I'm really enjoying the first one. I find that having things described rather than visually portrayed really adds another layer of information (this is not always the case, but I am finding it so with Marimite). I can try to provide examples if that statement isn't clear enough.

I always felt that I was only getting a glimpse of the characters from the anime, that it was more of a door than a room in and of itself. It was really frustrating. I get a very different feeling even from just the first novel.

Plus, so far it gives me that pleasant feeling one gets when reading a good book.

You are also privy to more of Yumi's thoughts of course, which are amusing as well as informative.

I can't put my finger on what's different about Shimako, annoyingly.

I find it hard to explain this last point exactly... but there were a few places in the anime at which I found it difficult to tell whether certain ambiguities were intentional or the result of bad writing/animation/direction/whatever. I don't recall ever having that feeling while the novel at all. So I appreciate that.

That's all that I can come up with off the top of my head.

Oh, and the post about canon lesbianism reminded me: I'm actually surprised at how gay Sachiko and Yumi are for each other in the novels.

I looked back at sentences that I'd pencil-marked, and most of them seem to be a case where I needed to expand my definition of a word rather than a case of grammar. So no help there.

I suppose if I were forced to make a judgment, I don't think it's very difficult. It's about school life, so the vocabulary represents that. The grammar certainly isn't anything extraordinary. It's a light novel. I think it must be dead easy for a native speaker (reader).

I should also add that as of the first volume, Hibiki Reine's art isn't particularly impressive so don't expect much from the illustrations. She seems to improve a bit by the third volume, although everyone still looks a bit manface.

The web page for Japanese Kinokuniya (I live in Europe) seemed way too hard to understand for me, but thanks anyway.
However, I did a little detective work in hopes of someone having written an English guide to order from Kinokuniya. I didn't find what I was looking for but what I did find was a similar guide for BK1.

It seems you've already arrived at an answer, but I'll add my two cents.

Amazon's shipping is exorbitant. 2700yen plus an additional 300 for each item is not particularly attractive. They don't pack the items particularly well (use a big box, leave it half-empty) so the box always arrives in horrible condition. Generally I order magazines, so that's not a problem, but when I've ordered CDs, this has resulted in the jewel cases arriving cracked (at least it wasn't the CD, but still). I've also had a few annoying problems with the company that handles their shipments in Canada, but that shouldn't affect you.

bk1 is what I normally use. SAL is reasonable, and my items usually get to me promptly. They pack the items well, and are forever sending me little coupons for 300 or 500 yen off. I've never had a problem with them.

I managed to collect a few things I have to say about the first novel, since I finished it last night. Since there are translations available, I'm not going to focus on differences necessarily, but things that jumped out at me.

It was nice how at first, when people are coming to try and get a look at this 'Fukuzawa Yumi', her classmates cover for her by saying she's stepped out. It stood out to me as an ideal example of social responsibility to a member of one's community... because Yumi is part of their class (admittedly, the fact that it's Yumi is also probably a factor), they try and protect her.

I was surprised at hyperaware Yumi is of Sachiko's physical presence. That isn't something that I felt was conveyed in the anime. I suppose I underestimated quite how much of a fangirl she was, I didn't realize that physical proximity to Sachiko made her quite that squirrely. It's rather cute. I'm also surprised that the author chose to have Yumi directly compare her reactions to Sachiko and her reactions in similar situations with other characters as much as she did. It really emphasized how important, and how unique a presence Sachiko is in Yumi's world. I find it interesting that while the west has a pretty distinct line between 'homo' and 'hetero', Japan has this convenient little box called 'admiration' that they shove all the grey areas of intense fangirling into.

I thought that the encouragement and motivation Yumi gained from Sachiko boasting about her (not really how I should phrase it, but roughly equivalent) was touching. It was well reflected in the amount of extra practice that Yumi put in on her own time.

I thought that Rosa Foetida's excitement over how Kashiwagi looks in his prince costume was purposefully incongruous. I've always felt that part of her role in the story is the token 'flaming heterosexual' (for lack of a better way to put it). This is not to say that I think the other characters are necessarily homosexual, just that if they are heterosexual it is not a defining aspect of their character (how refreshing, and unlike most young women). Rosa Foetida's overt interest in the opposite sex really underlined that for me.

Rosa Gigantea is such an immense fag (I say that affectionately). I didn't recall her admitting it so blatantly (an admission which, amusingly, Yumi failed to pick up on), but she does. Anime (though it was mistranslated in the subbed version I have), manga (even more blatant!) and novel.

I found it interesting how Yumi is so dense when it comes to most things, but can on occasion, be so perceptive/intuitive when it comes to Sachiko. Although they definitely have their share of misunderstandings, it's something that struck me when I was reading this.

One of the things I really like about this novel is Yumi's feeling of finding a group of people who accept her, and with whom she feels at home. I felt this was especially well expressed in a couple of places, one being during the rehearsal in part 2 of chapter 5. Yumi realizes that while she has been busy worrying about measuring up to Sachiko, the other members of the rose mansion actually appreciate the difference that her personality brings to the play when she plays Cinderella. I think this is an apt way of showing that they've all taken a liking to Yumi just for being Yumi, and are not judging her in the same way that she is judging herself (the latter is actually stated relatively explicitly). Yumi's feelings about being accepted into this circle are, imho, well expressed in the last lines of chapter 5 (I took a quick look at the translation for this - I don't think it's as eloquent about it but I think you'd still get the same idea).

If the version I took a quick look at on google books is accurate, I don't think you should have much trouble reading Marimite? If anything, I think the style of Marimite is easier to read, because it's more familiar to a modern reader than the style in which that version of taketori monogatari is written. Same goes for vocabulary.
