Is there anyone here besides me that just doesn't like Miku? To be honest, her voice isn't all that great. I can't find one really redeeming quality about her. If someone wants to change my mind, then you're more than welcome to. I kind of feel like I'm missing out on something, because everyone else seems to adore her.

I think she sounds pretty cool if used right. I can't stand when someone makes her sing, for example "God Knows" since it's pretty obvious it will sound inferior to the original. But the Vocaloid originals are enjoyable to me.

I think Miku appeals a lot to me because she is more "artificial" (and therefor more purely part of the 2D world) than even most 2D girls.

Although her voice may be based on a seiyuu, her words are her own. The people who originally created her didn't fully understand the popularity that she would achieve as a character, and therefor she wasn't really "Miku" yet when she was first released. Her personality and most depictions of her are forged not by one group of people, but by everyone together. For some reason, to me, this makes her really appealing to me. It's the same appeal of something made by Anonymous, or of characters like the OStans.

Part of my 2D fetish is about the girls not really existing. Since I've been very young I've found I feel empathy for things that are not conscious or alive, often even stronger than I feel empathy for living things. I dislike wasting things like food and paper not because I care about the environment or starving kids in Africa, but because I care about the food and the paper themselves. I feel sorry for food that gets thrown out, it was created for the purpose of, and waited its whole existence just to be eaten, and yet people will throw it out without a second thought. Etc. etc.

I can't really explain how this has anything to do with liking 2D characters or Miku in particular, but it does.

The first time I remember really getting into Miku was when the song "Packaged" came out on Nicodou shortly after Miku was released. I think I cried when I first heard it. It was the first really good serious song I remember hearing from her, before that it was just Mikku Miku ni shite yanyo---!! etc.

I like songs like Packaged and Hajime no Oto where Miku is singing as herself more than songs like Melt, which despite being a good song, is just a love song and could be sung by any girl.

Another thing about Miku: you interact with her directly. There is no "main character" barrier.

I never rename the main character in eroge, because he is not me. The main character in novel-type eroge will inevitably take actions that I would not if I were in his position, thus renaming him to my own name has always just seemed silly to me.

But with Miku, I myself am the one interacting with her. There's no "game world" either. If I do well, then the song that Miku and I have created will become popular, and Miku will be happy. It's all reality, but not reality at the same time.
