if you get a word but didn't feel good about it you press hard so that you'll see it more often. seeing the words that you want to more often and the words you don't need to less often is better, even if it means more reps. long reps are only a problem for matt and other dumbasses that do sentence decks.

i'm reading as much as i can, i'm a full time students in a fairy hard program so i can only do 90-120mins/day though i have been going the quality approach and trying to understanding everything, maybe i will go the quantity approach and just skip everything i dont understand to natural srs as much as possible..

You can also buy your VNs off DMM and dodge the region locking. Go through jap TOR exit nodes using strict exit nodes, add DMM points through paypal, then buy the game. You don’t have to download it through tor because the raw download link you get after buying doesn’t check your region. Just start the download and copy the link and cookies over.

Fucking zoomers.

Lucky for you, there are modern VNs with higher resolutions that you can play:
https://vndb.org/v/all?q=;fil=olang-ja.tagspoil-0;rfil=lang-ja.plat-win.resolution-1280x720~1920x1080;o=d;s=rating
^ Take ratings on VNDB with a fistfull of salt, by the way. Untranslated VNs are for obvious reasons often much less popular than translated ones, and because of this they receive pretty considerable penalties on their weighted ratings (a VN with 50 votes and an average rating of 7.50/10 will have an entire point shaved off its weighted score so it shows up as only 6.50/10 in the search results, and VNs with similar average ratings with less than 20 votes can show up as low as 5.**/10). VNDB really should have a separate weighting system for English translated, non-English translated, English+non-English translated, and untranslated VNs, but it doesn't and probably never will so... Another problem is stupid cunts rating VNs based on their CG sets without ever having read them, or rating them based on machine translations.

Don't try too hard. Trying to remember words shouldn't be the main goal. The main goal of looking up words while you are reading should be so you can understand what the sentence and the story is about. Learning words is just byproduct of that(That's why I wouldn't use SRS at all, creating a card means you are trying to remember that word for some reason). So once you understand what sentence is saying, move on to the next one. The goal is to encounter and experience as many words/new words overall per day as possible.

Yeah, one by one or picking "select all/none" from menu. Kanji and vocabulary is split into JLPT levels, so you can select all from one level easily. Pic related.
I find it better than Anki for kana, might be also good for kanji and vocabulary.
You can learn both ways between kana and romaji, and also romaji to drawing.
For kanji there's kanji to/from reading, meaning, and also kanji composition and drawing.
Vocabulary has word to/from reading and meaning.

Even that aside, keep in mind that anki only really teaches you the surface level meaning of a word, that's why people here discourage is so much.

I tried grammar guides in the beginning but I found it to be useless to try and cram it in beforehand, treat it the same way you do vocab, look up problems as they arise.

It won't spike quickly but you are adding new things everyday, in the long run at least some old words will be forgotten at some point, which resets them on top of new stuff, ballooning, if slowly. I just don't get much out of that isolated kind of study.

I'll just keep at it then, I imagine bits and pieces will stick eventually. It's very annoying when you know the handful of words in the sentence enough to make sense of it but don't understand anything of the grammar side. It's like having a cavemans grasp on a language.

>that's a monster that grows over time.
true, unless you get in the habit of dead-pointing cards (killing, deleting, suspending, w/e) at around a month of reviewing or less. that way it'll be solidified enough that as long as you see it in the wild within the next 3 months or so you'll be good, and cards won't build up into monster piles.

>I realized just bumping into it over and over again in the wild helped me cement it for real in a more natural way.
this is true but i've found there are some words that just don't want to fucking stick even though i've looked them up at least 4 times... i think perhaps at that point anki is useful? like exclusively using it for stubborn words that don't seem to stick.

>How did you approach grammar in this method?
Personally I got my head start on grammar with sentence cards mined from anime and manga. I'd break down the grammar and vocab of each sentence in one card (with an english translation when I was really a beginner). Then once I was comfortable with most common grammar I stopped and just looked up new grammar when I encountered it. Btw I didn't type that post, I copypasta'd it but the guy who did write it, did sentence cards as well in the beginning. His post was exclusively about vocab acquisition.

I'm doing something similar currently, and I've picked up a few words so far. I'm still doing kanji study just to be able to remember the words better. I already had basic grammar for a long time, but I picked it up from a ton of different places because I never sticked to one resource.
Nowadays, I just look up something in the grammar guide if I don't get something but usually I can understand basically every sentence I find as long as I look up words. If I have a bit of trouble, I just deduce it from context most times since I can manage to follow the plot.
Overall, with grammar I'd advice to just keep looking it up until you're used to it. You did understand TK when you read it, though? Then it's going to be fine, I guess, because you'll understand the grammar again when you look it up in case you forgot something.

Yeah it all makes sense to me and I understand the examples in the guide but it's just encountering words in the wild I can recognize the words in one form but the second that changes I'm fucked.
It's like being able to read the word "fuck" but being completely thrown when it's "fucking" or "fucked".
I'm starting to think this might be because 90% of the vocab I know I know from the single instance in Core2k, maybe I should drop it after all and just stick to exposure and looking everything up.

My advice: Don't stress yourself. You forgot something? That's fine. Even if you forgot a lot. You're going to remember it at some point.
I don't do anki anymore myself, I do physical drills for kanji but I remember them also a lot from reading words (it works better for me physically than with anki for some reason ...). You can learn solely from exposure, yes.
Comparison of learning via exposure to a verb and learning it via anki/memorization in general:
Exposure tends to be slower. But at the same time you learn the word with a lot of different context, therefore having more of an idea what the world really means and when it's used. Also, at least I feel like it, you have more of an "abstract knowledge" of that world pretty quick, meaning if you read 翼 you think of wings instead of thinking of the english translation "wings". That makes it quicker to understand a text because you stop earlier to translate everything in your head.
Anki/memorization is very good at making you remember precise information (unless you do something with image cards, like 翼 on the front and a picture of wings on the back, but you can't do that for every word so it's kinda annoying to me), and it tends to work quicker. You don't have a lot of context until you read it though, so sometimes it can be a bit confusing, I guess.

