a few, sometimes i see the usage of a word being pretty obvious in context and i want to remember it but it's not too obvious even reading the dictionary entry either in english or japanese so it's easier to just get it into context, also you can make multiple cards for single words to learn better an uncommon meaning or something

tl;dr: 5 people are learning japanese, 1-2 people max are learning any other language. most people believe that the most useful language for a venezuelan (other than english) would be the language of the country they plan to go to, people say that they learned english without studying, people argue about japanese learning methods and post some things in japanese

More TaeKim confusion

Where has the "と" gone from 落とす, I understand the verb above is transitive but TaeKim only shows 落とす as the transitive version and not 落す and doesn't explain what the difference between the two is?

What does えらんなく mean here, looked it up on jisho but it tells me is a conjugation of 選ぶ, shouldn't it be written with the kanji then?. The fan translation says "I never changed it so poor kids will gladly move in" but that doesn't give me any clues about what I'm misunderstanding.

MariaDB is too far over my head but I like the idea of saving backups to csv.

Was doing a research internship (grad school), just got a lucky opportunity really. Then proceeded to solo travel around kansai region and shikoku for ~3 weeks.
Never worked a real job there before, but I was able to see what the work culture was like for natives and gaijin both in public and private sectors. Trust me, if you're from a developed country (western europe, AU, non-ghetto america) you DON'T want to go work there long-term.

The compelling part of compelling input is important as fuck people. You have to really want to read that shit. If you don't, drop it and move to something else quickly. It's much better to keep reading but skip around a lot, than to procrastinate reading something you don't look forward to and then end up not reading at all.

sometimes when i get a book from aozora bunko it has a hard time with words it would know from other sources but otherwise it is pretty good, and the back-lighting makes it easy to read at night and the e-ink makes it easy to read in direct sunlight without back-lighting. i've had mine for about a year now and higly reccomend an e-reader to anyone who likes reading, especially in japanese.

A mix of both. Currently grinding through core 6k, started earlier this year, so I'm probably 1/4-1/3 through. Also working on a separate deck for words I encounter during class as well as during part-time work. As for the rest, I just look them up with my dictionary.
Also 1 volume of manga at my current level (mid way through between N5-N4) takes me roughly 1 and a half to 2 hours depending on how much words I need to look up or check grammar guides. There's still some inflections that I still can't quite grasp, so that's always a challenge. Then again, Granblue isn't really a highly complex manga to begin with, as long as it's very shounen, it shouldn't be too difficult. I tried going to melonbooks once to browse on eromanga, and some magazines are kind enough to have plenty of furigana, so it didn't take that long to understand it.

That's how I started at first too, anon. Just keep at it, grind both vocabs and grammar at the same time. Do self exercises constructing words that you've learned so far with the new grammar you've learned in tandem. You'll definitely improve in time.

Kindles are fine, and what's better, you can pick up an old paperwhite for pretty cheap now.

Bear in mind you absolutely need a 300PPI display for manga. And you will occasionally encounter author scribbles that need a zoom-in, but half the time you can't even read that shit in the dogshit raws most series have anyway. You could buy a bigger E-reader to avoid this, but you're looking at 4-8 times the price.

Tablets are garbage for reading on, if you need one for other reasons maybe it's a consideration. Personally, I bought my kindle primarily for LNs, which it's fantastic for, although the touch screen dictionary lookup is a bit slow and janky. Manga that hasn't been raped by a levelling tool looks very nice on it too.

So you should be able to encounter hundreds of new words every day without care in the world if you will remember them next time you'll see those words. And in relatively(6-12 months) short amount of time you'll find yourself having nice little passive vocabulary under your belt.

alright i paid attention to the time it took me to read 1000 characters. it was about 30 minutes but i noticed i spent literally half that time alt tabbing. so if i were completely enthralled i could probably do 4k characters an hour (maybe even 5k+ or 6k+ but i don't want to lie to myself) and i could hit like 10k characters per 3 hours which would lead to faster gains and hopefully within another 6 months i could get that to 10k characters per hour. the problem is that fuck this language.

I even tried the first 10 questions on n2 and got 8 of them right. Although I hears the listening is very hard, I think I have what it takes to pass the rest of N2 if I really buckle down and study for the next 3 months.

Sometimes I really enjoy writing out kanji.

Especially the red stroke in pic related. I find it very pleasing how it kinda 'crosses' over to the other quadrant, and how it is only 'used' again three strokes later.

I just love 戈, man. The best radical there is.

To me I prefer 戈 more because all the strokes of 走 doesn't really 'intrude' on other parts of the kanji. The last stroke of 走, the seventh in both 超 and 越, are independent of 刀 or 戉. Meanwhile, in 哉, or 我, or 栽, you can see the 'fusion' of strokes. And I really like that.

What's your least favourite radical? Mine would be 左右, if only because the way you write the intercrossing lines on the upper left isn't consistent.

I keep thinking I've got it down, but then when I put it to practice, it ends up sounding like shit about 75% of the time.

i'd summarise it something like this: the japanese l/r is actually quite similar to a d - you start the tip of your tongue against the gums behind your upper-front teeth, and then flick it downwards quickly
if you do it a few hundred times (you'll look like an idiot but just persevere) you'll eventually find a small range of movements which make a sort of r-flavoured d; just make sure you can produce the sound both from rest (start of word etc.) and in flow (e.g. from an n like in benri 便利)

i tried repeated reading and noticed something that was holding back my reading speed tremendously. and that was, continously checking my subvocalizations to make sure i was reading kanji right, or reading them at all. when i started going faster i stopped being able to clearly hear pronunciation of the kanji in words. it was like i just looked at them, got the meaning and kept going. is that really okay? fast readers (faster than 350cpm), while reading do you hear any confirmation in your head that you're reading those kanji with the correct sounds? or do you just trust that somewhere in your subconscious is reading them right

yomichan frequency lists only store the spelling of a word so they're always going to have egregious errors because of homographs - things like 着く just merge two different words together or pick a single one of them.
