Been doing RTK for about 16 weeks (actually just over - I changed decks and have no date statistics for the beginning). I'm 1340 cards in, which makes it just over 10 new kanji per day.

Once I finish RTK1 I'll redouble my efforts on Core vocab and grammar, and once I get Core 2k mature maybe I'll finally feel confident enough to start reading or outputting some trivial stuff.

Don't dismiss things you don't understand.

1. Learning to produce on an idea prompt gets you recognition for free, and 0% is only true if you never intend to actually go to Japan and interact with Japanese people in-person
2. A structured approach to learning kanji by component deconstruction makes you vastly superior at distinguishing similar characters, especially in small fonts or hand-written.
3. The real benefit is that it boot-straps the vocabulary acquisition process - "learn kanji then learn words made of kanji" is overall faster than "learn words made of kanji you have to learn disparately every time"

>>21651056
In my original post >>21650968 I made it clear how long I'd been doing RTK. The statistics for before that ~ 16 week period represent other decks which for various reasons I hadn't been studying diligently. The statistics during the relevant RTK-studying period are indeed consistent.

>>21651082
>i think this argument falls apart when you get so much of a headstart on actually knowing the language by reading or listening more instead of doing RTK.
Only if your "end goal" is the mere consumption of VNs and anime for teenagers. The loftier the ambitions, the greater the overall benefit of taking a more rigorous approach.

>you don't have to do RTK though. the more kanji you know the more easily you'll be able to instantly distinguish and recognize new kanji.

do you have evidence there's a causal link there though? maybe people who are motivated enough to do something like RTK and actually post about it on a japanese learning forum are more likely to be enthusiasts who spend a lot of time with the language. moreover unless you have some sort of test to gauge their proficiency then it doesn't mean anything. quizmaster didn't do RTK and he scored high on the j-cat and on vocab quizzes after less than 2 years of learning. moogy is a translator who read a lot of VNs and watched anime and got N1 after 2 years.

not a very good example because ますます does give extra meaning to what's going on and it's also really common.
all i'm saying is that it is low comprehension. and it's not like you can even tell how well you are comprehending something anyways unless you are being quizzed on the contents by a native speaker or something right so yeah.
there are people who say they are n1 all the time right but they haven't taken the test and they report to have read like one book or something like that.
so i think it's common that people overestimate how much they are actually comprehending like the guy thinking he was understanding so much stuff then seeing there were 200 words he never knew before in it

Words and vocab are like a set of a database with version control enabled. If it was winter and Khatz wore a pair of 手袋 and a native would've said that he should take of the 手袋 while he didn't have a handbag with him his mind would defintely fix the meaning of the word or if he was reading and someone said here take my 手袋 you must have cold hands or something it would've made sense to a normal brain that this probably isn't a handbag. RTK is great because compounds get a fixxed position in the mind while you would just add 2 tags together 手 and 袋 while in RTK terms one means "hand "and the other would mean "bag" you would get "hand bag", this however has nothing do to with the meaning of the word. Surely you could think this would mean hand bag however it could also mean the hand that wears the bag which would mean something like a Glove. RTK is just a crutch that sets the basis of making it easier to remember kanji and compounds because there is no reason to brute force anything if you already have a dataset in place that can be used, if there is no dataset in place for example 魚 is a fish but 凧 is a kite but you didn't know 凧 it would take more time and effort to get it in a fixxed slot or its own dataset before it becomes clear, with exposure surely you will not forget it but making a clear dataset before the exposure happens would provide you with a great basis. If you are a really lazy learner and don't feel that kanji ever stick RTK will provide you with the data you need and so it will be alot easier to make everything stick. I do feel however that RTK doesn't need to be done at once. You can do 500 every 3 months and after a year you would know 2000 Kanji or so but if you have been reading next to do doing RTK and you are also listening, while making animecards at the same time you will constantly get exposed, then when you come accross the kanj in RTK later you will probably have seen it already and it will be easier to make it more vivid in your mind.

I think claiming you can't learn japanese by doing X is just the screeching of NGMI. As long as you're being exposed to the languages in some form you'll make progress.

Now I do think that unless you have a specific education/career-related deadline the best use of your time is to expose through things you like doing because even if you might (not necessarily will, even) progress slower than grind you will have the dual merit of enjoyment both making the time spent worthwhile in other ways and keeping you from just giving up along the way making all the work you put in pointless.

