Those UFO items get me to fly head-on into the thickest bullet mist just to get my stars.

But summoning a UFO during a boss fight is useless. It immediately flies off-screen and you lose your life/bomb or any items it collected.

Also, Sanae is the best character in the game.
Reimu A and Marisa B (except at close range) are weak.
Sanae has good damage output and optional spread-shot, homing.

second boss last spellcard is/can be hard, and the double nigger spellcard in the OP is rather easy once you've figured out to be about 2 character length above the bottom and move to the bottom after the brofists appear, because their pinky doesn't hit you.

The UFO system is annoying. Previously you only had to memorize a stage perfectly when you were going for score; now, survival and score both come from the same source, just different colours, so you have to memorize the exact right time to get any kind of UFO so that you can fill them up and whatever they drop will be collectable.

The stages and most of the spellcards seem to be just about entirely twitch-dodging. Whatever happened to streaming and learning spellcards?

The new power system is utterly retarded. You lose an entire power level every time you die, with no way of recovering it (surely LOSING A LIFE is a penalty enough?), and thanks to small power items (and the apparant lack of large ones? I don't think I saw any) now only filling 0.01, unless you died right at the start of the stage you'll probably never get it back by the boss. Losing multiple lives to a boss almost garuntees getting a Game Over, and the continue system is even worse than SA and MoF, as you now start over with MINIMUM power. Frankly, all of this seems uncessesary and only serves as an attempt to drive away newbies, as now any mistakes at all make you even more likely to make further mistakes. Doesn't ZUN realize that the secondary fans are secondary *because* they don't care about the games?

I'll get it when it comes out, sure, but I can't help but feel that this is going to be another game like SA where I only ever am able to see the good ending on Youtube.

No sir I am not. But it is not fine.

Consider that you can bomb retroactively in touhou anyway, reducing the appeal of a shield/auto-bomb, and other characters can drop bombs and sit on bullet emitters to add hundreds to their graze counter. Aiming to keep the shield up is also worthless because you’re losing point counter every time you get power instead.

Oh hey, I guess you just failed reading comprehension 101.

Twitch dodging is boring, especially is that's all there is to do. Approaching a card or wave as a puzzle and gradually working out a better way to get through it is infinitely more enjoyable than twitching through wave after wave of random or semi-random bullets.

No, you see, that's not what I said.

Twitch dodging IS boring. Every single wave is approached and dealt with in exactly the same manner. I can do it, but it is not fun or enjoyable; there's no flexibility to practice and master a pattern, as the whole thing is just looking for random holes in the bullets and running through. I also fail to see why mediocre-to-average players need gradually to be forced out of a series they enjoy because of arbitrary difficulty hikes. Let me put your question back to you; can't YOU just play on Hard mode if you're so good? Normal Mode has always been a compromise between the intoductory difficulty for newbies and the mastery difficulty for experienced players. As of SA, and it seems this game as well, that compromise no longer exists, and I can see no good reason for the lack when Hard and Lunatic modes both are still present for those who want a more in-depth challenge.

And I think this game might be the easiest to 1cc if ZUN doesn't change things, seeing as people can get 7 lives by stage 2. Collect red UFOs, ignore anything else. When a big UFO appears, kill enough enemies to fill it's bar up and kill it. You get 2 star items, every 3 star items give a live.
Alternatively collect green ones, get 1,33 bombs per UFO, which is also a lot.

The best part in my opinion is that if you want to go for score, the game get's way harder since you have to collect blue UFOs to get more points out of the blue items and miss out on extends and bombs. If you just want to 1cc, your score will suck but who cares.

Yeah, you can get more lives than previously (though even this now requires perfect stage memorization, which survival runs never before required).

