If you have freakishly large hands, you can just hit the edge of FX with your thumb and stretch your pinky all the way out to the VOL knobs. Pretty much only lets you move the knob inwards though, and only for a bit.

Not a regular here but why does modern rhythm game not considering to implement avatar system? It's a good way to make money for the company too and attracting dumb status oriented players to circlejerk while spending money. Besides everyone love dressing up their waifu/persona up to a certain point. I used to be a O2 Jam/Audition/DDR/PIU regular in the past and well aside from DDR/PIU, it's just weird for me to start to learn play IIDX/Osu/SDVX without dressing up any character

take the button panel apart and make sure the bottom of the rubber plunger for 1 and 2 isnt covered by debris, and that the contacts on the board for 1 and 2 and clean and not corroded as well, then make sure the rubber plunger is sitting properly over the contacts on the board when you put it back together. theyre old enough now maybe the plunger has gone flat too?

Make sure the connector from the panel to the controller is clean. I recently got one that had a couple dead/spotty keys. After I used a little bit of air duster it's working completely fine now.

Actually, maybe disregard this. I just tried it out, it's not working again.
However, I've swapped the key panel to other working KOCs and it works fine on them. The problem lies within the base itself. I haven't bothered opening it up to look inside yet though.

Got around to opening it up. It's definitely loose wires going into this connector. I can get the keys to work if I fiddle with the wires and move them around.
I need to open up the connector itself and make sure everything is solid.

Hopefully this is helpful if it doesn't turn out to be the button panel itself like >>21335727 suggested.

osu! is a gateway rhythm game of the most mediocre kind.
I haven't played it in years but my memories of it honestly aren't that bad. It was fun for what it was and it has a boatload of songs so you can definitely find something you like and widen your horizons at the same time.

In place of an arcade/controller, I've also recently been renting a jamming studio to essentially play drummania. Dunno if you can get one at a reasonable cost but it's pretty fun.

Not only is 4k carpal tunnel simulator, it also encourages mashing and has a pretty awful scoring system. If you wanted to only play 4k, play Stepmania, although Stepmania is also carpal tunnel simulator on keyboard if you're playing spread and not index on the numpad, which at least approximates DDR.
