I constantly find myself losing momentum time and time again when studying to get past N5. Whatever the excuse, the info I learn online never sticks. So here is what I have done. Hopefully it can work as well for you as it is currently for me.

Post sticky notes on objects around the house with its respective name or anything else that stimulates your learning.

Similar to how social media platforms fight for our precious time (called millisecond marketing), as well as incorporating the language immersion theory, I surround myself with as many mental triggers (sticky notes) to stimulate thought processes directed towards learning Japanese.

For example, I look at the sticky on the fridge while eating breakfast and then attempt to make a sentence. The important thing to highlight here is I am now thinking about Japanese more often, subconsciously strengthening my memory and progressing faster with my studies without having to allocate more study time out of my already busy life. My mind is now working for ME and not scrolling through some feed. Except for this thread of course :)

playing the piano takes quite a bit of practice and work and not everyones hands and feet work the same way and theres a lot of other musicality traits and skills that go into it ultimately

Someone knowing English could probably learn to understand written German or Swedish quite well in a month or so if they kept the same pace some /djt/ autists do. How did you guys start mining sentences?
I feel overwhelmed and paralyzed.
I've spent a whole lot of time learning all the Kanji and getting to 2k vocabulary in the past.
I should be reading now but i don't know what ruleset to use when mining sentences. If i were to mine every sentence i don't fully understand i'd be at 100 new cards in 20 minutes. How did you approach this when you started?

I'm using HelloTalk (language partner app) and the amount of people in advice posts commenting with stupid shit like learning grammar as intellectual knowledge, learning by speaking and worst of all recommending to take a japanese course is staggering.
I attended a japanese course once and after week 3 we were still doing set phrase introductions and didn't use hiragana at all. That's when i quit because i realized that no progress will be made at this pace.
You learn nothing from listening to to everyone in the classroom saying "whats your name" to each other for 30 minutes.

that’s how it be. for me though i started with mining ONLY the sentences that were just a little above what i could comfortably understand (with just one or two unknown pieces of information), and continued to work up from there as time went on and i got better. the sentences with 3, 4, 5 or more unknown words and grammar points, i ignored. it worked great.

watching anime with both english and japanese subtitles is perfect for this, because you can keep enjoying the story while farming just the sentences that you can handle.

seems like a lot now but you’ll be surprised how quickly things start to show up again and again and the amount you have to farm becomes less and less. at least if you stay consistent.

from an intellectual standpoint what he’s said is “obvious”. but there is a difference between intellectual understanding and intuitive understanding. if you were solely in your head judging and evaluating while reading it then you did not “understand” it in the way it’s pointing to.

he's going pretty deep into a lot of cognitive science/neuroscience stuff and making connections that i too have been getting glances at, for example how intentions shape what our unconscious minds allow us to notice. and how language learning can be simplified into the process of getting our subconscious minds to turn chaotic sensory noise into meaningful patterns, that it can effortlessly process and project into our conscious awareness. and how any successful learning method is judged by how efficiently it can teach the subconscious to recognize said patterns.

i'm having multiple mindgasms listening to it. it's very exciting to see that someone else is having similar realizations as i have and going into detail with them.

Kids are just good at language because they're just recognizing the sound patters. Kids don't even know half of what they're saying even means. They just output and see how people react and figure out what works. Chomsky was more into the way that the brain learns language on an intuitive level like kids do. I've yet to see anything that shows in the same exact situation an adult learns any slower though. It's all anecdotal and you can't really see what's happening in the subconscious.

i didn't do RTK but show me a random kanji i know at least 2 words for and i can probably give you a rough idea of the meaning, and using japanese to boot.
that's much more valuable than what RTK can do imo. no point even worrying about individual kanji meanings when you hardly know any words that use them yet.
also the english keywords can often be inaccurate and misleading, not to mention they encourage staying in the translation phase.

wait so one of the reasons why skipping difficult sentences is important is so that you get repeated exposure to concepts and words you actually do somewhat understand, and you can strengthen your understanding of those concepts by seeing them more often which will then give your brain the foundation it needs to understand the more advanced stuff and you rinse and repeat this process, and this is also why listening is a big deal?

Same thing happened to me. Felt bad at the time and for a while afterwards. Eventually my bitterness turned into a faux sense of superiority which let me stop caring about validation because I thought so little about everyone else. I grew out of that but the lack of a need for validation remained thankfully. I talk to my friends about my interests. They know I'm learning japanese, i tell them about anime and shit like that and they're still interested because I'm the one talking about it even though they dont give a fuck about the topic itself. And it's reciprocal, I'll ask my friend about his band/music career because I know he cares about it so I care about it. If you don't have that part down pat and just yammer about your shit of course people will think you're self-centered and annoying. But there definitely is a middle ground and there are definitely people out there that you can get along with.

Clozal)e cards are basically sentence cards plus. Example:

and you have to remember 支度. Or if you're advanced you could do it like this:

Here's a tip: if you want to get good at listening to certain types of terminology, like sci-fi, military, or fantasy-heavy dialogue, you should spend time watching those genres. That person probably spent all of his "listening """"immersion"""""" time watching nothing but slow-paced moe sol shows. If you watch more complicated stuff, you'll understand more complicated stuff.
