6000 is the number in the top level exam for kanji reading/writing... I forget its name though. 3000 is more than enough for any piece of text though, 2000 for most of the shit we read.

do you mean "read" or "understand"? I seriously doubt anyone who doesn't study medicine will know what all the organs and bones and etc. are called, and still can be fluent in English. Also, I know for a fact that native speakers of Japanese can't necessarily read science books even if they study themselves if it's a different field.
