Okina quickly dodged Cirno's ice ball and Sunny's laser, which was fired the page before, collided with it. That caused the ice ball to explode, hitting everyone except for Okina, who evaded the attack somehow (probably with a door). This entire fight was hilarious. Okina never layed a finger on the fairies. In the end the fairies just defeated themselves. Basically Okina just wanted to make fools out of them for shits and giggles.

The goal was to trap Okina into an inescapable position using both the combined laser and Cirno's ice block in a two-pronged attack. The whole sequence was pretty brilliant on the fairies' part and it wold have worked if not for the fact that Okina is a admin hacker that could teleport at will. There's probably only a handful of Gensokyo residents that could have escaped unharmed from their combination attack if not defeated outright.

They were able to save Piece in the end so at least that's something.

The thing is that the Three Fairies have improved significantly since they faced Yukari way back when, probably due to facing Cirno more often and the fairycon maiden as well. If the most powerful fairies were the only ones not crystallized, they now outclass Lily whom Sunny used to fear. It was also their coordination that got the fairies as far as they did this last fight.
Given more time and experience, all the main fairies will become extremely dangerous and only their general free-spirited natures will hold them in check. If the Three Fairies were each individually on the scale of Cirno and Piece, they could legit start an incident themselves. For the current Gensokyo order's sake they better hope that the fairies had forgotten about their world domination plans.

It's a completely unresolved plotline, especially the whole "Eternity beginning to control lifeforce" thing.

My theory is that Hirasaka is already planned to be involved with another fairy-related storyline after this (either more fairy manga or another GFW) considering his history, this series is ending so he and ZUN can draft up the outline, which also has the opportunity to take a different direction than VFIS (after Eternity and Okina's introduction with the surrounding theories, as well as Clownpiece's mysterious purpose, people started taking a very uncharacteristically plot-focused interest in the fairies for VFIS and the scope of the manga was becoming increasingly skewed in the latter half). That chapter is a teaser for said project, which will involve Eternity and Clownpiece (who was still left on the surface by Hecatia who has some kind of plot of her own that is ALSO left unresolved) teaming up.

Arguably the entire ending was a teaser: The fairies actually worked together to an extent which made an impression on a sage. Reimu said she'd maybe leave fairy-related incidents to fairies (technically HSiFS was also a fairy-related incident resolved by a fairy). Both Eternity and Clownpiece have continuing plots. Eternity has now personally been to the backdoor realm (and why was it specifically on her back where the door conveniently appeared?) and met Okina, and Okina has fiddled with the fairies' backdoors some more with unforeseen results. Clownpiece's new mission actually coincides with Eternity's vested interest in Okina as well. A team up between them seems more likely than ever because of this.

The latter half of the story is simply accelerating into a direction way outside the scope of the VFIS manga, which is why I think it was formally ended.

People fixated on her hard in the demo because of how shady she was, Zun has been poking the hive about her nonstop since (gratified the demo theories with the Okina tokoyo god line, HSIFS gratified it further by focusing on Cirno's HSIFS perspective and Eternity doing yet more shady shit in-manga). The more people get egged on by her in further appearances the more they expect something to come out of it, and for good reason, as that's the very basis of "buildup".

This is different from just usual red herrings that are just permanently sidelined like Rumia, Eternity is an active topic that's been acknowledged on more than one occasion and actively plot relevant (got Cirno the doyou to beat Okina, stopped the fairycaust). Furthermore Eternity as a character is interesting because she's mysterious, what on earth is her character otherwise when even Hirasaka writes her as shady? Just some random super weird fairy that is actually completely run-of-the-mill and became a stage boss who fucked with Okina, and didn't get cherrycausted (when even Lily did) for no meaningful reason whatsoever? Fairies are pranksters but that doesn't mean they're operate on sorandumb cartoon logic, at this point there has to be something there and it's just a question on if ZUN's willing to tell what is.

Not to mention she's one of the only characters with an existing tie to Okina, who seems involved with fairies quite often in general. As a result people will naturally suspect Eternity to be relevant to something involving Okina and fairies (which so far she has been both times).

You're overlooking the major commonality in the large majority being exceptionally capable fairies, the only ambiguity being the no-names who Hirasaka made the artistic choice of giving Daiyousei's gold-rimmed wings (none of which were present on any of the "freed" fairies) thus implying midboss-grade or higher. If someone were to draw a conclusion in good faith (ergo not "the manga is arbitrary with no observable logic or patterns and the author's choices meaningless") the most likely conclusion is that stronger fairies lasted longer by either having a larger life force reserve then the others or through some other property of being a strong fairy.

As for why Lily got cherried, it could be either that she was particularly vulnerable due to her dependence on spring or she went particularly wild in HSIFS and got a bigger backlash a result, or she's just even weaker than Daiyousei (both of whom are midboss compared to even the three light fairies let alone the mainline stage boss fairies).

I started reading the fairies manga yesterday. Currently at VFiS and this is really where it gets good, especially the stories about the "cherry blossoming old man" and the Tanabata Festival, where the manga reminds you in an innocent and poetic way that fairies are actual forces of nature and not some lolicon bait.

I think the manga got too much away from the nature of Touhou fairies near the end of VFiS to be honest, that nature being to play pranks on humans and be punished. But then the MCs are all abnormal fairies. I hope, if/when it restarts, the characters spend more time interacting with other, more normal fairies, since at this point they barely show any of the weak, unintelligent, prank playing characteristics themselves.

I also hope they're integrated enough to show up in the Suika manga that's coming. Maybe have her toss them around.

I actually find it refreshing once in a while. The fairies are mischievious, innocent children but when the situation calls it they could take up arms to become formidable force. Abnormal fairies like Cirno, Clownpiece and Eternity are interesting too and kind of reminds you that you're in Gensokyo.
But I agree they should return to focus on typical fairy antics if they plan to make another fairy manga and that the next end-plot isn't as much lore-heavy as this one.

But she's learned lots since her first appearance in EoSD? Cirno is capable of organizing large groups of fairies, running a successful food stand after she initially didn't serve anything but flavorless shaved ice (which is something not even Reimu knows how to do, and shows she has problem-solving skills), and knows of outside world locations, implied through reading literature. She seems weird to the other fairies because she doesn't act really fairy-like, at least compared to them.
