Exactly. Depends what I'm reading but yea I keep in it monolingual until I start to run into too many unfamiliar words and for the sake of boredom I'll switch to english to speed it up. Also I like the fact that you can look up words from the definition entries with the j to j dict in kindle. Really helps to keep you in monolingual.

Wizard here, it most likely won't feel like anything at all to you. To reach a level that high you have to read a fuckload, and it's very gradual improvement along the way, so by the time you reach it you'll be doing the same stuff you've done constantly for like a year or more. It won't feel very special, it'll just be like, "oh huh I guess I'm at this point now" and that'll be that.

It's kind of unfortunate in a way just how mundane language becomes. I remember thinking "I will never get bored of reading anything Japanese, because just reading in another language is fun." Now that I've read 300+ Japanese books and the language courses through my blood like English, that sounds as silly as "I will never get bored of reading anything English" does.

Oh well. With mundanity comes practicality at least.

seeing that focusing on more frequent and consistent, immersive and compelling input is the primary key to my further progression. i can't get that if i keep being distracted.
i have no idea how much i'm getting these days but it's not nearly as much as i could be if i wasn't wasting so much time.
so i'm going to start using this time tracking app to get a very clear picture of how i'm spending my time each day; numbers don't lie.
i don't have to do one of each thing every day or anything. just as much japanese stuff as i can with my undivided attention. any passive input like listening to anime in the background while browsing DJT, doesn't count for this. only time spent with my full attention on the thing. oh and of course, i'll be looking up anything i don't know or can't guess confidently, primarily using a J-J monolingual dictionary, but falling back on J-E or google when necessary.
i plan to drop the app when lots of input on a near-daily basis becomes habitual.

let's see how much i can get in the next 24 hours.

that phrase is came fr famous traditional children's song
"Hotaru Koi 蛍[ほたる/ホタル]こい(来い) = fireflies, pls come (here, to me/us/our side)".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et_by4RIQ4c

it was written and composed by a school teacher abt 100 yrs ago and we sing even now
there is no document, but probably like "butterfly likes nectar",
the old era children believed that fireflies would also like "sweet water", i guess

meaning 甘い水 is "better/best/good place/condition", (butterflies like good river = water)
so often used as "誘惑-する/-される", but it is rarely used now.

real so many fireflies flying is very beautiful, yet...

Step 1: Learn Kana
Step 2: Consume whatever comprehensive and compelling content in Japanese you want (as monolingually as possible*) with the aid of dictionaries, internet search engines, or even actual people (native Japanese preferred). Progress depends on the quantity and quality of consistent practice.
Step 2.1: Repeat Step 2 forever; if you feel something isn’t compelling or doesn’t directly aid your comprehension in listening/reading, (or even speaking/writing if you’re into that) as much as you like, then you don’t have to do it.

NOTE: Using aids in a different language is permitted at the start, but over time (though as soon as possible) you must wean off of them and start using learning aids in Japanese.

people lack motivation for all kinds of reasons many times just distraction or anxiety
its not that the desire isn't there, it's that it's constantly being distracted from by other existing habits, or even subconscious fear that they can't do it
it's not uncommon for people to break through walls of resistance they had towards something they actually did want to do, and then start going hard with enjoyment once they got over whatever the inner hurdle was
so stop with this "if you don't feel totally gung-ho every day all the time from the very beginning you can't do it" nonsense

Parading motivation around is sweet on the surface, but the reality of the matter is that people are fickle creatures and generally relying on motivation will lead you to failure. I've personally tutored about 7 people in Japanese at this point and all but 1 of them have given up due to not studying when they aren't motivated to. Like, it's really as simple of that. Some of them gave up in the kana stage because they couldn't be assed to write them out or do flashcards or do anything at all - they weren't motivated to work, so they gave up and failed. The others got further but generally quit at the vocabulary/grammar stage because reading was hard enough that it was less fun for them than it was motivating, and they didn't have the spine to keep working anyway. Ironically the only one of them who hasn't given up is the guy who gelled well with Anki and has been doing reps for a year straight now.

In short, motivation is nice. If people could rely on motivation and learn Japanese consistently that'd be amazing. But that's not really the case for most people (and those who think it is probably are underestimating their work ethic.) Preaching motivation as the be all end all, and scorning those who don't rely on it like >>21607958 is just a destructive attitude.

Also I realize that it might sound like "Wow you tutored so many people and they failed, you must be a bad teacher" but in reality I'm referring to friends who I DM'd advice/resources to and answered the questions of when asked, so it's more like a spiritual guide than a serious tutor. Not too much influence over whether they get bored and quit or not.

