I have done nothing to study Japanese but read and listen to Japanese for the past two and a half years. I haven't consumed anywhere near as much as I should, but it's the only thing I do.

My Japanese has consistently gotten better on a month-by-month basis and I can read pretty much everything I want to now, aside from Mareni, as long as I have a dictionary.

"Input input input" works.

Any method worth its salt is based on input with additions to try to make it less tedious.

First of all, make sure you're actually stayed focused during those 3 hours and not getting distracted for 30 minutes on DJT each trip to the dictionary. But besides that the expectation when doing early reading practice isn't to know every word you see, it's to be blasted with an essentially random series of words ranging from extremely common to extremely uncommon that you will through exposure you will over time remember on a deeper, more meaningful level than any flashcard program could hope to match. Your goal here isn't to see a Japanese word and recall an English keyword for it, your goal is to understand Japanese, and that's not gonna happen if you're stuck in Anki all day.

I read most of Tae Kim when I started out and also skimmed through DoJG a couple times.

I should have worded that a little more clearly.I was studying Japanese before two and a half years ago, but it included things like Tae Kim and a little bit of Anki. So I'm not an example of "input input input" resulting in (possibly slow) progress for a beginner, just for the intermediate stage.

Like today I was in the library and saw those 100 year old Japanese textbooks and you need to realize that somebody actually went through the trouble of writing all that shit and tons more people went through the trouble of trying to learn Japanese through that shit. my view on the yomichan thing is that, the problem isn’t “it’s a pop up dictionary and those are bad, period”. the problem is that usually when people use those, they often just swipe their cursor for the translation for one second, then keep going. barely getting a look at the word, barely digesting the meaning, barely letting any new knowledge sink in.

you don’t have to use google translate to look things up. it’s fine to keep using yomichan as long as you create some kind of LEARNING RITUAL you do every time you use it on a word, rather than just that one second flash. for example
1. notice any familiar kanji 2. make a casual guess of the meaning or reading IF a likely guess comes to you, if not don’t force it and skip this step 3. check with yomichan, feel good if u were right 4. repeat word slowly out loud, soaking it with the meaning. 5. repeat the phrase it’s in to soak it with that context an transition into the rest of your reading.

typed out it sounds like a long process but all of that could take about 10 to 15 seconds total for one word. and that’s worth it imo to significantly increase my chance of remembering it the next encounter. plus, still less work than google translate.

If you expose yourself to Japanese text every single day for at least a couple of hours a day, you'll be able to pick up approximate definitions/common word usages, and grammatical patterns quite easily. It'll be hard at first, but it gradually gets easier.
By the way, my suggestion on learning katakana is to write lots of Russian, German, Indian names down in katakana and then try to see how certain kana differ from each other (likeク from ケ or ツ from シ). I admit that it took me lots of practice to memorize this set of characters, even more so than memorizing the Kangxi radicals.
After that, you should work on memorising the jouyou kanji and consuming as much material as possible in Japanese.
Tae Kim or Imabi might help you with clearing up what certain parts of grammatical constructions mean, but you'll pretty much have to go on your own while reading manga, eroge, and stuff. You can never really be sure about what sentences mean on their own in Japanese, which is why you should pay close attention to their context.

Hi all, I just joined. I recently started learning Japanese.

Here are my learning objectives that I wish to fulfill within 6 months or so

1- Be able to converse in Japanese, even though I don't live in Japan and don't feel comfortable talking online (as in voice chat, text msgs are a-ok).

2- Being able to watch and understand anime without subs (specifically, Yu-Gi-Oh!)

3- Be able to read and understand trading cards (again, Yu-Gi-Oh!)

4- Become fluent in general Japanese. Low priority, because someone told me that this is a bad goal to have as a main as its so far and distant that you can't work much on it. Its still very much an aim of mine though. People also say that you should learn domain-specifically. As in, if you're learning to be able to read a book(s), then learn words in books, their applications etc. Keeping a general approach is not a good idea, they say. I like this concept, since I have precise things I want to be able to learn in Japanese. I will still be doing general japanese side by side a bit so I can improve my overall language afterall.

Exactly. For most reasonable vocabulary goals (let's say core6k but I'm pretty sure it would be true even at core2k), you will finish *maturing* the vocab deck sooner if you mature the RTK deck first, than if you only did vocab. This is total time, mind.

Another good approach would be to start both in parallel, and for each RTK card you've matured that then comes up in a vocab word, consider replacing the RTK frontside keyword with the vocab word (but with the relevant kanji blanked out and replaced with kana). Also, if that kanji has multiple readings, once you encounter a vocab word which uses the other readings, add that to your new Japanese frontside.

This is more important for kanji whose keywords are either abstract, overlap with other kanji, or reflect only an uncommon nuance of the kanji in question. It probably isn't necessary for basic shit like numbers or shit like tree or whatever.
