I constantly find myself losing momentum time and time again when studying to get past N5. Whatever the excuse, the info I learn online never sticks. So here is what I have done. Hopefully it can work as well for you as it is currently for me.

Post sticky notes on objects around the house with its respective name or anything else that stimulates your learning.

Similar to how social media platforms fight for our precious time (called millisecond marketing), as well as incorporating the language immersion theory, I surround myself with as many mental triggers (sticky notes) to stimulate thought processes directed towards learning Japanese.

For example, I look at the sticky on the fridge while eating breakfast and then attempt to make a sentence. The important thing to highlight here is I am now thinking about Japanese more often, subconsciously strengthening my memory and progressing faster with my studies without having to allocate more study time out of my already busy life. My mind is now working for ME and not scrolling through some feed. Except for this thread of course :)

i can actually give a reasonable comparison between the 3

learning japanese just takes a long time but isnt difficult

playing the piano takes quite a bit of practice and work and not everyones hands and feet work the same way and theres a lot of other musicality traits and skills that go into it ultimately

programming isnt particularly hard until u start dealing with other ppls code then life just becomes impossible in short programming hell only exists when dealing with other ppl

so that said ill rank them as follows (most difficult to least)

computer codes (if other ppl and their shitty demands and/or code are involved)
piano
computer codes on ur own as u want
japanese

Someone knowing English could probably learn to understand written German or Swedish quite well in a month or so if they kept the same pace some /djt/ autists do. remember everyone, the amount of perceived effort increases the more boring something is and decreases the more enjoyable something is. same with the perceived time something takes. “time flies when you’re having fun”

it’s percieved effort/percieved time that will make the biggest difference in whether you stick to something or not, not actual effort/time

so if something “only takes 15 minutes” but you hate it, you’re probably less likely to continue doing it than something that takes 30 minutes or more but feels more or less pleasant or even fun

I'm using HelloTalk (language partner app) and the amount of people in advice posts commenting with stupid shit like learning grammar as intellectual knowledge, learning by speaking and worst of all recommending to take a japanese course is staggering.
I attended a japanese course once and after week 3 we were still doing set phrase introductions and didn't use hiragana at all. That's when i quit because i realized that no progress will be made at this pace.

the reading (and listening) is what’s supposed to be molding your thinking in the first place. things like SRS sentences taken from your input can help even more in the beginner stages with solidifying the correct patterns. how would that be pseudoscience? it’s completely logical. input correct language patterns —> produce correct language patterns.

that’s how it be. for me though i started with mining ONLY the sentences that were just a little above what i could comfortably understand (with just one or two unknown pieces of information), and continued to work up from there as time went on and i got better. the sentences with 3, 4, 5 or more unknown words and grammar points, i ignored. it worked great.

watching anime with both english and japanese subtitles is perfect for this, because you can keep enjoying the story while farming just the sentences that you can handle.

seems like a lot now but you’ll be surprised how quickly things start to show up again and again and the amount you have to farm becomes less and less. at least if you stay consistent.

from an intellectual standpoint what he’s said is “obvious”. but there is a difference between intellectual understanding and intuitive understanding. if you were solely in your head judging and evaluating while reading it then you did not “understand” it in the way it’s pointing to.

cynics are bad at intuitive understanding because they live entirely in their heads and are not in touch with their emotions and bodies. they also habitually make assumptions, like “i already know this”, rather than listening/reading without judgment or preconceived notions, which keeps them from experiencing curiosity or interest from most things.

he's going pretty deep into a lot of cognitive science/neuroscience stuff and making connections that i too have been getting glances at, for example how intentions shape what our unconscious minds allow us to notice. and how language learning can be simplified into the process of getting our subconscious minds to turn chaotic sensory noise into meaningful patterns, that it can effortlessly process and project into our conscious awareness. and how any successful learning method is judged by how efficiently it can teach the subconscious to recognize said patterns.

i'm having multiple mindgasms listening to it. it's very exciting to see that someone else is having similar realizations as i have and going into detail with them.