>5 cards taking too long
Everyone that hates on Anki isn’t using it right and these posts prove it. A few tips to keep anki ~20 minutes per day despite having hundreds of reviews:
1. Keep cards super simple so you can rep them fast. Keep expressions/definitions very short, so no sentence cards.
2. Do every card under 6s using this addon:
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1046608507
3. Delete/suspend/mature cards when their intervals pass 1 month (or less). I like to reschedule them for 7000-9000 days in the future which is just as good as deleting but they’re set as mature and I can remember I learned them already.
4. Leech cards early and often at 4-5 lapses. If you fail that much just move on and hope it will click from reading eventually. If you care about every little card that’s how you get obsessive and make anki take forever.
5. Use low key anki but only with ResetEZ and NoPenaltiesOrBoosting since the other ones aren’t compatible with the speed addon.
6. Make sure everything you need to know is on your card when you add it so you’re not googling stuff during reviews.

Don't need to do this, just 1) set your default interval to 130% 2) set your interval modifier to something like 190% or 200% 3) reset the ease of all your cards to 130% in the card viewer 4) never press the "Easy" button. if you know a word just suspend it

Maybe it should be longer. I’m not sure really since I haven’t done the math on how the reviews build up and what saves the most time. If it’s a really common word though you don’t really need to keep it that long since chances are you’ll see it so many times before you get to it’s 1 month review it’s not even worth. If you’re adding moderately uncommon words maybe it should be different. The scenario I’m thinking of is adding a ton of words, 40+ per day for a month or so and how to sustain that for over a month.

looking back, i've always been very 気まぐれ with anki. it was rare for a word to reach an interval of >3 months before i deleted the whole deck and started over lol. yet as long as i saw those words in the wild at least within the next few months after that, i could remember it just fine.
a large majority of my anki-assisted vocab was never reviewed for more than 2 months yet here i am, still knowing those words because reading/listening kept them alive after the initial incubation period.
keeping cards for eternity is usually overkill. it's like keeping an already-hatched chick in the incubator for like 10 more months. if anything you're stunting its growth at that point

The true benefit of mining with Anki is to review a word a couple of times to separate it out from the sea of unmemorable dictionary lookups you did throughout the day. Just review it 5-6 times to give it a kickstart in your memory and let reading take it from there. Anki should not be a long term memory bank.

It was fine for a week, but eventually the Kanji got super complicated it was difficult to remember the words, + meaning based off of the Kanji. I lowered it to about 5 new cards a day, but then it hit to a point where I spent so much time on review that I was drained mentally before I got to new cards.

I started taking notes but it only helped a little. I tried asking my friends whom had an easier time learning kanji, but they all can read chinese so it makes sense why they picked it up quicker since they know the meaning just looking at the symbol.

When I started I did like 1000 lazy kanji then core 2k and it started getting tough for me once I started seeing kanji I hadn't seen in my lazy kanji deck. If you aren't familiar with kanji at all, when you see a new word, getting your brain used to its kanji, its reading, the meaning of the word, plus the other kanji in that word and its reading/meaning is way too difficult to do all at the same time. Best to do some lazy kanji like >>21264880 says. Once you do that core and mining will be a lot easier. All you have to remember when learning a new word is the reading and meaning. Learn the kanji radicals/components. Those are the things kanji are made of.
Like this: 日(sun) and 月(moon) together are 明(bright). The meaning doesn't always add up, though, that's just an example. But when you know the radicals, kanji aren't a mess but rather a heap of radicals smashed together.

Buy protein shakes, the lower the carb the better, aslo protein bars too, be aware of the ones they load with sugar too.

Eat a protein shake and a protein bar for you breakfast and dinner, and eat a good, non-junk food meal at noon. if you feel hungry either drink another shake or a bar (not both).

Try to never go past 1000 calories per day, at the beginning it might be hard to obtain, but after 2-3 months you will lose a good amount of weight to boost your mood and you will start feeling full all the time.

I got interviewed by Steve Kaufmann this morning.
He basically poopooed the idea of trying to actually get good at languages. I think I gave a pretty good argument, but then he cut it off and said we should wrap things up.
I was super taken aback because I thought the interview was going to be a lot more friendly. He had a combative tone, even though I think I was pretty chill and "everyone has different goals, we can all live together happily" in my attitude
He was like "most people don't have more than 1 hour a day to spend on languages" haha
I understand that Steve has different goals, and I think that's totally fine, but I was surprised that he showed such disapproval against the idea of actually trying to get good. he gave lip serve to the idea that "everyone has different goals", but his attitude clearly showed that he thinks its stupid to be ambitious

All the people who actually know their stuff usually stick to that weekly question thread they have. It's pretty much the only thing worth reading on that entire subreddit.

He's lost me here. If I am only looking up a word every 3 minutes then I'm going to be passing by many many lines of text in which I have like 5% comprehension at best. How is that going to teach me anything? I don't get it.

Matt has actually little clue what advice to give to absolute beginners. Reason is that he can't even reconstruct how he did his early language learning himself. Evidently it was much more textbook based than what he is advising people to do though. And who knows what methods he actually used when he was eating his bento on the toilet.
