21361088 No.21361088 [Reply] [Original]

This must be a recent move and another step in wiping another page of history.

From now on, those older SWF files from certain nm videos are now being converted to MP4 at an output resolution matching the one specified in the original SWF, rather than defaulting to 1080p. This means SWF files with a specified resolution of 512x384 (plenty of them) get reencoded to 640x360 with pillarboxing! You read it right. Videos with an input resolution of, say, 960x720 had better luck however.

So I was wondering if any people here happened to have some of those SWF files in their possession so they can be archived. I wonder if some of these haven't already been archived to https://swf.flash.moe (it would be great).

The "replacement" is web 2.0 phone apps filled with ads you can't block that require permissions to send your mother's phone number to HQ.

It's funny that Flash has been destroyed in the name of "security", when the things replacing it are far less secure and filled with blatant back doors.

You cannot name anything better than adobe flash format to contain quick interactive content you can open with a single file.

Anyone who unironically defends the abomination that was Macromedia Flash either has their nostalgia goggles on so tight they can't think straight or is too young to remember the dark days of the Web when entire sites would be written in the shit. A proprietary, closed-source format like Flash should have never become a de facto standard in the first place and it absolutely had to die for the Web to move forward.

Yeah it sucks that it will be more difficult to view old fun Flash stuff going forward, but that's just a demonstration of how much Flash sucked in the first place. This is what happens when you rely on proprietary software--the vendor can just kill it. This will never happen with HTML5.

Mobile applications are more secure than Flash. Attacks that breach the sandbox are more rare, especially on iOS. A lot of mobile apps want to take and sell your data, but now you must invite them in like a vampire.

There is a subculture of people trying to solve this problem for interactive content. They create ``fantasy consoles'', emulators for consoles that never existed. Their ``consoles'' are intended to be easy to start working with and many have a code/sprite/music editor built in. Once you build a game, you can run the ROM file in any emulator for this ``console''. If it is popular, it is going to have desktop and browser emulators. I wish one of them caught on with Japanese doujin developers.

How do you feel about unity being the new method of distributing simple games? There's already sites like newgrounds for it. What does nicovideo use for its simple games section?

They have no general-purpose system APIs like in Java. The attack surface is consequentially smaller. They are more like a gaming console than either Unity or RPG Maker. Fewer things change a lot from version to version. You know what the system you are getting can and can't do. No need to introduce settings for graphical fidelity.

>>21361841
Admittedly, the people behind those seem to be trying to have their cake and eat it, too. I think they want the hardware limitations for creative reasons, but they also want their users to have an easier, friendlier development environment compared to a real 16-bit console.

End users don't care about this. If they did, nobody would own a phone.

>They are more like a gaming console than either Unity or RPG Maker.
Hardly. They might present that image, but it's all fakery.

>No need to introduce settings for graphical fidelity.
This isn't an issue if you're doing basically anything in 2D anyway.

>I think they want the hardware limitations for creative reasons, but they also want their users to have an easier, friendlier development environment compared to a real 16-bit console.
This is what I don't understand, because they could just use Unity and stick to those limitations themselves. Or, if they're hung up on limitations, they can stick to ones that actually make sense because they were designed for real hardware, not an arbitrary virtual machine.

I think it's just trash for hipsters. The same kind of people who use Gameboys as jewellery and proclaim themselves super retro because they own a genesis they haven't touched in the 5 years since they bought it at a flea market.

It is a simulation, but it isn't fakery. For example, PICO-8 has all of your data in a single address space you can peek and poke around.

Nah, many were SWFs which were optimized for the NND player. While they could not be played directly on their own, most could be completely decompiled for their raw content and re-encoded. For example, I used JPEXS and ffmpeg, to encode this, among others: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOPVk1H03YM

However, I couldn't decompile swfs which were made using Niconico's ersatz "Nico Nico Movie Maker".

Anywho, because of the effort involved in decompiling the swf, I imagine few were saved.

The .swf files are still on the server so archiving is still possible. You can download them with an old version of youtube-dl [1], and play them locally using the flash projector.
To download run in the cmd: "youtube-dl -u insertyourNND@mail.here https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/nm8108475"
Many NND flashes only work with old flash projector releases (latest working version seems to be Flash Player 10.3.181.34 [2]); if you want to run them with the latest projector open them with JPEXS, go to 'others'>'FileAttributes' and set 'actionScript3 : boolean' to false.

Now that's what I call a great call. I tried the Nicofox add-on on my side (running on a separate Firefox 52) and it does still retrieve the SWF files too indeed. So there's still hope. And that's great news.

However, you have to use a modified Nicofox in order to still be able to download with HTTPS (the original Nicofox only works with HTTP). Here it is: https://github.com/littlebtc/nicofox/files/2497186/nicofox.littlebtc.zip

So I took this opportunity to back up all SWFs by コウキ on my side: https://mega.nz/#!ON5RXApY!6c8VSTIGddNcDbieNEPMgexz-TgrOPsOYYLEvNGHgok
