21273749 No.21273749 [Reply] [Original]

Hecatia's parentage differs from telling to telling throughout the countless millennia, but her parentage in Hesiod's Theogony is the most famous. Her mother is Asteria, the Titan of oneiromancy and astrology, and her father is Perses, the Titan of Destruction. Her mother Asteria is the sister of the Titan Leto, who (after being raped by Zeus), gave birth to Artemis and Apollo, making Hecatia the cousin of Artemis and Apollo.

Hecatia, who was granted honor not only by the Titans and was given a share of the earth, sea and sky, was not only awarded these honors again (and more) by Zeus after the Titanomachy, but her great-grandparents are Gaia (the Earth), Ouranos (the Heavens), and Pontos (the Seas) who aren't just divine entities but the very earth, seas and skies themselves.

Despite being a virgin goddess and never having had any children (except by religious proxy through worship as is the case of Medea and Kirke, who were called daughters to Hecatia), she has a really strange, close relationship with Zeus where she is sometimes worshiped at his side in a Consort-like manner, such as in Panamoros where the two were worshiped together, only for Hecatia to eventually be replaced by Hera centuries later. In Chalke and Rhodes, the two were worshiped together in adjoining empty stone thrones. Though nothing conclusive can be said about the nature of their relationship, Hecatia and Zeus were particularly close, especially in the eastern regions of Greece and Anatolia where they were worshiped side by side.

Hecatia, especially in the Eleusinian Mysteries, was depicted as being fairly young, compared to Demeter. While both had been described as being maidenly, it's notable that Persephone is depicted as a young woman while Hecatia wears clothing suitable for young girls, an open ungirt peplos, as can be seen in the statue called The Running Maiden of Eleusis, which is believed to be a depiction of Hecatia. She precedes and follows Persephone as she travels to and from the world of the dead on her yearly travels, and it is Hecatia who persaudes Demeter to speak with Helios to discover the fate of Persephone, and provides Persephone with company in the land of the dead during her stay there.

Hecatia in the Chaldean Oracles is an extremely important figure and is of great significance as she is the Savior and the benevolent source of souls and virtue. In the Chaldean Oracles, Soul is in and wraps around all of creation, and Soul is found in Hecatia, bestowing upon all of existence with portions of Soul as it flows from her right flank and the source of Virtue is found in her left flank, which remains within, not sending forth its virginity. Also in the Chaldean Oracles, Hecatia is the ruler of angels, which are separated into three orders: the Iynges, the Synochesis, and the Teletarchai. Hecatia's hierarchy of angels would eventually provide inspiration to Pseudo-Dionysus I in the 6th Century in his work Celestial Hierarchy and Divine Names, which would form the basis for the hierarchy of angelic orders still employed in Christianity today.

Why is Hecatia such an amazing, powerful, and benevolent goddess?

Hecatia is Zeus and the Olympians' nurse having served as a nurse assisting their births and arguably their older cousin. She's one of the youngest Titans and is also the oldest of the Gods and Goddesses of Greece.

Interesting enough, prior to the Greek Dark Ages, there is no record of Hecatia being worshiped in Mycenaean Greece or anywhere in the region, yet by the writing of the Theogony, decades after the end of the Greek Dark Ages, Hecatia had become a well-established goddess worshiped throughout Greece and beyond.

Her worship was so widespread, one could find shrines to her in the temples of other gods and goddesses, such as in temples dedicated to Artemis, Apollo, and Hermes, whom all three she is frequently associated with in mythology, and Artemis especially of these three that she is even frequently conflated with.

Both Artemis and Hecatia share many titles together, such as Soteira (Saviour), Enodia (one in the crossroads), Perseia (daughter of Perses), Tauroplos (Bull-faced, due to both of them sometimes having the head or heads of animals, of whom Hecatia would sometimes be dog-headed, dragon-headed, bull-headed, etc.), Kore (maiden), Phosphoros (light), etc.

Hecatia also received her Lampads as a gift from Zeus for her assistance in the Titanomachy. I guess if you really want to take the HecatiaxZeus ship seriously and apply it to Touhou, Clappy and the other Hell Fairies are actually the (secret) children of Hecatia and Zeus. Also, Hecatia has also been seen on amulets and magical charms alongside King Solomon, oddly enough, probably due to her magical connections, particularly in the Chaldean Oracles, and both having summoned similar(ish numbers) of demons (27 in Hecatia's case and 72 in Solomon's case).

Death, witchcraft, crossroads, child-raising, the moon, liminality (doorways, thresholds, gates, etc. so she's Okina but better).

Not only were Hecatia's shrines found in the temples of other goddesses, crossroads, in the homes above entryways, but at the gates to cities as well. Hecatia being a liminal goddess also meant she was a goddess of change, as they cross and master the boundaries of all things (so she's Yukari but better too, no wonder she's the strongest 2hu).

Being conflated with Isis too, who at one point was the head goddess of the Egyptian pantheon, it's no wonder Hecatia was perhaps one of the more frequently idolized goddesses of the Greek pantheon.

Not unless you like being stabbed, burned, and whipped.

The items frequently associated with Hecatia are the torch, knife, and whip.

The torch can represent knowledge or guidance, as well as illumination and safety. She lights the way for her faithful and guides them toward salvation, protecting and revealing those that wish to do harm before they can do the deed.

The knife isn't just a malicious symbol, but also can represent her nature as a goddess of child-bearing, wherein the knife would be used to cut the umbilical cord from the newborn infant, serving as both a representation of life and death as a result.

The whip can represent torture and has been used in self-flagellating rituals such as in those worshiping Cybele, whom Hecatia is often syncretized with, and in the worship of Artemis where men would flagellate themselves or each other in blood-letting rituals, whom Hecatia would sometimes be syncretized with as well in various regions of Greece. It can also represent domestication and could further reinforce her status as a liminal goddess as the whip has long been used as a tool to separate the wheat from the chaff, and so too would she separate those indulged in the secrets of her cults from those who cannot understand or refuse her grace.

Speaking of depictions, did you know Hecatia's earliest depictions were in single-bodied form? Typically, Hecatia takes the form of a young girl, often holding either a torch(es), dagger(s), whip(s), snakes in some cases, etc. When wielding a torch, one would be shown pointed up and alight while the other would sometimes be pointed down, sometimes snuffed out. Sometimes, she is depicted standing, sitting, or even running.

Her most famous depiction, the triple-bodied goddess, was only created later. In her triple-bodied form, she is sometimes placed with her three bodies standing around a central pillar, with each body holding something (keys, torches, etc.).

As mentioned earlier, Hecatia would sometimes be depicted with having animal heads. Though it isn't unheard of for the Greek gods to shapeshift, it also wasn't unheard of for them to be depicted as having animal heads. Not only was Hecatia sometimes animal-headed, but she was multiple-headed in some depictions as well, not just triple-bodied. When depicted as having multiple heads, the most common number was of three, and rarely was she just two-headed.

Yet in some places, she was an invisible goddess, having no form depicted at all, as was the case of the empty thrones in Chalke and Rhodes, where instead rectangular meteoric stones would be placed on the thrones instead, possibly as representations for the god or goddess that throne was associated with.
