Saying that you need to go to Japan to learn Japanese, is like saying you need to go to America or Britain to learn English(a much more difficult language).

You may learn it much quicker, and being exposed to the culture has a lot to do with understanding of certain things, but being there is nowhere near a necessity.

Although you may or may not be at the kanji stage yet. The easist way to learn kanji is by finding a good book. I use the Basic Kanji Book (I'm still learning my self) which is split in to two volumes, each with around 250 kanji. They give lessons with a certain number of kanji, they get your to write each one out in their own grids and they also tell you the meaning and readings of each one. Then they give some kanji compounds which show each individual kanji's usage with other kanji to form words. The easist way to remember how to read kanji is to make flashcards or use flashcard software (I use OpenCards which is an open office flashcard plugin that works with Impress) and put those compounds on to each card, with the respective reading on the other side. The writing part will eventually become the harder part, as you may end up not writing as much as you read. Which is where I recommend a particular DS game called 'Kageyama Method: Tadashii Kanji Kakitori-Kun - Kondo wa Kanken Taidaku Dayo!' which helps with the writing side of things.

I bought My Japanese Coach awhile back.
It's actually fairly easy to grasp and very fun to play.

It will never be the same as going to Japan and listening to what you will be learning, but it's a good stepping stone.

AJATT encourages you to listen and read lots of different kinds of Japanese media, but I'm not interested in much of Japanese media outside of the otaku culture. Follow it correctly and yes, you will be able to understand news and podcasts

Why all the hating on Heisig? It helps. I learned how to read and write kanji from the first book, then used manga to learn pronunciation in context. Without Heisig learning kanji would have been a lot slower, I'm absolutely certain of it.

As for alljapaneseallthetime, some of the advice is probably bullshit "no English, no grammar, Japanese only, final destination", but a lot of it does make sense. The immersion thing can't actually do any harm, and you do pick shit up by reading and watching anime. Using Japanese dictionaries is another good piece of advice, as translating back and forth from English is a total waste of time and should be avoided.

The problem is that the first volume, heisig, in no particular order at all, dumps random **single** kanji down your throat. Can you use any of these in any context besides herp I know how it looks like? Nope. Compounds? Nope. Readings? Nope. Somebody comes up to you one day and "HEY BRO WHATS THE READING FOR 'TO WALK'" and what do you do?

Having contacts who are either japanese or are studying japanese at some higher level qualification (degree) helps a lot as they will probably be able to guide you in to starting better than some anonymous could.

I'm gonna post my general copypasta guide to the language, in case anyone feels that this thread doesn't inform them properly. It's in two parts.

First step - Learn the kana (hiragana + katakana):
Should be easy, not more than a normal study day for each at most, so it's just to get right to it. If you're into mnemonics, get Remembering the Kana (/rs/), or if you prefer more direct memorization, use http://www.realkana.com/..

Second step - Kanji:
This process will take a while, so continue on to the next steps while working on this, but it is essential if you want any written vocabulary, so please do work on it diligently. Again, if you like mnemonics, get Remembering the Kanji (/rs/), or if you prefer direct memorization, ReadWrite Kanji (/rs/) is good. If you decide to go for RtK, pay http://kanji.koohii.com/index.php a visit. There are different opinions on what exactly you need to learn with each kanji (how many meanings and readings, etc), so you'll have to decide for yourself. Just keep in mind that they work as building blocks in vocabulary, so as long as you can recognize them, you will make the most important use of them in the next step. Also, I've found that learning the stroke order helps a lot in remembering them.

Third step - Vocabulary:
Also feel free to work on step #4 while doing this one. The exact approach is even more free here, but most people usually start with the vocabulary lists from a workbook, like Genki (/rs/). And when you start reading, it's recommended to pick out words you don't understand and feel that you should understand, and make your own vocabulary lists. With vocabulary lists, your options are pretty much to either read through the lists until you feel you remember it, or use flashcard software, like Teach2000 or Anki (google).

Fourth step - Grammar:
