It's just the logical conclusion of current trends. Once you accept that it's indefensible that children are subject to and/or express harm or sexuality in fiction, and you pair that with the fact that your average person recognizes 90% of anime characters as children, anime games become indefensible. Even all ages titles involving characters under 18 get the ban hammer as any romance inherently involves expressing sexuality.

There are several VN-s, which don't have English translation, but have Russian (ex. Green Green), there are also some ongoing translations, but it would be good to have all information in one place.

Companies should stop relying on Steam. Assume your game is going to get banned and have a plan in place about how to sell it when (not if) that happens. If you still want to try Steam, cut most of the content out of it like Subahibi did and relegate the majority of the game to a free patch. But even then don't rely on Steam. The situation is too volatile to base any of your business plans around.

Everybody knows that. The issue is that Steam is THE store to buy games due to the sheer number of games and the regional pricing. You can see that when everytime a VN gets released, there will be a chorus of idiots and/or poorshits from turd-world countries crying for it to be on Steam. Companies are in business to make money and Steam is the biggest marketplace there is. Good thing MG has their own store or they would be fucked. Well luckily for them GOG has started accepting more VN this year. Kotonoha Amrilato is on there: https://www.gog.com/game/the_expression_amrilato

I have to wonder how much the lack of an R18 release and/or the poor initial reception to the localization plans when it was announced is hurting Noratoto. It has peaked at 37 concurrent users thus far, which while not a complete bomb is likely well below what the Japanese developer was expecting for a relatively well know title being released on Steam, especially with the relatively low $20 price point. Perhaps it was always going to do below expectations despite being well known, but it is hard to think that this somewhat well known title couldn't have done better at launch had the title been handled better.

The market is obviously still there, after all Sankaku Renai was completely unknown upon release and has a retail price $10 more, yet it managed to peak at 114 concurrent users on Steam at launch in addition to being available on numerous additional storefronts. In fact, much of today Sankaku Renai's current concurrent users were higher than what Noratoto was seeing.

Sankaku Renai in particular tends to peak during the prime time hours of Europe and North America, with a daily minimum during the Chinese prime time. This is also reflected in 43 of the 52 reviews being in English. It is going to have one of the highest percentages of Western purchases of any successful VN release on Steam.

Noratoto on the other hand is pulling more from the Chinese market. It had a bit of a higher peak during the Chinese prime time yesterday (37, vs 30 during the Western prime time) and 11 of its 15 reviews are non-English. By that measure, its performance in the West is worse than its raw concurrent peak would suggest.

To be fair it was like dozens of mistakes. P5 translation was obviously rushed.

There was this weird "us vs them" mentality around the drama of that translation too. A lot of the critics are, uh, known for their "hot takes" or whatever, and they tend to be fairly hypocritical. One of the harshest critics slammed P5 for instance but was very soft on Fire Emblem Fates, which, as most people know, is a disaster of a translation, far worse than P5. So a lot of people kind of generalized the critics and thought they were just being opportunists. Which they may very well have been, but I guess that doesn't really change the fact that P5's translation had a lot of issues.

Unfortunately there's a tendency for translation criticism to get swept under the rug because the people translating and the userbase itself seem to be at odds with one another. Neither side wants to give the other an inch and translators more often than not just circlejerk with one another on Discord which just leaves them in an echochamber where they are constantly validated and never confronted on mistakes. On the flip side though you have the userbase who can be pretty unreasonable and biased themselves. Nothing gets done. I mean, I know some people have a hateboner for Doddler here because of the Aroduc drama, but at the very least he has an open dialogue with people here, even if it's because VNTS sometimes does MG's QA for them. That's more than I can say for the majority of translators, who very often refuse to explain questionable translation decisions or are completely vague on the subject. It's a pity it has to be this way.

>Let me share three short anecdotes about attempts to secure a license with Softhouse Chara all with the same company. The first time I broached it to an industry contract, the response after multiple e-mails was "After giving some thought, I've decided to wait around to see since it's a big business venture to negotiate with a named company who we don't have previous relationship with, for a title that hasn't been started yet at this time." We're not going to try to get a license and the means/support for you to translate a game just because you want to, but come back once you've already done all that and we'll talk. So for the second time, that's what I did. I came back with the tools and work done, at which point I was asked to write up a sales pitch. So I did that too. A week or two later, I got back the response that they sent an e-mail, but SHChara wasn't interested. End of story.

>Fast forward to Bunny Black 2. For that, I was approached by someone asking if I was interested in them trying to secure the license. My response was "Not really, but you're welcome to try." A few weeks later, and I'll remind you that BB2 is a tiny game and start of work to release was like 6 weeks total, I get word that they had a call, and still weren't interested. The person who approached me then asked if I wanted to talk to XXXX to… I guess try to convince them to try harder or something? And if I was willing to sit on the project and not release it. This conversation happened January 18th, after all translation had finished, while minor interface things were being cleaned up. When the answer to both of those was no, he attempted to drag me for my lack of enthusiasm. Because it was directed towards releasing the game instead of the license.

>> No.21562842

You do wonder if MG is going to be seen as an 'annoying company' after doing something like this and get (stealthy) bad treatment. Like you could see it happening when companies keep doing the media thing because valve was retarded and didn't let their game on yet again. Then again maybe the opposite might happen too.

For what it is worth, the Mature Content Description got updated.

Original
>The game has a few illustrations with mild nudity.
>All characters are 18 years of age or older.

New
> This game contains an illustration of communal bathing, and thus partial nudity.

>> No.21562938

>>21562811
I'm sure the Valve review team just expected MG to remove the one scene and resubmit it, it isn't like the Steam page was removed like with Yotsunoha, and from Valve's perspective they figured it would be one less "risk" on the platform that isn't likely to sell anyways.

It backfired in this case though thanks to the fact that the content in question was quite tame, GoG allowing it uncut (and GoG going out of their way to highlight that they allowed it), MG's unwillingness to make the easy change and move on, and the vague and exaggerated original rejection (along with the additional lack of communication) that looked poor in writeups.

>> No.21563032

You would think the first description would already cover the new one. Is there really a big difference between "mild nudity" and "partial nudity"?

>> No.21563116

>>21563032
I think the bigger difference is the updated description highlights that it is an illustration of communal bathing and thus the partial nudity is of a non-sexual nature.

I'd be certainly surprised if MG didn't add one more announcement slot if only because they have 5 unannounced games. 2 for one and 3 for the other would make a bit more sense. Maybe they only have one Steam appropriate title, then it would make a bit more sense to announce that one title during AX and the other titles during Otakon. They did just announce Rance IX and X during last years AX, so it would still be weird though. The other reason could be that the single AX title is just that insane, but that's not something I would bet on.

Does anyone know what engine Noratoto uses and if there are any tools to repackage the .dat files?
I can extract the files using Garbro and I can see that the only way to make a restoration patch is to manually copy the translated script, I might be willing to do it if inserting text into the original isn't too much of a pain.
