why the fuck are you putting up a new thread if you don't want people to post in it? are you a bit fucked in the head or something?

why can't you just wait for the old thread to 404 instead rushing to put up another one(for what purpose???) when the other will still be alive for probably a good 12 hours yet.

good job on splitting the userbase between two threads and slowing both of them down

You'll learn the kanji better through reading. It's like Anki, it's just to get an intro to a word, not to learn it. People spend hours on Anki trying to master everything, same with RTK. well brute forcing isn't how i learned most of my kanji. i played with identifying radicals and those helped a lot in setting apart similar looking kanji and categorizing them in my mind in general. learned lots of words through immersion and got used to the shapes of their kanji with repetition and conscious observation, of their kanji, since knowing the radicals made them each a block of multiple known parts rather than one big 20-stroke monster.
a general meaning of most kanji became clear after learning one or two words with it.
now i see no reason for RTK at all. from my experience, all the proposed benefits of it can be obtained with other, less time consuming means like learning radicals and priming your brain to notice them when looking at each kanji.
writing can also be helpful, but it definitely doesn't require writing every single one, especially from a keyword (& an english one on top of that). just writing enough kanji to get you well-acquainted with the radicals and how they're placed is enough. then your brain will start noticing naturally which radicals are in what kanji.
does that make sense to you?

>>21752931
there is plenty of narration in vns with actual literary words unlike manga where its all dialogue and sound effects 99% of the time. the images in vns are mostly generic character sprites and reused backgrounds that basically serve to show who is talking and where they are at. you have to rely on the text to tell whats going on unlike in a manga where the picture drawn specifically for that scene and every scene is spelling everything out for you (which isn't bad but it's not reading).

if he used a more accurate term or coined a new one which he could impart with the connotations which *we all know he actually means* you'd probably just greentext that

the fact remains as self-evident (by sheer construction of what words mean) that if you become familiar with kanji first THEN learn vocab, you acquire the vocab more quickly, and thus reach longer-term goals quicker than had you undergone the naive "dive head first" approach

>> No.21753890

if the goal is to develop recognition abilities instead of writing chinese characters while looking at english words then why not just look at the characters while you read? 3 months of reading goes a long way compared to doing rtk for 3 months or wherever you want to put the timeframe at.

there are people like quizmaster who learn a large amount of words without doing rtk in a short period of time
and then there are people like rarepotato who do rtk and then acquire a large amount of words in a short period of time

does doing rtk really have an effect on learning words efficiently or does time spent actually engaging with the language determine how quickly that vocab acquisition happens?

It would be better to learn from easy anime and manga, for the sake of doing the activities of both acquiring vocabulary and developing a reading/listening comprehension ability in Japanese, than it would be to just go through a set of cards on their own.
Looking at anki cards makes you good at doing the connection between a word and its pronunciation/translation, not with actually getting a feel for how Japanese is used.

Yeah its basically worse version of RTK that is easily shoved down throats of reddit men since it basically "updated the RTK model", "provides words with kanji" and "you will know not memorize about 3k vocab+ if you did kklc", yet no person ever completed it. It costs over 100 dollars used, it would be a shame to pirate it, that wouldn't be fair so better buy it on amazon. Nonetheless, it introduces kanji in a order that makes RTK's way of how kanji are introduced feel like a divine angel coming from the sky while engulfing you in divine light. KKLC using three english words associated with the kanji and another japanese word you must memorize. Maybe you should also memorize the other words otherwise you would only memorize 3000 words that you can just read afterwards.

Ultimately doing RTK is fine if you spend like 1 month on it and then just throw it aside because that time frame isn't really that important in the long journey that is learning Japanese but the problem is that most people say they'll do it quickly, but then they find it boring as hell and procrastinate it, don't actually work through it and end up spending over half a year on it without having learned any Japanese and I bet that's the majority of people who try to do RTK before knowing any Japanese lol it's so mind bogglingly boring and disconnected from Japanese you might as well just watch Anime and learn by ear

>> No.21754910

Btw doing RTK in a month means creating stories for around 70 characters a day. Good luck!

>> No.21754923

even 25 kanji per day was hell for me. i've heard others talk about how RTK only took them 1 hour of study per day but it took me like 2 (or 3 when i procrastinated).

if i were forced at gunpoint to do RTK again i guess i'd set a 5 second timer on the cards to make my reviews short, but then reviews would pile up more, and it still takes a couple of minutes to visualize a story for each character (some less some more) so that's still a minimum of 50 minutes a day.

Matt didn’t tell people to stop doing RTK. He advocates doing LazyKanji first, then, once you get a basic grasp on reading and reach a more advanced level, do RTK properly.

I do think there’s a lot of value to this, because RTK is a total breeze once you’ve already been reading and have a vague outline of kanji shapes in your head.

If you could passively absorb knowledge of how to write kanji just by being exposed to Japanese, then Japanese people wouldn’t spend years learning how to write in school.

The breeze that RTK becomes once you’re already at or near basic competency is totally different than approaching it as a beginner with no knowledge of the language at all.

Either approach had pros and cons, I would say.

The pros of doing RTK first is that it will make it easier to learn vocabulary by reducing the amount of extra information that needs to be learned in the process of learning new words.

Doing RTK later is like the other way around. The amount of new information you need to learn in the process of doing RTK is much smaller. You can already recognize and connect most of these kanji to tons of words you already know. You won’t get characters with similar keywords confused because you know words that use each of them. Your shitty mnemonic stories won’t lead you to write radicals out-of-order because you already have the vague outline in your head of what the kanji looks like.

Doing RTK at the beginning is probably better, but most people won’t have the patience to grind kanji for 3 months at a beginner level. But I think it has benefits at any level, because reading alone is not enough to learn how to write kanji, memorizing kanji by rote repetition is for losers, and not knowing how to write a language you want to be fluent in is a pretty big handicap

If you don’t want to be able to write Japanese, or interact with Japanese, or have completely given up on the idea of ever using Japanese for anything besides consuming eroge, that’s your choice, but it doesn’t apply to everyone.

And believe it or not, knowing how to write kanji, being able to recall and see every little stroke and detail of those characters, makes Japanese easier to read. It makes it a breeze to differentiate all of the literally hundreds of lookalike characters that exist. It’s a skill that every Japanese person has and I have no doubt that it contributes to their native-level comprehension of the language

According to uchikoshi in the Ever 17 anniversary interview by peeps over at lemnisca translations - the sandwiches were originally supposed to be tatsuta sandwitches, meaning the legendary chicken sandwiches were actually a localization change or mistranslation! And everyone agrees people frantically refusing to quiz are just cowards who don’t know shit. Hell even matt got on to quiz. Everyone who knows Japanese performs well on the quiz. I’m a beginner to learning Japanese, so far I’ve completed RTK1, mined Tae Kim for sentences and vocab and just finished Genki I but I honestly don’t know if I can face the tedium of doing Genki II. Should I just start attempting to read native material and mining for vocab?

>> No.21757369

You're ready to start reading native material. Even if you did Genki II, Assimil, Teach Yourself and Colloquial you will still struggle to read at first. Get a base (which you have) then start.

A reason why Core6kfags suck is because they learn non-relevant words from newspapers yet read vns which have different vocabulary

I’m a beginner and I just discovered anime with Japanese subtitles. Seemed like a great idea till I tried it. Watching an episode requires me to keep my mouse in hand, ready to pause and use rikaikun at any moment. And it takes me about twice the amount of time or more to get through an episode. Is that still fun to you guys?

>Assimil
I never imagined I would ever see this trash popping up in these threads. I could write a dissertation on why Assimil is counter-productive, erroneous cancer and a surefire way to confuse and discourage any person with an interest in learning Japanese.
That printed diarrhea was originally translated into frog-fucking French and then RETRANSLATED into English/German/etc. based on the frog-fucking French script, while KEEPING their country specific quacking grammar explanations.
On top of that their attempt at romaji is several layers of fucked. For example 日本料理 would be 'nihon jooli', I shit you not.

This trash killed my desire to learn Japanese for years. STAY. THE. FUCK. AWAY. FROM. ASSIMIL. This should be written in big red letters as a warning on the guide's front page.
