You sometimes have to keep in contact to make sure they don't forget about you, especially if you're on a waiting list of some sort. You've got to remember, the more popular the artist, the more commission requests they get thrown their way as well as and questions and inquiries from other commissioners and potential commissioners.

You also need to be very careful about who you pick to do your commissions. Pick someone who has a long track record of doing commissions and whose art is a constant product. In other words, don't go for someone's who art varies wildly in quality and style. It's also important to make sure that they are truly open. If their "open for commissions" post is a year old, and/or they haven't been online in a few months, chances are they're aren't open. Hell, they may not even be alive.

All in all, you can't be a cuck. You have to grow a pair and speak up. This is especially important when they are working on your commission, and they send you updates. Make sure you're getting what you want. But at the same time, don't be too rude. Maintain that balance between politeness and firmness. There is a sort of finesse to commissioneering.

If you're a well-known namefag and/or have connections, you get your shit done for free.
And again, I'm going to emphasize; pick an artist that has a long track record of doing commissions and whose art doesn't vary wildly.
