checking again it is quite likely that part of the pun of the more kanji-part of the title (there's almost always some pun) is that the first two kanji are "suichouka"... do you see it? This refers to a specific flower called spider flower. 酔蝶

That's because 醒める and 覚める are alternate ways of writing the same word. 醒める probably has a specific "sobering up" or "waking up after blacking out" nuance because of the alcohol radical.

RE: Lotus-Eaters, a separate fellow mentioned that could be a reference to The Odyssey. It could not be but we don't know of Asian Lotus Eater references, and it is worth noting that Spider Flower is not native to Asia so, y'know, why not more Greek stuff (spider flower is from south america)?

Anyway the Lotus-Eaters summarized
>In the Odyssey Book IX, Odysseus tells how adverse north winds blew him and his men off course as they were rounding Cape Malea, the southernmost tip of the Peloponnesus, headed westwards for Ithaca:
> I was driven thence by foul winds for a space of 9 days upon the sea, but on the tenth day we reached the land of the Lotus-eaters, who live on a food that comes from a kind of flower. Here we landed to take in fresh water, and our crews got their mid-day meal on the shore near the ships. When they had eaten and drunk I sent two of my company to see what manner of men the people of the place might be, and they had a third man under them. They started at once, and went about among the Lotus-eaters, who did them no hurt, but gave them to eat of the lotus, which was so delicious that those who ate of it left off caring about home, and did not even want to go back and say what had happened to them, but were for staying and munching lotus with the Lotus-eaters without thinking further of their return; nevertheless, though they wept bitterly I forced them back to the ships and made them fast under the benches. Then I told the rest to go on board at once, lest any of them should taste of the lotus and leave off wanting to get home, so they took their places and smote the grey sea with their oars.
tl;dr, Odysseus's men were taken in by these peaceful Lotus-Eaters who ate, what else? Lotus food. This shit was absolutely delicious, and they didn't want to leave. Eventually, Odysseus had to force them to get back on the ship by fucking tying them to the boat.

Personally I think, given the fact that Lotus-Eaters is in katakana and what the Lotus-Eaters are doing is sobering up, it's probably a reference to the Odyssey. So, this could refer to Suika herself, or Suika's people: the oni who have grown comfortable in their isolation. The same oni Suika wanted to bring back to the surface in IaMP.

Or it could be a cool-sounding title, but ZUN tends to make his titles very meaningful. Usually!

You people are way too optimistic. I would love the manga to be about Suika and the other oni but we just finished Kasen's manga and ZUN doesn't like retreading old ground. This manga is obviously just gonna be a SoL about Reimu and Marisa having drinking parties while random characters come visit and talk to them. The "Lotus" part of the title is integral. That word is uniquely associated with Reimu and Marisa. The first time ZUN used it was in "Touhou Gensoukyou ~ Lotus Land Story". Even when she knocked Marisa over in that chapter you're referring to, after she gets kicked down by Reimu it's Marisa who helps her back up. Because it wasn't really true "aggression", just roughhousing (which she is absolutely known for, and Marisa has a lot of complaints about her body-tossing """""""danmaku""""""" in GoM)

I would agree that she's chaotic. Though her first act in seen Touhou canon was a farce of chaos (I just want to extend spring because it was cut short lol (but actually I want to make Gensokyo seem fun so the other oni come back too)) she has a lot of moments of absolute carefree whimsy, often self-interested in nature.

Right, but I think the title implication is that it does happen, which is why it's a cycle; the hypothetical Lotus Eater will have to stop at some point.

Anyway, was or is, Kasen definitely has connection to Suika, and anyone who play dumb by asking "what does the hermit has to do with the oni" need to reevaluate their life.

Do NOT start with Bougetsushou, that is "Silent Sinner in Blue" and the general consensus toward it is justifiably negative. It was ZUN's first attempt at a serious manga and it wasn't great a lot of the time.

You can start with any one other that that. If you start with Sangetsusei, though, start with the second series (Strange and Bright Nature Deity). The first series' art is dubious and it's a manga cut short due to the artist's failing health. SaBND is where Hirasaka, the artist known for fairies, starts.

>> No.22145762

It's required reading anyway if you want to know more about the series, might as well get that over quickly. Especially since it's more or less tied to CiLR.

It's really not required reading. I skipped it myself when getting into Touhou and read it once I was a fan, and there were things I loved about it (Patchouli all the time, bits of Youmu, Remilia's audacity) but I didn't care for most of it, and I don't think it really added anything in the end. CiLR helped, but even that is like, half incredibly boring. Youmu's great, Reisen 2 is great, the gotcha bitch moment at the end is great, but required...? Ehhh... I'd say "it's an incident that happened" and that's about it. There are lore details for Eirin and her gang, but then there are the moonbitch sisters who aren't relevant outside of Bougetsusou, and as for the other characters they ultimately don't do anything all that noteworthy. If you said "Remilia had Patchouli build a rocket to the moon, and Reimu was the engine. They all tried to take over the moon and a Mary Sue stopped them", that's satisfactory.

If anything I'd encourage reading the original run of CoLA. That actually has oodles of details while also being entertaining, and I get this feeling that most people haven't given it a chance.

All these girls who are normally violent assholes in the games are falling over themselves (literally in Youmu's case) to hang around his shop and spend time with him. Jesus, no

First of all Rinnosuke is the farthest thing from a Gary Stu. He's a poseur who thinks he knows more than he does, and he gets seriously embarrassed on the occasions when he's caught or fooled himself. He's a jerkass too, and practically a hermit.

