If you're willing to spend cable retard money, you can get one of the many IPTV subscriptions that include 50 channels and on-demand for a week or so for 30 bucks a month, but I've never seen a point in that shit.

Japanese TV is full of this weird Xenophilic "hey, here's what foreigners think of X" shit. It's very boring to me, but Japs seem to like it.

YOUは何しに日本へ？is the biggest example. It's a parade of misfits but there's some good cringe comedy in there from time to time. They've interviewed me in the airport twice but I'm too boring for them to put in the show.

I can see why though, the country feels so closed off in general that it's only natural for the population to be curious about the rest of the world, at least through the TV lens of "everyone on the planet thinks we're the best". YOU is the worst fucking show in the world, it's like a weekly Davido-kun exhibition and it really paints foreigners as completely fucking soulless, because tourists are soulless and nobody has a decent reason for visiting a country for a week or two.

If you like 千鳥 I recommend checking out 相席食堂 which is pretty much an hour of them ツッコミing a celebrity/comedian's ロケ every week. They typically feature celebrities who wouldn't usually do solo ロケ, giving 千鳥 (who are considered ロケ veterans) lots of material to take the piss out of. It's often hilarious.

It's theater acting, the opposite side of method acting. It's become norm after so many decades, if not a century, displaying this kind of acting in front of the camera. That's why you'll only see the method in film since it's seen as an auteur choice over expected technique.

Fantastic movie. A 2 hour movie that didn't feel like one. I think this is a good double feature with Hanging Gardens (2005) if you want to see some bleak but bittersweet family movies.

Well, it’s only 8 episodes. Probably one of the better dramas from this year but something went wrong in the final 3 episodes. I’m not sure if the novel’s basing and ending are the same but the aftertaste wasn’t as good as I thought it would be.

I stopped watching in the middle of ep. 4. It's just not as interesting as the first season and ended up meandering through an aimless plotline. You could argue it's slice of life but there are way better series for that and, why this one? Why take a story that was essentially finished, only to reverse development and cover the same ground without adding anything meaningful to it. S1 wasn't by any means a masterpiece but it was fun, which is something this one isn't.

About the batsu game? I honestly don't care. I've been watching it for a long time, even if it's repetitive, given that it's a one SP per year it really doesn't matter that much. I imagine this is old news to most of you but it came to me as such a shock that I feel obligated to make a post and see if other people are confused about something.

The batsu game in Gaki no Tsukai isn't "no laughing" at all: it's no smiling or laughing. In Japanese the word for laugh (笑う) is a synonym for smiling. Often it will be used for big smiles: it does not implicitly imply laughter, although it includes laughter. Basically, the Gaki no Tsuaki batsu game includes both smiling and laughter. I was watching one for the first time, and primed by all the people calling it "no-laughing" and the subs calling it no-laughing, I was confused by all the times they got punished without laughing. It took about 10 minutes for me to realize the translator's mistake.

Anyway, I think anyone fluent in Japanese will notice this very quickly like I did, especially since it's very obvious they are getting punished without laughing very often. My question is: How many people DIDN'T notice this? How come the translators never fixed this? Why is it still wrong on wikipedia? This is kind of an autistic post I know, but it's a pretty confusing error with a clear fix so I'm wondering how many people were also confused by it, and if anyone knows why it was never fixed.

As a final note this is my the first batsu game episode I'm watching (high school). Maybe other ones are different.

I would argue it is kind of a big deal since it is unarguably "No-Smiling". Now that I've watched more I can say that for sure - there's jokes about them covering their mouths to hide the smiles and all that, even. You can see them constantly forcing poker faces since even a slight smile could get them out. No-Laughing is just factually wrong and doesn't make sense at these points, which are frequent. "Why is he out even though he didn't laugh?" is something you will have to frequently ask yourself, until you realize No-Laughing was wrong all along.

To be honest this seems to me to be evidence of people not really paying attention during shows and just kind of letting it go in one ear and out the other. It seems unfeasible for such a grievous error to last this long otherwise. And I do mean error, 笑う is an annoying word to translate but I can tell you as a pro translator that when it means "smile" it's wrong to translate it as "laugh". No-Laughing isn't really more catchy than No-Smiling since they follow the same structure.

Well, in the end I guess it isn't a big deal in the sense this is comedy television, and TV doesn't really matter. But I think that would be kind of a weird position to take in a thread centered around TV.

I actually disagree, they lose more from smiling than laughing. It's a lot easier to smile than to laugh and they let smiles slip in more often than they burst into laughter. Laughing might seem better on the surface, which is why the error probably happened in the first place, but in the actual show it's all about the smiling. They have cameras trained on them to detect the smiles which wouldn't be necessary if they were just looking for laughs, which are more noticeable (and again attention is drawn to this fact).

I do think this is a major translation issue, since it's the name of the whole trademark series and it's wrong. The bad grammar and stuff are issues, but they're minor in comparison to the actual name of the series being wrong. Not sure how you can get more major than the name being wrong. I also think that your defense of "laughing" is further evidence that the error has persisted since people don't really think about the show and just let it slide in one ear and out the other, as reflected by your incorrect statement that laughing is what makes them lose most of the time.
