What feeling is that? There are lots of doujin barrage STG with human characters and also games like the Castle Shikigami series, which I like because it has a mechanic where your shots get stronger while you're grazing bullets. I'm currently playing ccwi and still haven't 1cc'ed it either. I had put in about the same amount of time as you also. 80 hours. Before taking a 2month break. After coming back at some point I started playing for score. It's the first shmup I've played for score. It just feels good to use break in this game. Anyway I'm now 231 hours into the game. Still haven't 1cc'ed. But I'm getting closer. I've no missed every stage in practice now, while scoring with the exception of the stage 6 boss and tlb. I still need to work on those two fights some more.

I've put in way more time than I should have needed I'm sure. So much that I recently (only a few days ago actually) started examining my method. Trying to figure out why I'm not more consistent and why I'm struggling so much in general. I figured I needed to start looking at things differently or something. Otherwise I'm never going to get much better at these games. So I went back to the basics. Re-read The Full Extent of the Jam. Realized that I wasn't really actively trying to read the bullets. I just mainly tried to dodge them. Also that looking for the way through the bullets, at the gaps seem to help me dodge better (maybe I literally do have to look at things differently). That my cross-over was sloppy and could be improved. I also started examining my replays (I had to use obs in this case. Why is there no replay save in practice mode in ccwi?). Looking for more cues to help be consistent. And basically just being critical of my gameplay in general.

Anyway CCWI is hard. And I'm ashamed to say reading your post made me feel good that someone else was struggling with it too. What parts keep fucking you up in stage 3 and 4?

>> No.21858845

>>21857902
>What parts keep fucking you up in stage 3 and 4?
The snake/serpent ships in stage 3 always make me use a break or bomb twice (once transitioning into the segment, and once to safely get out).

Stage 4 has those spinning blade enemies after the miniboss that can easily destroy you from behind if you're playing as Type I or II. There is a video by Iconoclast showing him dodging the enemy wave, but I can't pull off the technique quickly enough. The red gunships at the end are hard to kill if you don't have a break or you aren't doing enough damage, which is why I'm using Type III, so far it's working out better.

On a side note, stage 5 also has lasers turrets which I can't take out fast enough unless I use Type III, these aren't as much of an issue as the gunships since they only fire in one direction, but walling my dodging space is very annoying.

The actual snakes or the ufo ships with the blue bullets before and after that section make you bomb both times?

>There is a video by Iconoclast showing him dodging the enemy wave
that's the strat I use but I did other things in the past.

>stage 5 also has lasers turrets which I can't take out fast enough unless I use Type III
Do you mean the stage 3 boss-like ships in the last section? That section is hard to get down and it's so far away from the beginning of the stage. I play type-I and I think I always tried to break on the first one, bomb the second, and break on the third. You need to use break or bomb to destroy them. Also if you already aren't get right on top of them while immune and lay into them. I think that section made me wish I could save-state the most in the game.

My intro to STGs was Defender. It's a great game with an even greater sequel. I know it may seem contradictory, but maybe what you need to recapture that feeling is a subgenre that is less similar to Touhou than the average character-driven vertical shooter. Games with relatively free movement like Defender and TwinBee are worth a try for this reason. I am a bit surprised there is no Touhou-themed Defender clone.

in all seriousness, here's a brief guide

Each character has main and sub weapons, you should check out the manual for each character because it gets rather complicated.

to go through the UI:
red circle: the hearts are your extra lives, the NECESSARY refers to how many small heart drops you need to get another. The number needed becomes higher with each Extend, but it resets back to normal when you reach a score/kill counter "breakthrough".

purple: sol refers to your main shot power/ bomb stock. Past Sol 3 you can bomb, with more sol the bomb is stronger. If you have "bootleg ghost" set this serves also as an "autobomb". See the bootleg ghost section in the system11 guide below
luna is the fire rate, if you spam main shot it tends to decrease - so you're better using both main and sub weapons to balance it out. If you stop using main shots or pick the blue items it goes back up

green: the subweapon gauge fills when you don't use your main shot (or hold it down charging, like DEADLIAR and MINOGAME can do). The blue rectangles show how much it has charged, to level 1 or 2. But again, it depends on the character how you actually use sub weapons, or if they have active use at all - DEADLIAR for example only uses the subweapon button to command his companion "mistletoe".

orange: rank. You're more likely to get your ass kicked but get better score. Decrease it with green drops, increase with purple.

blue: terra is a rather unique mechanic, it depletes as you clear stages, when you die it depletes a lot, and it also depletes if you let heart pieces drop to the bottom. When it's empty you are forced to go to the bonus stage prematurily. (if you play well you automatically go after SEGMENT 7 instead)

the right UI elements are all about scoring.

