Yeah, I used the one in the guide. I'd do it for a few days, get to the point where I'd be making almost no mistakes but it didn't stick. It's mostly english words written in another script so it's really easy to bullshit your way through katakana. Most of the time it's a set of specific words that come back a lot in whatever you're reading. If you're reading Hibike you just recognise マウスピース and you don't even have to look at the characters.

I still think one of the biggest tricks to learning Japanese is just to keep going forward. If you try to master any 1 part before you move on then you'll end up taking years longer than it should.
When you get to the point where you aren't making many mistakes don't try to keep going, and don't feel content and stop studying.
Move on to the next stage at that point. Study grammar.

That's exactly how it works. If you give a class of kindergartners chairs with their names on it they'll quickly learn which is theirs just by the shape and size of the word. They won't be able to read it out of context, but here the context is narrow enough that they can learn to recognise it.
That's how it goes with katakana. Normally you're either learning vocab, where you have a fairly narrow group of words you choose from, or you're reading stuff, where most of the time you have a fairly narrow group of words to choose from. Even if you are haunted by シ and ツ in your nightmares, you can still read シャツ without issue, because what else could it be?

Common knowledge also tells us that prologues and intros tend to be significantly harder than the rest of the story. Thus, one can conclude that the intro of a given story is essentially worth a single point, and if you consume 300 intros, then you should get 300 points on the JCAT, maybe with a little supplemental listening and reading on the side. Therefore, I hereby inaugurate the "Drop It Like It's Hot Challenge": read the ENTIRE intro or prologue of a unique VN every single day, then drop it, and find something to read tomorrow. Every single day. After 300 days of this, you will have read 300 intros/prologues, and you should basically be fluent at Japanese!

What you're doing right now, by my estimate, is barely consuming Japanese media with the bulk of your actual studies being Anki, which is exactly the kind of situation that our ancestors warned us about. Learning from anime is reasonable, but the amount of language in an episode of anime is about as much as like a few pages of text at best, which suffice to say isn't a whole lot.

i think anki should only be used for vocab to reading
readings are overrated. i'd rather have the meaning of a word down than memorize the reading any day. knowing that 一攫千金 means "get rich quick" is going to help me way more than just knowing it's pronounced いっかくせんきん. the latter is basically going to be useless unless i'm listening, and even then if i don't remember the meaning it's pointless.

Then there is no point in it. Besides RTK doesn't just tell you the meaning of a Kanji it goes into a bunch of memory bullshit to force you to associate it with an English keyword a useless skills. Besides a ton of Kanji don't correspond to one clear concept like that and RTK has a ton of bullshit meanings in it and you can't deny that.
You can learn Kanji as you learn the concepts in the language you are learning. That means learning the words as you encounter them and if you want to write you can do that as well all quite easily without RTK.

Most RTK shitters never make it and most people advocating for it are dumbass beginners. KKLC is extremely shitty due to having multiple keywords, and due to said keywords often not being unique but rather shared across several different kanji. For instance, there are like 6 kanji in KKLC which all have the keyword "Darkness". It's absolutely useless for writing production cards.

Also, I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to memorize the vocabulary in KKLC. It's only there to show you examples of the kanji meanings in use in Japanese words.

Yeah, maybe it does, but the problems that come with those multiple keywords far outweigh any benefits of that.

It's very easy to learn what kanji actually mean as you learn words which use are written with them. RTK's keywords not being terribly accurate at times is a non-issue.

IF I were to go and do one of these systems, I'd do KKLC but to alleviate the keyword problem I'd add some of the vocabulary to the front of the flashcards that have overlapping keywords. So for 聞 (which probably doesn't have overlapping keywords but it's just an example), on the front it would have the keywords HEAR, ask and also vocab with the part the kanji reads in hiragana, so きく and 新ぶん maybe, then the back would have the usual shit along with the full kanji of the vocab examples. But at this point it's just pointless theorycrafting as everyone in this conversation has either done rtk/kklc or progressed to a point where they don't need to do them.
