Anyone have a complete set of the Ranma subs from Netflix?

The らんま1／2 デジタルリマスター版.rar file in the "Netflix (unsorted)" mega folder linked on itazuraneko only contains subs for about the first 1/3 of the show, with the rest being missing for some reason.

Yeah I actually understood all this and did really well on the things I read... But unfortunately I took too long and had to just fill in random bubbles for the last ten or twelve questions. Even if I pass I'll still take it again in December because I feel a little guilty about maybe passing based on those random answers.


That's the bane of listening tests. I remember the TOEFL I took back in '15 where I would have literally aced the test had it not been for the last two listening question where I completely lost focus because of how mind-numbingly easy they were.


Reading wasn't to difficult ... Except I wasn't ready for there not being enough time!!


Took N2 here, got three wrong on the pick the right sentence for this vocab part. Some words like 廃止, I kind of understand the meaning but don’t know how to use it in a sentence. Didn’t know 記憶力 was to be used with おとろえる, and also that question for 別れ際 which I randomly chose 別れ間.

Reading was the only part I felt pretty confident about. The passage was not too boring and quite understandable.

I spaced out a little bit in the listening part and think I got the question where there’s a guy buying some expensive car (or something like that) wrong. There’re few questions here I’m not sure about as well.

Before doing the test I think it would be nice to score 140 or over, but now I think passing grade is fine. I should review more on vocabulary and kanji next time.

Reread the The Mind Illuminated book myself and I feel like the books way of approaching meditation is way easier than anyone tried to explain it. The first stage is just being consistent in doing the sitting while the second stage is just the intention being on the breath and when you somehow get in deep thought you remember you where meditating. Theres nothing with calming the mind, intense focus, distractions such as thinking, switching between thoughts and the breath yet, that all comes later. Just having the breath in awareness for 15 to 45 minutes is the actual first step.

I've read the transcript and to be honest, this is exactly why people don't actually do it and why I was turned off of by this thing. This overcomplicates the entire thing unless you already have 5k hours of practice. Trying to feel sensations of a hundred body parts while feeling the sounds, thinking about the thinkerer in the brain is maybe a great thing but it sounds like a great way to not meditate.

I get the need for better understanding when watching shows and following plot and whatever. Two things to consider: Difficulty level can be extremely different from show to show, in general slice of life is easier, chuuni shit can be stupidly incomprehensible at times.

No I did not. It was just a summer vacation stay of two months and organized by the town where this took place (small town in 栃木県). It was more of a cultural exchange program, where a couple of foreign students were brought in during the summer with some Japanese classes and cultural activities, such as 弓道 and 書道 classes.

i think you're both right, in different ways

watching with japanese subs requires frequent pausing, rewinding, and yomichan-ing which ruins the flow
watching with english subs is the only option that allows you to hear the japanese you know, and perhaps some you didn't yet know, while still guaranteeing you'll be able to follow and enjoy the plot
will watching with english subs, even if you actively try to listen for the japanese, actually improve your listening skill very much on it's own? i'm not convinced yet
so i'm thinking of putting all the anime i watch with english subs on a list somewhere, noting my favorite episodes as i go

yeah i know enough that the connections happen a lot, 90% of the time or more
i also find myself noticing a couple times every episode "ok that translation isn't even what they said" which makes it obvious i'm understanding the japanese to even be able to contrast it with the eng sub like that
before this i'd watched several hours of raw anime and anime with japanese subs, plus drama CD's and the odd youtube video/実況プレイ here and there
my listening isn't horrible it's just not good enough to guarantee i'll catch everything 99~100% if i watch anime raw, especially if it's anywhere outside the moe/slice of life safe zone
i feel like eng subs gives me the best of both worlds, like i do hear the japanese and make connections with what words/sentences mean what (even with new words sometimes)

I have been reading about learning via reading and whatnot, but I'm not sure how that works in practice. Surely I'd need to look up practically every word in the sentence to understand it, and I don't see how that would cause me to learn the kanji unless I did it 50+ times so that the definition just comes to mind when I see it. Flash cards just seem like a quicker and easier version of doing that, to me.

thats likely the case
because without specific instruction like "tune your ears to the language being spoken, notice any wrong translations" etc, people will by default will exclusively just read the subs and ignore the spoken language
also, it depends what level the participants were at in the L2
if they were straight up beginners, like less than 50 hours of comprehensible listening experience
then it's way more likely they'd gain nothing from it (unless they were repeating parts over and over to try and piece things together. but one run through at normal speed definitely would not be enough for gains)
i really think that for it to be effective,
it would require knowing *enough*, having a listening skill thats good *enough*
that you can already comprehend at least around 70% of it (not just words but meaningful phrases and sentences) without any subtitles at all
if you're not at that level, the chances of you listening to most of the L2 (at full speed, without rewinding) while L1 subs are present, are very slim
it'll just take too much mental RAM and you'll give up and pour all your attention into the subs rather than balancing both

at full speed with no subs, it's likely i wouldn't have quickly put it together that 明日に響く meant "i'll feel this tomorrow (or literally 'the effects of this will resonate into tomorrow)", because most of my knowledge of that word up until now has been in context of sounds, music, yelling etc
but my knowledge of the literal meaning of 響く combined with the situation and the english sub, gave me instant confirmation of this new usage/meaning
and without me having to pull out a dictionary or pause the show

I think meditation is really starting to become helpful although its only been a week. I no longer get absorbed in mindless debates inside my head, it just doesn't happen anymore. At first I had to snap out of it everytime, now I just don't get them. (I used to get absorbed in debates for hours with people in my head). I can focus more on Japanese, while attention is still really bad as when I'm watching something I still am distracted 90% of the time by thoughts but the snapping back is getting quicker and quicker, now I only get distracted 100 times instead of just one great distraction where I forgot that I was watching something, I no longer forget that I'm actually watching something or listening to Japanese.

When I reread what I wrote I'm sure that it could have caused a misunderstanding as it sounded as if I have some kind of Schizophrenia. What I meant was that I realized I was spending alot of time in thought and somethimes hours on end without realizing or getting back, these thoughts could be a inner monologue, a conversation with someone I knew or just daydreaming. A bus ride might be completely overtaken by thought If I'm not speaking to anyone without realizing it for example, this also came into my daily life more and more, when thoughts are pleasant its fine but what about tormenting thoughts where you keep thinking if you closed the gas handle to your stove or if you said something wrong. Those long periods aren't as frequently occuring anymore, this goes for going through Japanese media too. I hope this decreases even more, then I will start working on forgetting and just small bits of thinking that happen every second.
