good way to have fun learning when you’ve been slacking. give yourself mini challenges. “read 5 pages” “do 20 reps” “shadow 5 sentences of native audio”. crossing things off as you complete each lil challenge will give you some good squirts of dopamine, which will help build momentum

Learning words from 2000-3000 is easier than learning 0-1000 despite being the same amount. It's always hard at first. Keep the number maintainible, not huge.The point of the starting deck is to introduce the process and some words, it's easier as you get used to it and can start reading subtitles and japanese dictionaries.

Tae Kim is just an intro, not a complete guide. He is right that a single verb is grammatically correct, many gaijin use 私は at the beginning of every sentence because they think it's needed. You can just say something like 食べる and it's correct, you don't need to complicate it with 私は食べ物を食べる like many beginners think

You completely missed the point, and that excuse is retarded. You could convey the same idea to people by simply telling them they can leave things out which are obvious from context (which is what competently made guides by people who actually know what they're talking about do).

It's worth remembering that Tae Kim's guide initially had a lot of outright errors in it which had to be corrected for him (not that it doesn't still have errors in it... even in the pronunciation section). He is not good at Japanese, or at least wasn't when he wrote his guide. I don't know why you would use it when better things are available.

i’ve been doing 25 minutes a day most days for almost two months. i started with mind illuminated but switched to something called TWIM 10 days ago. a few days after switching something weird started happening. i’m concentrating on the meditation object for a couple minutes, when i get shivers my spine and shoulders and it makes it hard to stay still. like an energy rush or something. it feels really good then it goes away and i feel normal again. then it comes back for a few seconds, then goes away. on and off while i’m doing the meditation. has that happened to you before and what you do when it happens? i don’t know if i should focus on the rushing feeling or the original meditation object.

yes, not only does remembering new kanji get easier in and of itself but the more of them you know the easier it is to infer readings and meanings of new words you see. i distinctly remember having the exact same thoughts as you a year ago when i started. it's normal to struggle to remember these retarded symbols at first when you've never done anything remotely like it before.

one thing i will say is, from personal experience, your nihongo journey is gonna be a lot harder than for the average person if you're highly self-critical/doubtful by nature.

Not like i've been to japan but this doesn't seem as bad as you make it seem. There are probably definitely people who had all foreigners but as long as you're white I think most people will accept you as long as you're actually fluent in the language and don't sound like a guy who didn't even attempt to sound native, not that you have to sound like an actual native. i haven't read axanael but according to wareya's site, leyline and nanatsuiro are the easiest VNs to read.

sort by 90, 92.5, and 95% freqlist target by clicking on the column headers and they're consistently the VNs that require the least amount of words (derived from wareya's frequency list) to read. at least if i'm reading it correctly. axanael seems to require more than double the vocabulary to know 95% of its words. obviously difficulty is more than just the number of words you don't know but it's probably a decent proxy for difficulty. but if axanael looks fun to you then try it anyway.

i really have no clue about electronic dictionaries and what ones are good except that sharp is a big name. but japanese people do use them it's not some fringe thing so they are useful. i would give some dictionaries in qolibrbi a test run before you buy a model. i think 明鏡　広辞苑 and 大辞林 are popular on electronic dictionaries so look into those and pick one accordingly

I mean, the comparison is like saying english kids learn a lot of english from comic books. Only problem is the only people who buy comics in North America now a days are 200 lb nerds in their late 30s. Comparatively, I was reading Animal Farm, Of Mice and Men, The Lord of the Flies, and The Great Gatsby for an english curriculum, which are all very rudimentary stories that any old pleb as read by now. Though I guess that's not particularly fair since those are more stories that are typically read for students around grade 8 to around grade 12. I think a better start would be very simple folk tales, then.

If it's a new card, and you know the answer then suspend. Other wise, show the answer and learn it before marking it correct and moving on to the next card. After that it's a review card meaning you mark it wrong if you don't know the answer.

There are variants to this, such as keeping it pure spaced repetition where you never mark cards wrong. Listening cards are good for this where you know it if you read it but not when you hear it.

Hello! So I've seen some fantastic answers within this community to similar questions, so I thought I would give it a shot here!

I've been learning Japanese for around three years now and consider myself to be lower/middle intermediate (I am comfortable with ~500 kanji and 1000+ vocab words); however, I have little to no speaking experience. Which... Honestly kinda sucks since that's half of the language. I spend about 30 minutes to a couple of hours everyday studying vocabulary and grammar points, so I am dedicated to the language.

Are there any other intermediate/advance learners that recommend the Pimsleur course? If so your comments and guidance are greatly appreciated!

Nobody *ever* writes this this way. If you got it from anime mining then your subs were made by a JSL. Reminds me of when some Chinese-made subs I had wow mazui "bad situation" as 拙い (which is exclusively for skill etc).

it's settled once and for all. he's not saying you'll do permanent damage by reading too much or too early. it'll just be harder to have a good accent.

person taking the class does little to nothing outside of the class besides maybe revising what they've already learned in the class
after 1 year they have a grand total of 52 hours of study, assuming there were no breaks in the course and they didn't miss a single class
