Why was a supposedly "professional" translation vastly inferior to the average fan-translation patch? (I mean, seriously, "Naturally, I knows the hacker"? "Tooling test"? Using a blatantly obvious find-and-replace that occasionally turned "you that" into "Kidat"?) I guess I applaud Hirameki (or at least its dead, rotting corpse) for trying to get VNs to English-speaking audiences, but if all their work was like this...no wonder they went bankrupt.

More relevantly...is anyone working on making it better? Or hell, even translating the other Infinity games?

Even though I raged at "tooling test", I don't really blame Hirameki for making such a blatant mistake.

Unless you're into SF or study CS, you're not gonna be able to figure out WTF is チューリングテスト by the phonetics.

But then again, they could have just fucking googled it.

I tried editing the script file to see if I could proofread it, but it crashes if you don't keep the same string length.

Yeah.

Best bet would be to port it to a different engine and then work from there. A lot of work though.

Hirameki was just far too ahead of its time. These games came out in English 4-6 years ago, and no one really cared about translated VNs back then.

Ever17 came out in America in 2005. It took them almost two years to break even with the game.

I think you're deluding yourself a bit if you think anyone (besides, you know, raging weeaboos like us) cares about them now. How many people do you know who would be willing to spend time on their computer (or hell, even their PSP) clicking through hours and hours of text when they could be playing Halo? I mean, even MGS4 had a few minutes of gameplay in between the story sequences.

VNs will never sell in the West. Ever. It's a shame, really, but it's true.

I wouldn't say that VNs will never sell in the West. The fanbase is growing, just very slowly. It will certainly be awhile before it's a viable business though.

Well, I'm mostly concerned about the Western anime fandom. VNs are a lot more popular with this crowd now than they were a few years ago. Even /a/ level Bleach and Naruto fans are aware of things like Fate/stay Night.

>>VNs will never sell in the West. Ever. It's a shame, really, but it's true.

I think VNs are currently at the same place manga was in the 90's. Back then people thought that manga would only be an extremely niche thing in America, but look at it now!
