Okay. Someone PLEASE explain this shit to me. I understand the basic premise of Touhou; difficult bullet hell games with flying cute girls instead of fighter jets or what have you. What I don't get is the INSANE fandom behind it. The waifu claiming, the arguing over said waifus, the music, the doujins, etc... How do danmaku games even have enough story to hold up this much fandom? Please enlighten me.

No. As you can see, people still post here.

I play the games but usually ignore them after the first week or so after novelty wears off

I argue over powerlevel and waifu, but I have been coming to /jp/ alot less lately

I don't really fap to the doujins, I think I've fapped to like 2 of them total, both from the same group. I usually just read the nonH ones for story

You'll find that ppl love touhou for different reasons

It has a bright cast of cute girls most of whom are just distinct enough to be interesting, while at the same time just vague enough to allow generous room for personal interpretation and creativity.

I honestly don't know. If the fandom didn't already exist, what with it's music and doujinshi and fan-created content, I probably wouldn't have got into it quite this much in the first place.

I have no clue how it started in the first place, but now that it has gained momentum, it'll assimilate us all.

I say, try them all. Even the PC-98 ones if you're feeling adventurous of course plenty like to ignore they exist, which is a shame. I would say start pre-UFO first because my impression from playing it is that it would probably the hardest for a new player (unless perhaps you have experience with other shmups)

I suggest starting with Perfect Cherry Blossom. I'd wager that's what most of the people here started with.

Don't bother playing the games

Start with the doujins and music

If you ever get curious enough to see what listening to someone's theme music while fighting them is like, then you can try playing the games

Otherwise the games are nothing special

Well I found a torrent that has the PC-98 games and Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Phantasmagoria of Flower View, Imperishable Night, Shoot the Bullet and some other stuff. I set Embodiment of scarlet devil to go first cause I read it was the first windows based game.

Start with PCB or IN. Use the translation patches.

Then go read some of the backstory on the Touhou Wiki (Perfect Memento, etc).

Then go read some of the official manga (Inaba of the Moon/Earth, SaBND, etc). And then go raead all of the other manga on Gaku Gaku Animal Land.

I love it because it's all in one package. The games, like it or not, ARE good. For the most part they have superb music and addicting gameplay, which is something I miss from today's generation of games.

On the other hand, the story might not be it's strong point, but the setting and characters are. I gotta hand it to ZUN, he created characters that a lot of people identified with, and the setting of Gensokyo is also very well done for a fictional universe, let alone for a game.

Combine that with the enormous fandom and huge doujin scene and you got an awesome franchise to follow.

For those looking to start playing the games, I'd say play the Windows era ones but do them on order. EoSD, PCB, IN, MoF and SA. EoSD will teach you better habits since it doesn't have a visible hitbox and all, it will force you to learn where you character is without actually looking at it, which will help you a lot in later games. And it gets easier later on until you hit SA, so it should be a nice ride.

At first I played it because it didn't take up a lot of room on on my hard drive and I thought that if it wasn't good, I could quickly delete it... now my touhou folder is the biggest in my computer...

You talk like there are many other shooters around that I rather spend my time with. In reality, the genre is almost abandoned nowadays.

Before playing Touhou I did played other great shooters like the Treasure ones, R-Type, Gradius, and even some old ones back in Genesis like Thunder Force and so. But I've grown tired of them. The spell system of Touhou is unique and addictive, as well as its grazing system and game specific stuff (PCB border, etc). Plus its setting and music is on par if not better then most other shooters I've played.
