I can read it just fine but I hear the sounds and don't recognize them as words until I look at the subtitles and then listen to the sentence again. If I come across this kind of sentence again I still won't recognize it. It will probably take like a dozen encounters before I finally process it and that's probably only if I have subtitles to help confirm what I just heard every time. I just see others talk about how listening is no problem for them and came easily with reading but it's not been my experience.

I have a question for people using anime cards. I only know a thousand or so words from the VN core, so when I start mining visual novels, there are plenty of sentences where there is more than one unknown word, which means I can't make an anime card out of that sentence. For these sentences, do I make word cards for all of these new words?

So if there are multiple unknown words, try to understand the sentence, and then move on to the next sentence. Those unknown words will eventually be in an i+1 sentence, and then I can add that in anime card format to Anki. Thanks.

if you've got more than one unknown word per sentence, make a plain vocabulary card.
what i've often had to do is to make separate cards for each unknown word in a sentence, and out of all those words that i made a card for, i've only pasted the entire sentence for one of those cards (since i assume that, at least on the first round, anki will show me cards in the same order in which i created them, so that i can see the other unknown words prior to seeing the full sentence again)

If you understand the basic logic behind the language then you should be able to intuit the meaning behind words even if you haven't seen them before, or make a good guess at what the proper word is to represent a certain concept.

People who think they need to suspend cards they know well are matt sentence drones that need a crippling 3 hours a day for reviews and spend 40 seconds on one card lmao. I'm probably explaining badly, but just trust me. Read and listen, look up words, try to figure out what sentences mean (but don't stress yourself out over it and don't get upset or angry with yourself when you fail), and over time the pieces of the 日本語 puzzle will just fall into place.

The more time you spend per day, the faster this process will take place.

What I do is I watch shit I'm interested in anyway with optional commentary.
For example, I can watch people playing vidya I like and get enjoyment out of that while listening to the commentary and it doesn't really matter if you understand it or not, because you're enjoying the gameplay.
I've found this really helps learn words and their uses, because you see things happening in context.
For example, I was watching someone play a police game and he breathalized someone, then said "めちゃ酔う", now if I heard that sentence normally I would think "What? よう as in task? Very... task? What the fuck does that mean?" but because of the context (person being drunk in the game) it made sense.
So my advice would be find something you like and then find a Japanese person commentating over it.

it's ultimately a fine balance of finding content at your level which is also interesting to you personally. as such, recommendations are very hard to make.

language learning is a highly independent process and you've really got to learn, the sooner the better, to hunt down content on your own. find something that seems interesting, give it a go, and judge for yourself whether or not it's at an appropriate level for you (and equally importantly, whether or not it's enjoyable).

if something is absolutely kicking your ass to the point where you're understanding next to nothing, it's probably best to put it aside and come back to it later. though in the beginning, your experience with pretty much anything will be like this, and there's not really anything you can do but grit your teeth and ride it out with the knowledge that "it gets better".

Reminder for new learners, don't skip the basics. Here I am at 2 1/2 years of fairly consistent study, and i've focused so much on kanji (1000+), vocab (4000+), reading, listening, etc, that i've skipped some crucial grammar points.

I'm just now learning how adverbs are made and used which makes comprehension while reading/listening that much easier. Not sure how I skipped over it but it seems everyone just assumes you'll learn these first and goes straight to focusing on vocab and kanji.

I just started reading yotsubato and I'm already totally overwhelmed ~20 pages in.. even after looking up unfamiliar words or grammar I still usually struggle to make sense of the sentence. And every verb seems to have tons of unfamiliar inflections and helper verbs attached to it..

Anime cards are better in every way. You can review them much quicker, make your pronunciation better due to having both the word and sentence audio to which you can add pitch accent information if you care about that, the creation process is ultimately also faster as you as you become more advanced simply create less cards from one episode. The idea of turning an entire episode into subs2srs cards when you will realistically need 1 or 2 cards is simply nonsensical. Not to mention that you can't or only with great effort actually grab an intact context with subs2srs. All arguments for either subs2srs or full sentence cards stem from misunderstanding anime cards.

You are wrong. To make the entire card you need 20 seconds. 30 seconds at most. If you need any more time than that you are either grabbing a super long sentence or fucking it up. Putting the episode through subs2srs, finding them cards you need and then manually editing them to be reviewable and moving them will take you much longer. Not to mention that seconds of card creation simply isn't a strong argument as that is never a problem.