My intention was more towards people that do find readings, words or meanings hard to remember or hard to learn. And to be honest I just wanted to write this out aswell, I know that there are people that actually see your opinion and then don't think for themselves and actually get frustrated in not remembering stuff more easily later and never questioning, same with people still hating on Anime cards despite it being completely logical as to why it makes stuff easier to remember and getting results faster. Nonetheless, Reading improves reading, that's for sure. I never said anything about it improving reading, I just said that RTK just makes it easier to increase your level of reading faster and makes it more effortless learning while also making it less frustrating all at the same time, that it is only a crutch, or like a library that is installed on the harddrive which can be edited and that can be accessed by any program if we would use a programming example. Nonetheless, doing RTK wouldn't only "install" and fill in a 2136 kanji library, it would create additional libraries in the way that it makes objects related to every one of the 2136 kanji and the associations with it which makes the library more consistent and less prone to error but also easier to write to, while at the same time making it easier for new computations possible. In my case I did the cold reading approach for 1.5 year, I defintely got really good at reading however there were holes and I felt like I hit the ceiling. I often asked myself why I wasn't able to remember readings fairly easy of very "complicated" characters out of context but also somethimes inside context as an example: 御伽噺, 慇懃 or kept forgetting the reading while still grasping some of the meaning such as 鰭. You also don't need to see the kanji to be able to read, I'm sure you've seen the examples of this in english many times where the letters aren't in the correct places yet you are able to understand. Despite this, in harder texts this function doesn't exactly break down but its harder to understand and get clear and vivid meaning in context and actually visualize the contents. When I started reading harder books I knew that "cold reading" has its limits for out of context which in my eyes created a fake fluency illusion and I my initial goal was for everything to be really vivid while getting the ability of deducting meaning of a unkown kanji. Surely you can do this by just reading further but I feel that most people with a concentration level of 1 to 3 seconds aren't able to focus very well on what is written why it is written and how it looks and to actually make a "entry" in their brain. When I did RTK which I was actually highly against at at the time since it feels counterintuitive to learning actual Japanese just like many here, I swallowed my pride and somehow after completing it everything just went way smoother while I didn't know yet how or why, now after seeing a new kanji once I just remember it after looking it up which was my inititial goal.

You do listen when you need to.
You don't listen to the audio when you already know the word because you already know it.
How do you now understand the logic behind that?

> perhaps the context of anime cards helps if you're already at a high level of comprehension, but as i am now, the limited context of what i can fit onto a card is not helping my retention of those words
1. You are supposed to understand the context you put in the card if you put sentences on the card that you don't understand you are doing it wrong. The word is the new element that you learn using the context.
2. There is no limit whatsoever how much you can put on a card.

>only point of these cards is to improve my listening
You are using them wrong. You don't train listening in Anki. Is the rotting clump of cells inside your head that can barely even be called a brain really incapable of understanding that you can't learn a language in Anki? That you can't learn listening in Anki? What the fuck is your problem? You are obviously a stupid retarded ass fucked down syndrome suffering bastard of a lazy eyed whore who tried to abort you with excessive drinking, but luckily that's not much of a problem as you can just listen to normal people giving you advice, the problems arise when you try to use that pea brain of your to come up with your own methods which consists of nothing but shooting yourself in the head (not much of a loss). idk if you made your point or not.
the words you put up there except for 1 kanji arent even in rtk1 anyways but are easily deconstructed by anyone who is familiar with kanji from a non rtk background.
also i do actually feel bad when people come here being zealous about rtk because someone like you or mattvsjapan tells them some weird theoretical shit about rtk without any evidence and they just believe it.

--oh lets not forget You and mattvsjapan both did a long period of reading before doing RTK so you are already capable of dealing with kanji.--

and then the poor kids post their anki stats and they are getting so many answers wrong on their reviews because they can't remember how to write 卸 when they see wholesale or whatever it is supposed to be

i can understand the sentence when i read it. i often miss words when i listen to it. that is where sentence audio with anime cards comes in. if i started making anime cards with only sentences i could hear perfectly, then all my anime cards would end up with sentences that have the word by itself or with だ thrown on the end.
>You are obviously a stupid retarded ass

I wanted it to be a easy ride. I tried 100 entries of KKLC with the method that is included in the tutorial of the book but it was really boring and it just didn't go as smooth as I thought it would, what you are saying might be great but not everyone would know how to go about that since they just follow the book and try to memorize everything. Nonetheless, after starting RTK I realized that RTK's structure on how kanji are introduced did help me tremendously. Of course you can use KKLC in any way you want, I just felt that when I started RTK that it was more easy to stay consistent and I didn't find it boring at all, however 1 keyword + (story) just visualized, voiced or both where the meaning of the kanji can be deducted or can be "feeled" was way more easy in my case. Now everyone is different, for you it might be easier to ground those 2300 japanese words together with the keywords and kanji, for me it was just a chore, looking back I do think that KKLC will work great too if you can be consistent, I just couldn't.

