Now Japanese works different than English, so you can say shit like してるところ which means if someone looked at you, they'd see you doing X. That's the "scene" you're in. That means if you say shit like 猫を売ってるところ多い. It means there's a lot of places that sell cats, or lots of "scenes" that sell cats, not that something sells a lot of cats. This is a common mistake.

You've clearly never studied a European language, they're very diverse. They all come from PIE so of course they're easier for English speakers.

Also if you've done any actual research, you would not trust the FSI numbers. FSI has a strict drilling patterns for 5 hours plus outside study which they don't even factor in despite it being mandatory. By their own admission, at the end students are maybe B2 at most and are limited to mostly diplomatic fields.

Some parts are more complex than Japanese, like having genders, different cases for nouns and adjectives and for each word's gender, 5+ past tenses plus 2 moods, stress changing a word's meaning, conjugation for person, etc. Japanese grammar is pretty simple in comparison.

japanese grammar is simpler, but japanese works on a mechanism that most people here don't understand and probably never will

it works on memorization. in other words japanese works by knowing what to say in a given situation, and not by dictionary definitions. most western languages you can just look shit up in the dictionary and replace a word with another as long as the meaning is generally correct. you can't actually do that with japanese, you have to experience the situations and know what's appropriate to say

it's the reason why when you talk to people who are full japanese with japanese parents and they grew up in say the US, their japanese is still fucked because they're saying shit that makes no senseeeeeeee

Japan prefers fixed-width to proportional. Each character, even a space, should occupy an equal amount of area. It's why things like 」 have a big, blank area to one side of the glyph.

The Latin alphabet isn't balanced well for fixed-width so you end up with big gaps between certain letters while others get bunched together and it generally just ends up looking messy, so we use proportional fonts most of the time instead in which each character has its own unique size in an effort to reduce the amount of gaps as much as possible. Small spaces look more natural in this setting.

If it's common to use the kanji as well as the hiragana then I add it with kanji. I know some people always use the kanji even if the word normally is in hiragana (like 何処) just so they know it if it comes up. An example is 可愛い I would add as kanji since it's common but it's easy to understand with just hiragana too.

Or just make a mental note like きれい looks like 綺麗 in kanji and keep reading.

I just copy and paste subtitles. It takes like 30 seconds at most to get the sentence, define a word or two, and get the furigana. Some people screenshot the scene with or without the subtitles, paste it into Anki and define what they're looking for. Both processes are decently quick.

Something like subs2srs makes it quicker since you can make 20+ cards in a few minutes by deleting the useless ones and transfering the useful ones to a sentence mining deck and just add definitions or translations or whatever afterwards.

Don't add stuff from books manually. Use an OCR or something. The Jewgle Translate app does that. Better yet, don't even do it. Use digital media you can copy like soft subs, subtitle files, text, etc.

-Learn the kana
-Do RTK
-Start sentence mining, adding sentences with 1 unknown word to an SRS. Have a goal of around 10,000 sentences
-Watch and read Japanese media 2-4+ hours every day and listen when doing other stuff
-When you're intermediate, start transitioning to Japanese dictionaries

That's it. It's very simple. Khatz changed a lot of stuff throughout the years as well like lazy kanji instead of traditional RTK, MCDs instead of sentences, etc. but people ignore MCDs mostly

Matt's version is similar but still different. His version is basically:

-Learn kana
-Do 1000 lazy kanji RTK cards in Anki
-Read a grammar guide or do the Tango N5 deck
-Start sentence mining, optionally use a pre-made deck
-At 2500 words, start using a Japanese dictionary

People misconstrue AJATT as "lol eat everything with chopsticks XDDD" but Khatz was just quirky and never seriously advocated that nor sleeping on the floor. Khatz, in the later stages of AJATT after he quit his job at Sony, started some sketchy stuff like heavily promoting Silver Spoon (retards didn't read it before buying, it literally says you cannot get a refund until 18 months have past), AJATT Plus, etc. but those have never been essential. Even now, Khatz still has the "Best of AJATT" and Table Of Contents sections which are all free and easily available. He even went to the trouble of making his own SRS despite only knowing basic coding knowledge (His SRS is bad but still he put a lot of effort into AJATT). Khatz even cited his sources regularly like Krashen, Beniko Mason, and Antimoon; citing direct publications and articles not just "Krashen said it".

Are you using Yomichan or Rikaikun or something similar? A lot of those tell you the form and what grammar points mean as if they're words. If you hovwe over 見られる, for example, Rikaichamp says "見る passive or potential form", it's a good way to learn what does what, if something is confusing like what does the volitional form mean or what's a na adjective, you can just google it and skim through it quickly.

Infamous Nuke "only study core2k why can't I read yet" Marine made a Memrise course for Tae Kim and a youtube playlist reading it.

Or just spend a few minutes watching Japanese Ammo videos on youtube, her videos cover a lot of what Tae Kim has and have a lot of examples and explanations

It's not only input but it;s heavily input based. Most people here don't want to speak Japanese but just consume media which is why an input based approach is ideal. Speaking won't help you understand a book. You can be very conversational yet still not be able to read a book easily or watch a show without subtitles. You easily learn about Japanese culture through Japanese itself via the media you watch. You can also read about Japanese customs like funerals and stuff while going through the language learning process. For example, just from anime I now know (which has been confirmed for me) that in Japanese school, students often clean, bow to the teacher, prepare their lunch beforehand, and kill each other with bladed weapons as seen in the live action remake of Battle Royale when the tsundere character nevada-tan killed her classmate after being insulted. Jokes aside, you can learn a lot from watching diverse media, like how people introduce themselves and how people interact.

Terrace House is excellent since it has the cast that comments on the interactions between the people and they point out things that a Japanese person would pick up on like intonation, body language, etc that conveys a message that you can't study, you just have to know.
