That is to say, think about how many times you've heard someone pronounce an English word wrong, then multiply that concept by like fifty. Keep in mind that this is because they spend a TON of class time learning Kanji. They need way more class time dedicated to learning written Japanese than English-speakers need English classes.
Formal education is just much more necessary for learning kanji, and people tend to not retain a lot of things they learned in school. In contrast, written English is easier to learn just by reading.

It's relatively easy to complete the game (though you'll want to read about how 感受性 works, it's really important to go to the library at the start of the game and build it up), but the true ending is literally La-Mulana tier. There's a few missable quests scattered about and one of them is so easy to miss it's comical. figured it out. under hotkeys, click on the cogwheel. click on "Capture" and set it to "override". then click on "OCR" and check "process OCR silently" (and perhaps "automatically copy results..."). then click on "Task" and click on the "Task" drop down menu->screen capture->text capture(OCR).

then when you press the hotkey you set, you can drag a capture region over the japanese text you want to process and it'll automatically copy to your clipboard. if you're using an addon like clipboard inserter on firefox it'll insert the text right onto the opened page and you can more easily look up words. the best part about writing this post is that i can avoid learning japanese.
