there is a disturbing lack of stories that have a character giving in to the immortal and becoming immortal in the process. i only really noticed this recently with the last episode of zoku natsume yuujinchou.

A /jp/ anon once said he wanted a story about Marisa becoming a youkai magician without knowing it, gradually through exposure to magic. Then one day she sees Reimu's aging face and realizes "Oh shit, I'm a youkai". Someone needs to do that shit. Obviously it needs some fleshing out, but it could be pretty good.

following up on this idea, i would really like a show like natsume yuujinchou except the main character is/has recently become immortal. a slow show like it could really be interesting with the main character slowly loosing track of time with larger and larger breaks between episodes until it is eventually a break of 60+ years or something.

Marisa is a witch and we know that she'd become a magician youkai like Alice and Patchouli. But there is no spiritual youkai as far as I know, I think Reimu would enlighten and ascend to heaven before she became a Youkai. If she dies of old age she just gets another turn on the karmic wheel.

I suppose you could argue that Marisa uses magic in the traditional sense where Reimu (and most youkai) uses spiritual power. Magicians are set aside from normal youkai in that sense and given their own species because they use magic, not spiritual power.

To that end you could say that Reimu's powers shouldn't corrupt her where perhaps magic could for Marisa. That said, it's another popular idea that Reimu herself could become a youkai through Yukari and the necessity for there to be a shrine maiden if Reimu doesn't have someone to take over for her when she gets old.

Everyone has their immortality ticket. Sakuya could become a vampire, Marisa could become a magician and Reimu could be altered by Yukari. Other humans in the series has some special quality or other that makes them not entirely traditionally human. Mokou is immortal, Sanae is the descendant of a god, Youmu is already half ghost, Keine is only half human, half werecow. Akyu reincarnates.

what i was talking about was the eternal youth flavor of immortality where you die when you are killed. just that you tend to be a little harder to kill than most.

>> No.2167339

>>2167307
two things wrong with that.
First off, many "immortals" in gensokyo just have infinite longevity, they can still be physically killed.
The only ones for which this isn't the case is Kaguya and Mokou. Which leads to the second thing wrong with that: You will never be the last thing left alive, as these two are also immortal forever, so there'd always be at least two left.

You are only realising this now in a fairy tale setting where STEALING A ENTIRE SEASON is possible?

>>2167314

I mentioned the others in the sense more for the sense they already had a claim that doesn't make them entirely human, not that they are necessarily immortal. Youmu however does get to live longer for some reason because of her ghost form which is enough to keep her around for as long as the game is going to go on for. Even then, she's Yuyuko's servant. If there is no one to replace Youmu it wouldn't surprise me if there were attempts to keep Youmu around as a complete ghost, but I'm not sure how that works with the comments made in PoFV.

Point is, normal humans don't really happen in Touhou and everyone has options or something special. Unless you happen to be Maribel and Renko, then you are only kind of special, even that has odd theories around it.

The only ones who are ageless but not immortal are the lunarians. All youkai have lifespans, celestials cheat death so they don't count I guess, and Yamada and Komachi are out of the question. Correct me if I'm wrong.

>> No.2167389

>>2167349

Death in Touhou is generally as permanent as any other as I understand it. It's just we know a lot more about how they are processed afterwards. The only people who are actually killed are the ones who are completely immune to it. Assuming you actually die in Touhou it then becomes a matter of what happens next through the systems of judgement with only a few notable figures getting work around for this, oddly Youmu seems to be one of those examples. Mokou and Kaguya are completely immune to the afterlife for better or worse, Akyu simply reincarnates into her child or something, not sure exactly how it works but basically it's still working. Everyone else mostly doesn't age but can be killed... except maybe the gods, but even they fade away without faith.

Touhou gets around death through the spellcard system. That's it really. If a Touhou dies, they usually die for real ;_;

Has this actually been confirmed in Touhou? I keep hearing how they are meant to be long lived and I remember that has been noted, but I generally thought they just lived longer then humans and Eirin especially long through longevity drugs she makes herself.

Granted, it's not like I've read every bit of Touhou fiction so I don't know for sure, but I wanted to know if this is canon fact or something that people theorised in doujin works.

>> No.2167409

Dunno exactly what Touhou makes of vampires, but if they are based on traditional ideas they should be ageless abominations against life. Still, they die if they are killed (gb2shirou).

Cage in Lunatic Runagate says that the moon is free of impurities, which are what causes aging on Earth. So living things on the moon do not age.

It's not that they're lunarians that make them immortal, it's just that they're on the moon.

It has been mentioned on CiLR chapter 3:

"Lord Tsukuyomi took only those relatives he had the utmost trust in and moved to the moon. The moon was completely without impurity. As a result, those who had moved to the moon forsook any lifespan. That they had no lifespan meant they were neither alive nor dead. In that sense, the moon may be a Pure Land without impurity, that is to say, the same as the world after death."

However now that I read it more carefully... the last part does mention they are not completely pure.

"Of course, since the lunar citizens and the moon rabbits aren't immortal, they can die in, for example, accidents or battles. Still, even the citizens of the lunar capital bear just the faintest trace of impurity. Even we may be fated to live out our lives and die some day."