It’s a real idea, but it’s mere speculation by people like Chomsky and hasn’t been proven. One potential problem with it:
You can express infinite strings from 26 characters because “abc” and “abcabc” both count as strings. You can’t just repeat yourself as much as you want in language and say you’ve created new meaning. And since there are limited words you will eventually repeat yourself.

you guys are detached from any sense of objective self-awareness so this distinction between conceptual vs intuitive understanding is invisible to you — and will remain so as long as you’re convinced you already “know” everything just because you’ve processed the concept on the most basic surface level and checked it off as logical.

an example of intellectual vs intuitive understanding unrelated to language learning but still relevant.

perhaps you would claim to “know” (intellectually) that your habitual state of mind is determined by how you repeatedly direct your attention in relationship to yourself and others. that more positive interactions lead to a more positive overall mind state.

yet instead of making choices that would reflect a intuitive understanding of that truth, you frequently make choices that encourage unpleasant and negative relations with others and yourself. while still claiming you “know” that your actions shape how you feel.

that’s someone who only has an intellectual understanding. their minds have checked off the piece of information as “making sense”, but that does not mean they’ve thoroughly seen the process actively at work in their own moment to moment lived experience. if they had, the knowledge would actually be effecting the way they live and think. not just sitting in the back of their minds as some inactive factoid.

the “idea” is not important if it’s not actually shaping your thoughts and behavior. you still do not get it no matter how many times you claim to.

i’m not speaking in terms of factoids you just learn in school or from reading an article. i’m talking about perceptual shifts, changes in paradigms that effect your whole worldview. “everyone” has experienced significant paradigm shifts in response to that information? i highly, highly doubt that.

i didn't do RTK but show me a random kanji i know at least 2 words for and i can probably give you a rough idea of the meaning, and using japanese to boot.
that's much more valuable than what RTK can do imo. no point even worrying about individual kanji meanings when you hardly know any words that use them yet.
also the english keywords can often be inaccurate and misleading, not to mention they encourage staying in the translation phase.

yes, but it's not a meaningless separation to point out what consciousness makes us capable of imo. it has real implications. if you insist free will doesn't exist without pointing this out, you risk convincing people that their pre-frontal cortex doesn't actually do anything and they might as well stop trying to make it do stuff because everything's being controlled by forces outside of their awareness -- which is only partially true.

intentions are a real thing that we can consciously influence, whether the impetus for setting a certain intention was really chosen by "us" or not (btw i know the self as most people see it is an illusion, there are many "selves" constantly fighting for significance in our subconscious minds). kind of paradoxical, but not meaningless.

so u have アルファケンタより

then next comes から that works like it does basically everywhere but ill use "ここから" as an example

as a result アルファケンタよりから becomes 1 thing now cuz

we have cool epic でも which is a particle that attaches to the whole thing (like how u can attach a particle to ここから) before it and works the same way it does in something like "アホでも天才"

wait so one of the reasons why skipping difficult sentences is important is so that you get repeated exposure to concepts and words you actually do somewhat understand, and you can strengthen your understanding of those concepts by seeing them more often which will then give your brain the foundation it needs to understand the more advanced stuff and you rinse and repeat this process, and this is also why listening is a big deal?

Same thing happened to me. Felt bad at the time and for a while afterwards. Eventually my bitterness turned into a faux sense of superiority which let me stop caring about validation because I thought so little about everyone else. I grew out of that but the lack of a need for validation remained thankfully. I talk to my friends about my interests. They know I'm learning japanese, i tell them about anime and shit like that and they're still interested because I'm the one talking about it even though they dont give a fuck about the topic itself. And it's reciprocal, I'll ask my friend about his band/music career because I know he cares about it so I care about it. If you don't have that part down pat and just yammer about your shit of course people will think you're self-centered and annoying. But there definitely is a middle ground and there are definitely people out there that you can get along with.

What's DJT's opinion on cloze cards?
Clozal)e cards are basically sentence cards plus. Example:
>ほら見たまえ、ここに君の朝飯の支度があるから
And you want to learn 支度, your front card looks like this:
>ほら見たまえ、ここに君の朝飯の[...](preparation)があるから
and you have to remember 支度. Or if you're advanced you could do it like this:
>ほら見たまえ、ここに君の朝飯の[...](準備)があるから
It gives you context and also recalling the words without only mapping them to a translation (once you manage to do your hint monolingual)