However, think about how that ties in to the power system, especially for new or less adept players. Losing a life is now crippling on your power and damage for a significant period of time, making you even more likely to lose more lives in that time, crippling you even further, making you even more likely, etc. Although there are more lives available, unless something changes, this system is even more requiring of a perfect run through most than previous games where lives were fewer but deaths were recoverable. As it is, even a single death will mess you up, and multiple deaths before recovering the power loss from the first is devastating to a run.

>> No.2205974

>>2205943
True, but you can get a huge stock of lives in the easy stages. Consider IN, you started with 2 extends, got 2 from items and 5 through Point items. Typically you wouldn't hit 7 lives before Stage 5, unless you were really reckless with collecting point items AND didn't die.

>> No.2205978

>>2205811
I've just done my first play-through (on Normal) and I have no idea what you're talking about. There is plenty of streaming and learnable patterns, what's really different about UFO (and parts of SA, in fact), is that you have to do both at the same time.

The formula for most of the spell patterns and stages are one bullet source that puts out a nice pattern, and another bullet source that aims bullets at you - forcing you do stream one pattern and at the same time forcing you to move through the previous one.

This is good design. There are so many parts in the older touhou games where all you need to do is nudge your character a few pixels to clear it.

Yeah, it seems like ZUN has been playing a lot of arcade titles. But the game seems all the better for it. All the challenge of SA with all the gimmicky shit removed. And ZUN knows the crowd of people who dislike the new approach would only play the game once on easy and fap to the doujins anyway.

The only two problems I do have so far are:
- Sanae has a wonky hitbox.
- There should be a "dud" UFO enemy if you do the chain wrong, as messing up a chain means you start fighting the UFO at stupid points (or it gets despawned by a boss).

It could have done that perfectly well by simply going back to the old bomb system. For people trying to survive, losing a life is enough of a penalty, and for people trying to score bombs need to be saved for the highest-yield bomb spots. Like this, missing even a single deathbomb is a major screwup of the run, and even if you do manage it you only have two bombs per life, further encouraging the nessecity of a perfect run. Indeed, to replenish your depleted bomb stock requires a death, which significantly reduced your power in exactly the same vein as bombing did in SA and MoF.

I'm sorry, but that's bullshit. I enjoy playing the Touhou games, but I'd be the first to admit that even after significant amounts of practice I'm still only a mediocre to average player. There is no reason why the game's normal mode needs to be so challenging; people who need more challenge can play the harder difficulties, while still allowing the less adept players to enjoy playing the game. All this does is drive away people who previously enjoyed the games but are being pushed away due to the continued hiking up of the difficulty. Normal mode is no longer a compromise between a complete newbie and someone with significant STG experience, and there's no reason why it shouldn't be.

Maybe to prevent people from collecting way too many of the same color and/or control the flow a bit.

What?! All you need to remember is what colour UFO to pick up, and that if you mess up the colour, to make sure the next randomly coloured one is neither the target colour or what you've picked up already. And each stage has, what, 4-5 sets of UFO's?

That is not exactly the kind of hardcore stage memorization you would normal associate with a score run. Not even close, in fact.

UFO generation is completely fixed.
Certain enemies drop UFOs, no variability. They will always start at the same color. Non-blinking ones will also never change color.
Defeating a UFO will create a blinking one of the same color. Which means that 3 non-blinking blue UFOs can still bring you a step closer to a red UFO. I don't know what color you get from the blinking large UFOs. That might be random.

No, it doesn't screw you "irreversibly", but it does make a card that you die on, as well as everything after it, significantly harder. Particularily for the less strong player - which I get the dictinct impression you are not one of - this is likely to lead to more deaths, further weakening you and leading to more deaths. Sure, you get more lives, but losing many of them at a single point is much more likely than it was before. The only way to avoid that spiral is to either be good enough to never die again before you recollect all the lost power - which takes significantly longer than ever before - or to attempt to play a perfect run.

Failing to memorize the stage around the UFO and the exact right point to collect will result in either being unable to fill it or being unable to shoot it down/ collect the power ups due to a boss appearing or because of dense danmaku.