I knew lots of words in spoken Japanese due to anime (可愛い, 遅刻, 落とす, 人類, etc.), so what I wanted was not have a bunch of kanji shapes in my head, but rather to be able to 1) know how words that I was familiar with in terms of pronounciation with kanji, and 2) learn new words along with every kanji, mostly because the only thing blocking me from actually reading manga and LNs back then was not knowing kanji.

i'd bet he looks a lot better than you lol
actually i have a theory why so many on here hate matt
its likely not just jealousy of his japanese level but also his appearance
matt looks decent enough that he could probably easily get a japanese gf if he wanted to
whereas most of you are probably fat (or skinny, muscle-less) ugly unattractive creepy NEETs
so taking out your frustrations on matt makes you feel a lil bit better about your 悔しい state of being

The most important thing to realize about meditation is that the spiritual feelings you start perceiving after engaging with it for long enough are fabrications made up by your rationalization faculty to try to explain the abnormal state of mind you're experiencing. In other words, anyone who starts treating medication as a remotely spiritual pursuit after doing it for long enough, has actually regressed to a point where it's worse to meditate than not do so. The ideal meditation is like dreamless sleep: thoughtless, a loss of all senses, nothing but a was of random incomplete thoughts that you perceive as the background noise they are rather than attempting to encode them into anything meaningful.

I think what Anti-Anki tards don't understand is that using a good card format reviewing things you know is no effort whatsoever and all such info will quickly disappear into year long intervals. That's the entire point of SRS. So you spend your daily 20 minutes inevitably mainly on things you have trouble with making it a very good time investment. And you have the rest of the day to read, watch Anime and do whatever you like. What stupid advice, to not use Anki.

you realize it adds up right
thousands of cards and you're looking at hours of extra review time, not seconds. and for what payoff?
40 day suspension means those words are guaranteed to stay in your memory at least a few months
by that time, if it was worth studying at all, you'll have encountered it in your input enough to solidify it (which is the ultimate point of anki anyway, to hold things in your memory till your input can strengthen the word enough for it to last on its own)
and even if you don't encounter it in input again for another year, the sprint with anki will be enough to at least make you familiar enough with it that you know you learned it before
and at that point you'd probably just need one review/lookup to solidify it
no need to be an anki slave
use it skillfully

it adds up but realistically you're spending mabye 5-10 mins per day repping those old cards with a big deck (15-20k). imo it's the best possible use of 10 mins you will possibly get since it's literally targeted memorisation of shit you should see now to help you remember it forever.

im obviously not advocating anki over anything else, it's supplementary and i think should be used only for low frequency words as ive said previously. i personally read at least 40k characters a day on top of doing anki

sounds kinda dumb but suit yourself
repping the first 10k makes total sense when you know nothing/close to nothing and you want to get down the things you'll be seeing all the time rather than having to repeatedly look them up every 5 seconds
investing extra time each day for words you only see twice a year sounds like a much worse use of time
what determines whats worth it imho is the ratio of time to review vs times you'll see it in the wild
if reviewing a to 20k word 4 times over the course of 40 days pays off in me knowing it the next 40 times i see it this year, that's worth it
what you're doing does not seem worth it

its stupid and annoying when people who've been learning japanese for a few years compare themselves to a native who's been reading for 18 years or more, and given that everything in a native's life and schooling is written in the language, they've easily gotten over 40x the amount of reading practice

Is this true?
>It took me 5+ years of reading a wide variety of material in Japanese for me to really reach the level where I *felt* comfortable with my understanding of an arbitrary text. It's kind of a cliche to say that people overestimate their understanding of Japanese when they're still relatively new to the language, but it's true.Improving your Japanese comprehension will be a long and arduous process, and it's not something that's going to happen overnight because you read a few eroge with relatively simple writing. Obviously you're going to be reinforcing grammar and widening your vocabulary, but there is a deeper cultural context to the language and Japanese works of writing (encompassing things like how statements are phrased, common forms of expression, what's considered humorous, cliches and characterization "shortcuts," shifts in tone, etc.) that can only really be understood by familiarizing oneself with a wide variety of material and usage cases. In other words, there are no experience points or levels. "Grinding" eroge will produce results, sure, but it's not something you can track by kilobyte. Just interact with the language in as many contexts as possible and learn to appreciate the rich modes of expression which the Japanese language possesses. It's okay if you lack cultural context for something or run across particular phrasings/constructions you've never seen before - it's not a competition. I hope you'll develop/maintain enough of an appreciation for the language and Japanese fiction in general to come as far with it as I have. (And I still feel like I have a way to go...)

You will be able to understand everything by the 2 - 3 year mark while also being able to read fairly fast if you just read and listen. Alot of things will take a long time before you understand it completely since we aren't Japanese. If you didn't know about pitch accent, Japanese humor or customs without having any video telling you that it exists and what it is, becoming aware of those things might take a while. Unless you want to master Japanese I wouldn't care for it. You will always improve over time.
