Sanae doesn't so much have a mother any more. Instead she has a pro-active god as her boss telling her to collect faith and a great, great grand parent of some kind we're not even sure she knows that she descends from.

Sure, like the Yakumo's they probably act like a family though, but Sanae had to have had at some point real parents.

Hell, collecting faith if Mountain of Faith is anything to go by is basically BEATING THE CRAP OUT OF FAIRIES AND YOUKAI.

Maybe it's like Black and White, you gather faith by showing off your power in positive or negative ways. Reimu happening to have this big 'thing' for beating on non-humans that get in her way collected faith by simply kicking their ass.

Bet she just wasted that collected faith away afterwards, well done Reimu, more youkai beleive in you and will turn up to annoy you at your shrine. They never seem to donate squat. ;_;
