I'm fine with that.
Playing the game some once again has given me the same sort of feelings it did in the past, so I'm happy that didn't go away or something.
I've been intrested in fangames as well but have always figured I ought to finish it first, so I've not touched them.
I don't exactly know why I'm making this post, but, I wanted to thank OP and other anons for inspiring me to play the game once again.

So Yume Nikki was a pretty big turning point in my life in which I truly started to appreciate and seek surreal artwork. Since then it's really been something that I resonate with - especially pieces that feature cute girls in melancholy.

After a decade of immersing myself into works like it, I actually tried psychedelics for the first time last year. I felt like I truly understood the landscapes that I stared into for so long. The frequently seen concepts in a lot of these dreamscape works of art really presented themselves to me in a profound way. I felt like I had finally headed the calls of a world that had beckoned me for years. Whenever I trip, I feel "at home" and that I'm in a place more real than the reality I experience in my everyday sober state. I still only trip maybe once every 6 months, but I always feel such an uplifting sense of comfort and peace that extends for months after.

Thanks for introducing me to this wonderful world, Madotsuki. I understand now.

I'll echo that OneShot recommendation. There's stuff like dialogue and characters and actual progression in it that moves it somewhat far from being a clone, but if you liked the atmosphere of Yume Nikki, I'd say there's pretty you'll enjoy this too. The setting is intricate in a dreamlike sort of way, and like Yume Nikki, it uses its soundtrack to great effect.

If you're looking for something a little bit different, try Rain World.
It's not really similar at all to Yume Nikki, but it does have a lot of exploration, a quiet melancholy atmosphere and a deep story and lore that you can uncover if you explore deeply enough. Despite it being a very different game to YN, it kept reminding me of it as I played it.
It is a very difficult game though, maybe a love it or hate it kind of thing. In any case, worth a shot i think.

I was talking with them at Anime Expo a few years ago (they were at a booth a publisher), and it honestly skipped my mind to ask.

Though for what it is worth, I think a lot of people who have been long-term Koronba/LcdDem fans have been kind of off-put about the whole copycat/"respect" scene that's emerged (even if I personally enjoy it).

I honestly did not have many problems in regard to that, only other technical issues. If you invoke your Wine prefix with Japanese UTF-8 locale (ja_JP.UTF-8), the ANSI versions of the Win32 API correctly interpret their input as Windows-932, while either one should end up encoded as UTF-8 e.g. for filename lookup.

Same. I found out about YN because the featured article in encyclopedia dramatica back in 2010 or 2009 was Uboa, and i was absolutely HORRIFIED of the game. It was my first exposure to psychological horror, rather than conventional stuff like spooky demons, serial killers, ghosts and whatnot. Guess i couldn't understand it, but even though i was really disturbed for it i was fascinated and kept coming back for more.

Mado doesn't really seem that exceptional for her interpersonal relationships.
Actually she reminds of a suicidal friend of mine, who has gone through some trauma in life, has a great tendency to alienate others, is prone to episodes of mania, and spends most of his time making art of a very idiosyncrastic nature. I really don't have much to say, as I feel obnoxiously judgemental, but that's not an existence I'd wish on others.

I played most of it I think. I got stuck on the school or something and had no Idea what to do or something. I don't really remember honestly it was mediocre at best.
The side scrolling thing wasn't so bad but it's gets old immediately.
Overall is mediocre and some "gameplay" ideas they got in ruin the classic yume nikki experience. I agree that this game may need a little bit of streamlining so it's more enjoyable while being able to let you get lost on it.

The one thing I actually liked was the Pink Ocean. It was a bit lame game play wise and even tho the graphics are mediocre I really loved how it looks like. The sun reflection, the waves, the sugar-like floor and the pan up when you finally reach Poniko's house making it such a grandiose place.
The uboa event it's super lame btw, don't even bother.
The plains were another alright place, it's 3D and you can explore like you do in Yume nikki. They ruined my favorite place tho, the barracks settlement. I'd say only at first, after you kill the poop hair effect monster thingy it kinda becomes a nice place to visit.

I'd say it's a nice "what if" some parts hace potential and that pink ocean comes to show you that a 3d modern recreation made with actual love and budget would be super amazing.

I don't remember how I found out about Yume Nikki. I remember it has been with me since I've had a PC. When I was around 10 (2008ish) and at first I was so scared of it but I kept coming back . I remember I finished with the help of a guide, I got the list of effects and their location and some vague instructions of how to get anywhere so I could get a bit lost but with a direction. It was great.

In recent years I play it like once or twice each year when I get into a certain mood. As a child I used to see people besides my familly as strange creatures or feeling like I exist in this world but nobody is aware of it, that I am just a bystander. When I get in that mood I play Yume nikki. I guess I feed that whole sentiment for a few days until it's satisfied, putting it to rest for a while.

It has influenced my life and likings in a lot of ways. I also have a dream dairy where I draw the weird dreams I have, not all of them are good or whatever but it's fun to remember and to write them down and do a drawing about them.

Yeah, according to them some of the staff were huge YN fans. The they were either too unexperienced or KADOKAWA choked them in budget and time.

How did your cosplay end up turning out anon? I hope you had a fun time at Comiket and things went well.

>> No.22797790

This might seem like a dull question, but what would shadow demons care about?
They're apparently affected by some sort of force at least. Though I guess the vagueness of their form makes such a nature hard to discern.

Light probably among some things I can't think of. They do seem to be fading out from approaching sources of light in the picture itself, though that doesn't mean they couldn't have more paranormal qualities to them. I say maybe they're able to move while not being observable? Complicated..

The faded out parts might just be the shadows' shadows

What draws you towards Yume Nikki in general? Why do you think you keep coming back to it over and over again?

More than anything, the idiosyncratic nature of it.
While plenty of games are deeply influenced by it, none have ever been able to directly copy its nature.

i was at comiket the year before last and saw a couple of yume nikki themed stands and a madotsuki cosplayer, it was super cool to see that there's still a scene for it after so many years. did you see some this winter?

I'd also throw in Quote as well, though I guess Cave Story has a significantly different feel to those three.

You made me curious about something and you may be interested on hearing it too.
Can you believe that Madotsuki is older than Quote?

>> No.22839787

>>22839551
Huh, that actually is surprising.
I think it's the even greater retro feel of Cave Story which made me assume Quote is older.
Actually, did it take longer for Yume Nikki to get a footing in the West relative to Cave Story?

>> No.22840926

>>22839787
From what I can remember, yes it did.
Cave Story started becoming popular in the West around 2005/2006 while Yume Nikki only was starting to become known around late 2007/mid 2008.

>> No.22845915

>>22840926
I'd imagine that partly has to do with the greater accessibility of the former. At the very least, I'm certain Cave Story has had a larger popularity than Yume Nikki, though it is not as if Yume Nikki hasn't been a critical inspiration behind many popular Western games (which I don't think need listing).

But really, that's getting a bit off-topic, I suppose.

I guess my claim was overstated.
I should have said that it was a fundamental inspiration to many Western walking simulators. The obvious one I was thinking of was Undertale, but I felt mentioning it was beating a dead horse at this point.