Sequel series https://whyisbeingazodisobad.wordpress.com/2019/01/16/2018-a-retrospective-part-1-sequels/
King Exit
Black Souls 1/2
うさみみボウケンタン
外道勇者一行 / other games by this dev (Bad End Collector comes to mind)

KAMIGE OF GAMEPLAY (some of the above games also fit into here)
DepraviA Egrigori (extreme gore fetish but actually solid gameplay)
THE HEART OF DARKNESS (dark souls style exploration game with incredible pixel art)
Nightmare Girls
Night of Revenge (literal bloodborne clone in 2d)

KAMIGE OF PORN (ill just throw out things that suit my tastes)
ヴァンパイア・ノーツ
王国の守護天使
紅獄の剣士ティーナ
討魔の乙女
なんでも調査少女RPG
ニプルヘイムの狩人
ナコの魔法と純欲の怪人 (this kind of goes with Plot since it has an elaborate and long story, and with Gameplay since it's a Tales of Symphonia clone, but the large quantity of porn is it's most distinctive quality)

NOT QUITE KAMIGE BUT SO WHERE NEAR
働くアイリがキリ斬りス - really great writing at the start and in some quests, but focuses too much on the H-scene sides of things with uncomfortably realistic depictions of rape
爆災雷鋼ライオウガー - this does some hilarious things with your standard hot wife getting NTR'd but holy fuck it looks ugly and the gameplay sucks ass
寝取られ騎士 - hilarious NTR plot with some epic meme twists but extremely buggy when I played it
MARRIAGE OR PERVERT - I feel like noting this game because it has art by a very well known mangaka and was fun, but it's not something i would really go out of my way to recommend
ナイツ・オブ・メサイア - Actually pretty solid writing and an AMAZING ost, but bogged down by what comes close to the worst gameplay I've ever seen in an HRPG, and the story doesn't really deliver like it could have (also it's extremely NTR)

No, in this day and age the west is overflowing with people who have an interest in learning Japanese thanks to anime and such. A lot of my friends and associates are the same and, since they know I am a nihongo expert, ask me to teach them (or to help them learn anyway). I oblige and they give up.

I've only attempted to coerce one friend into learning Japanese and that's just because they're a NEET who complains about the stuff they like never getting translated. Learning Japanese would make their life appreciably better and like any bro I want the best for them. But that's just one person and I'm not actually pushy about it. (Nor have they started...)

I tried a butt plug, and it felt pretty good so I would use it like once a month when I got too drunk or something. Then one night it slid all the way inside (make sure you get one with a flared base, mine wasn't very flared). I scrambled to reach in and I panicked which caused my muscles to contract and the toy went even deeper in and I freaked out even worse. I started clawing my way in to retrieve it because I obviously didn't want to make a trip to the ER for this. I'll spare you the 45 minute strugle that ensued in my anus. In the end I got it out, and I was covered in blood. Blood leaked out of my dick for a few days too so I guess I damaged my prostate in the debacle. I never seen so much blood.

I feel like spending a lot of time talking to Japanese people, watching Japanese livestreams, etc has really messed up my appreciation of DJT memes because now that I have a strong grasp of how the language actually works, it's hard to work up the motivation to care about memes or arguments. Like after seeing Japanese people mispronounce basic words like 描写, 村長, etc it gets hard to meme about whether or not people can read certain words here or what have you. It's honestly just kind of embarrassing to see beginners and beginners-who-think-they're-intimidates have catfights about dumb shit here when the truth is so clear but beyond their grasp.

I guess this is how an adult feels when they see middle schoolers arguing about pokemon or something. It's just impossible to care or feel anything but secondhand embarrassment.

English translations are a mess on a good day. Usually the best people can hope for with an English translation is conveying roughly the same information as the original with no fucking guarantees to keep wording or structure similar to the original.

This is why you should never rely on an English translation to teach you how the Japanese sentence works. It can only serve as a backup to understand the intention of the sentence if you have no fucking clue what's going on.

I'll pull through eventually because I know it's a matter of just putting in the time like I've done with reading which I also disliked at first, but I really did not expect to hate it this much.

Hey /DJT/ quick question
I just started reading よつばと!and was wondering if as a very early beginner to reading Japanese if it's better to have sentences contain furigana in my sentence cards or not? I was thinking because they are such simple and common Kanji I'd pick up the readings fast, but I didn't know if I was right in that assumption? Should I keep the furigana on, keep it on for words I may have trouble remembering the sounds, or turn them off entirely? Thanks for the help.

that's... not how it works lol
your subconscious collects data when you control and direct what's conscious (that's what learning words, grammar, beginner reading etc is. staring at a wall of japanese text as a beginner isn't going to do anything unless you consciously try to figure out what it means)
the subconscious then stores some of that information (whatever makes it into long-term memory, not everything does right away), puts patterns together, makes connections, and that shows up as "subconscoius skill"
it can't do that without being given any conscious information to work on though, which is why conscious learning is necessary first
