Really my only issue with Reimu being in Smash anyway is the fact that the Smash fanbase is so fucking toxic. I have a friend who literally wouldn't stop complaining about the the Sans mii costume for weeks.

Pretty sure back in like May or June they did actually confirm that they are working on a PS4 port and eventually a Switch port. So it actually is happening but its not like it means a whole lot. Its merely coming to consoles which isnt that surprising given that ZUN has said that major decisions for Tasofro's games (such as ports and translations) would be entirely up to them. This doesnt elevate Reimu's chances to get in Smash in the slightest since the old requirements for a character getting in were tossed anyway.

Mega Man has a rich and varied history with many interesting locales and music to pool from, but a good 90% of MM content in Smash comes from just the classic series, and half of that comes from the second game alone. Considering how EoSD's synonimity with Touhou rivals and arguably beats MM2's with the Mega Man series as a whole, I fear that Touhou will fall to similarly disproportionate representation in Smash.

I have my own definition which I use because it adds up to how other fanbases are structured like.

Basically, any fanbase of anything can be divided into three major groups: fans, casuals and posers. Beyond that you have outsiders which are people who do not consider themselves part of the circle. The following can be applied to anything: vidya, sports, anime, music, etc.

Fans are those who dig into the hobby, going past the entry level and consuming the source material. They do not need outside influence to keep digging, they just do it. How deep they go varies and the deeper you go, more respected you will be by others. In other words, the more useless trivia about that thing you learn, bigger your e-dick is.

Them you have casuals, they are similar to fans but they never got past the entry level of the hobby. They have no interest in going further and are satisfied with the little knowledge they got. They lack that natural "push" that makes one want to dig deeper. Casuals get shit on by fans because they lack deeper knowledge and cannot bring new information to discussions about the hobby.

In the context of Touhou anyone can be considered a primary if they still show interest in consuming the source (the games and arguably the print works). A casual who still plays the games without the need of outside influence can still be a primary, regardless of having a 1CC or not.

Finally, you have the posers AKA the fans of the fandom, the secondaries. Unlike the other two they do not have interest on the source material but on something associated with it. Another thing is that they will still claim to be fans anyways (emphasis on this part, some 12 year old spouting memes isn't a secondary). Both fans and casuals will shit on them.

The entry level will be the content that is more commonly accepted as the entry point to the series (it can be EoSD in this case). The source can also be argued about in some cases, some people may tell you that just reading the manga doesn't make you a primary. Subcommunities will also play a role into this. You can be a hardcore fan inside 2hu circles but still a casual in the bigger shmup circle, or a hardcore shmup fan who is a casual in the bigger "video games" circle. Shit varies a lot.

I can name a few reasons:

1. HAL/Sakurai loves shmups yet we haven't seen a shmup character showing up yet, even though it's such a historically important genre. It could be due to most of the big names starring non humanoid spaceships (unless they pulled a captain falcon where you play as John Marine). Twinbee could work though.

2. They could want a character to represent indies since they are a big part of video game culture. So far we only got a costume and Touhou would be a no brainer choice since it's both older and more influential than any popular indie nowadays. It also has geographical advantage.

3. Touhou is popular with a crowd that doesn't overlap much with Nintendo circles. Pandering to a new demographic means more people buying Switch consoles, copies of smash and the DLC by giving them a reason to give a shit about it.

Keep in mind that I am only giving reasons to why Nintendo would want Touhou. Some of these arguments can be applied to other franchises too.

That’s not true, and it also doesn’t make a difference at all. ZUN was asked about putting Touhou in other games, he brought up the golden goose that everyone wonders about anyways. NDA isn’t broken