Here's a much more indepth guide

Sorry for the late reply, just now returned to the PC.
Well they gotta be Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Mountain of Faith and (what nobody ever will agree with me on) Ten Desires. Most of the Touhou games have some good things to them but only those games for me feel really "complete" visual-, gameplay- and soundtrackwise. Currently I'm enjoying WBaWC too but I doubt it will stay long.
>>21875695
In this post I also forgot to mention Tenta-Shooter in the omake section. It's actually a really good shmup and doesn't even have so much hentai.
And in the other decent ones section you can probably add Eschatos too. Even tho Eschatos pseudo 3D, weird camera changes and different altitude levels really add nothing good to the gameplay, it's still a decent STG and fun to play.

To be frank, to have a complete STG experience all you need is Crimzon Clover WI and Deathsmiles. With those two you have everything that the shmup world has to offer you.

Crimzon Clover is the apex of vertical scrolling shmups, Deathsmiles is the apex of horizontal scrolling shmups.
Crimzon Clover is space ship, Deathsmiles is magical girls. And that's all there really is in STGs.
In Crimzon Clover you battle tanks, planes and weird robots, in Deathsmiles you battle magical monsters and demons.
Crimzon Clover is the dominating active male essence (it's the king of shmups), Deathsmiles is the complimenting passive female essence (it's the queen of shmups). Together they are complete. Crimzon Clover is Yang, Deathsmiles is Yin.
Both have amazing music and amazing gameplay.
Every other game is just the same but worse in one way or another. Every other game is merely a bonus addition to a complete STG package which is CCWI and Deathsmiles.

You can smell his foul cumbreath from miles away. Pulling out unimportant petty shit out of his ass just so he has something to nitpick on. Just look at this:
>Does Crimzon Clover have power ups?
Power ups is a shit system that doesn't belong into a good STG, especially not that kind where you lose powerups or your shooting power upon death. You asking this already shows how much of a cunt you are. But both CCWI and Deathsmiles have bars that you can fill up to enter into a hyper power mode for some time.
>Does Deathsmiles have complex stages you have to dodge the objects in as much or moreso than the bullets?
Yes, you have to dodge not only bullets and the enemies themselves but also objects that come at you and obstacles.
>Or are they both just danmaku trash?
I think you are talking about Touhou here, aren't you?
>Do they even have multiple paths through the game, providing replay value?
Both games have PLENTY of replay value. Not only tons of modes and different chars/ships to pick and to master, Deathsmiles has also mupltiple endings for every char and CCWI has you grinding out stars to unlock the last ship.

With this you are defeated and banished. Your pathetic ways are exposed! RETURN TO THE SMELLY CAVE YOU CAME CRAWLING OUT FROM YOU VILE BEAST!

I 've spent more time trying clear the stage 3 boss on normal, than I have actually clearing Ex bosses in most Touhou games.
This shit is bleak, but on the other hand, I haven't felt rage and adrenaline like this in so long I almost thought I didn't have it in me any more.

Any eXceed niggers up in here? 3rd's ost is just about my favourite shmup soundtrack, excellent game too. 2nd is a decent Ikaruga clone without Ika's stage rigidity - chains don't exist, so play how you want. Gun Bullet Children just feels dull but is an ok extra.

That rarely happens, only vampire illusion and scarlet gensokyo can throw you hard walls, and they are dodgeable anyways. If the game walls me and I could have macro'd around it then its my fault.

Yeah I still listen to that soundtrack sometimes, even the 2nd one as well.
Having cleared 2nd I can definitely say its a far easier game than Ikaruga though.
The games themselves though are lackluster despite the good voice acting and music in my personal opinion; they just are lacking something.

I tried Seihou yesterday. The first game simply doesn't work on my WIn10 laptop for some reason. I went for the third game directly and got a bit shocked by how many unfair surprise attacks the game pulls off against you, unless the sentences of the characters are supposed to help you, but I can't read them anyway since they're gibberish.

I wish CAVE would stop fucking around and port their games on more platforms. I just want to pay for Mushihimesama Futari Black Label even if they'll never make a good shmup again on a system I own instead of emulating it.

CAVE aren't capable of doing it themselves. Degica said there was more to come but they haven't said anything in like a year so I assume whatever agreement they had is over. M2 have said they want to port to PC but were having an issue with timings and wouldn't release until they fixed it but again that was over a year ago so I assume it's never going to happen. MAME will likely be the most convenient option for the foreseeable future. Maybe stuff like the MiSTer will get to a point where it's doing accurate FPGA replication of the CAVE boards but it's a long way off.