The only two girls who hang out with him, and it really isn't that often given everywhere else we see that they hang out at the shrine, are Marisa and Reimu. Marisa is a childhood/family friend, and Reimu has also known him since she was a child. They both treat him like they treat a brother: exploitative and teasing and checking up on him every once in a while. While Kasen and Sumireko talk to him regularly as well, it's by happenstance. They use his shop as a meeting place. He gets a few other customers, but it really is a few.

The art in the first 2 manga is also by far the worst out of any of them. WAHH started super sketchy looking but it got way better as it went on. The first fairy manga and SSiB never improve and I am very sure the low quality art is a big reason why SSiB is so bad. The last 3rd of the manga is nothing but fighting but it just looks terrible and there is no writing there to make up for anything. Tho to be fair the first fairy manga is so short that it would have been impossible for the art to improve over time.

"A plot" isn't inherently good or bad, and for what it's worth SSiB's plot is a somewhat convoluted game of one-upmanship wherein several powerful, mysterious types attempt to manipulate simpler characters into doing their bidding, which ultimately consists of not much. The real payoff for the series isn't in SSiB either, but CiLR, and honestly it's not really worth slogging through everything else just to see Yukari say "pranked" to Eirin

>>22154317
I think in order it's...
-FS, the conclusion of Remilia's Chupacabra arc
-One of the fairy manga, specifically the one where a tanuki tries to drink and eat with Reimu on a moon-viewing night. The fairies switched Reimu's dango out with poison mushrooms, but Cirno had also switched those out with ice balls. After eating what she thought were dango, she tripped the fuck out, and was pissed off about it during said trip
-WaHH (hobgobbos)/FS (tupai)
-FS, the inari hood chapters
-I forget which this was but I think it might've been an early chapter of VFiS or a late chapter of OSP. It definitely happened
-WaHH, the chapter where Kasen was raising a shitty pet that was misbehaving badly. It was some lightning creature. Looking into it, apparently she found the guy when a certain tree was struck by lightning? The new home of the fairies that Yukari basically gave to them. That's a neat detail.
-Early WaHH chapter, specifically attacking Myouren temple not exactly just for fun. She said she was mad that they hadn't properly greeted her. She is Ibuki-douji after all. Whippersnapper youkai. Also she didn't "get" drunk, of course; she's always drunk.
-Another early WaHH chapter. The fox was pretending to be Marisa and got free food/drink. It repaid Reimu by basically cursing her, but pretended it wasn't bad by showering her in small gifts. Reimu's an idiot, basically
-WaHH
-Fairy manga. One of the chapters that shows just how little Patchouli cares for Marisa, because she is fucking PISSED that after she gets crushed, of course Marisa went on a stealing bonanza.
-The, I think, OSP chapter where Kasen shows up. I know Kasen was the cameo at the very least.
-SSiB, duh
-Not quite, but she is indeed hired to destroy vines around the fairies' house and she can't. They are too powerful. Culprit was a tsuchinoko, I think
-One of the more hilarious things to have happened in Touhou. This was when Suika had brought Reimu a sake bug-made jar of sake. Eirin steals it from the fairies, who had stolen it from Reimu. Poor Suika is super upset when she finds out her gesture of kindness has been nullified/is briefly upset when she thinks the sake bugs' quality has gone down.
-Eastern and Bright

Couldn't tell you the specific chapters for most of them, though.

>-I forget which this was but I think it might've been an early chapter of VFiS or a late chapter of OSP. It definitely happened
It was the very first VFiS chapter. Star put a bunch of bombs in snowmen because she knew Reimu would be too lazy to clean them up one by one and would try to blow them up with danmaku.

Having backgrounds would explain why the fish made a bridge for Reimu? Backgrounds would explain the snow-clearing rock? Backgrounds would make the egg chapter less weird and inconclusive? Backgrounds would make the moon flag make any sense? I think the problem with those is ZUN and not the artist.

Anon, are you serious?

You can hardly tell what's happening, visually. If anything, the real reason people UNDERSTAND what happened in that sequence is the text of the situation, AKA, ZUN

What, that one whole speech bubble is what made >>22155342 clear?
No wonder so many /jp/sies dislike the fairy comic though, it's apparently too high brainpower for them.

It made what happened VISUALLY clear, not the reasoning behind it. Until you can argue that the fish-bridge is clearly depicted as such, stop missing the point and arguing about something else.

Did you not read the manga you're defending?

These speech bubbles did. There's a barebones bg which disappears following this page

What part of the background is clear to you there?

And no one said they were never drawn. Jesus, you're obnoxious. The actual artist gives less of a shit about all this.

You know, I think this is the first time I've seen someone trying so hard to defend Matsukura's fairy manga. I thought people just generally agree it could use a redrawing.

It's more that some guy is using a mention of any aspect of the manga to bring up how bad the art is. The art is shit but you can give it a rest.

With enough time and people you'll get a fanatic fan of anything.
I myself think the art in question is pretty charming in a way, but this dude is absolutely nuts.

>Reimu kills herself because she was too lazy to make food

>Youmu gets inflicted by lunacy and attempts to murder everyone at a party, and no one even notices

You can't mention the former without bringing up how Komachi was this close to having Tenshi's head over it.
