Why the fuck are you playing on lunatic if you can't get past stage 2? the later stages will rape you even harder, just learn the game on normal/hard then bump up the difficulty when you get better. I can't give you a timeframe but if you can consistently perfect stage 1-3 and have practiced 4-6 then you have a decent shot at a 1cc, build your stockpile in 1-3 then use it whenever you get in trouble in stages 4-6.

I wouldn't base it around how far you can progress in a game since you're treading in unfamiliar territory so it's normal if you're struggling on a harder difficulty if you're used to a lower one. I would say that if you find yourself no longer feeling challenged by what you're playing currently, then increasing the difficulty is fine even if you then find yourself having a hard time as you'll get acclimated after practicing enough.

Wasn't perfect with my bombs but even if I had been, I still wouldn't have stood a chance. For Parsee's midboss card, her sprite doesn't damage you after the pattern starts. You should position yourself at the bottom of the screen under where she spawns and then you can just slowly move to the top and back down with the bullets trailing behind you. You'll kill it very quickly.

For the flower card you have the right idea. The most I can offer is to try and keep yourself aligned to end it as quickly as possible.

For the clone card, the real Parsee always shoots the small bullets. The bubble clone disappears for a moment before they trade places so you can use that as a visual reference for when you should stop shooting so you don't accidentally cause a bunch of bubbles to spawn.

If you're planning to stick with ReimuC make sure you keep your options aimed towards her during her final card. You were wasting a lot of moments you could've been getting extra damage in to finish it quicker while you were circling around her.

There's no real strategy aside from read better and react faster, I don't think. You need to be very comfortable with using vertical/diagonal dodges and have to train yourself to see the blue bullets before they reach the middle. I'm sure it's patch. When I remove it, replays that are fucked play as they should. I know MoF has desync issue internally, but they are usually easy workaround for it, like choosing and earlier stage. But with the patches some of my Reimu playthroughs don't even advance to the next stage once the stage is over, It just shoots me back to replay select. My Marisa replays seem fine though (as long as I don't start on anything past stage 3 for both cases).

I haven't done anything out of the ordinary with regards to installation. I think its just the combination patch and the MoF bug causing this fuckery. It's annoying but that big of deal. I just need to play the vpatch.exe without the patch if i want to play all of my replays.

Your choice of EoSD/PCB/IN is probably the "easiest" place to start for a beginner, but you can start with whatever you want (avoid LoLK though, it's intentionally much harder than previous games). I'd recommend credit feeding until you get a normal, credit feeding clear, and then after that doing individual stage practice while also doing regular attempts at running the entire game. Start on normal, it's completely achievable for even someone who hasn't played much in the way of STGs before, and easy will probably do more harm than good in the long run.

IN and MoF are rather beginner-friendly. They have some gimmicks but it's easy to get a hold of them. The two play very differently though.

You can do an Easy run to get a hang of the whole thing but it's shit. Try practicing on Normal until you manage to clear the final boss even if you use all continues. Then use stage practice mode to practice individually on specific stages until you git gud.

You can start with any game if you don't think you'll get discouraged by some of the harder ones, otherwise the easier ones that you can clear relatively easily without needing to learn much about any specific gimmicks are LLS, MS, EoSD, PCB, IN, MoF and TD.

Play as far as you can with bomb spamming and continues, then use stage practice to memorize routes for the stages you've unlocked and learn the boss patterns. There's a useful practice tool called SpoilerAL for most of the games which lack a feature that lets you practice individual spell cards, and it'll make it a lot more convenient for learning specific patterns that give you problems. Some moron that lurks here will tell you that using it to practice is cheating, so feel free to ignore them if they show up.

It is unbalanced, though. The whole design philosophy of the Touhou games is to adjust the PCs power to the overall difficulty of the bullet patterns. In DDC and UFO, the patterns are extremely hard, but you get insanely powerful shot types, bombs, and extra resources to make up for it. In TD, the patterns are easy, but you get no extra lives. In the newhus, the patterns are lunatic-tier even on normal, but you get infinite lives. Etc. SA, on the other hand, has the weakest shot types(not even a true homing Reimu), the weakest bombs(MoF is arguably worse but half the SA ones deal less damage anyway), a mediocre amount of extra lives, and actually using bombs punishes you by reducing your power(again you can bring up MoF, but at least that game let you store another one and gave more P in general as well).

Going by that pattern, SA should have some relatively easy patterns, but it doesn't. Instead of cranking up the difficulty but giving you the means to deal with it, it just throws you to the wolves with nothing. It feels like shit to play it because you're so weak and have to deal with so much. It's badly designed and less fun to play than other touhou games as a result, unless you're an LNB autist who doesn't give a shit about anything like that anyway.

A perfect clear gives like, what, 12(2+10 extra)? So even if you die exclusively on boss patterns you're guaranteed like 2+8. That's plenty. You just have to pace yourself and not lose all of them at once.

It may just be a case of needing to level up your dodging and reading abilities through playing a lot more. I struggled a lot with my initial pointdevice clear since I only had a single 1cc under my belt, so it took me something like 1.3K deaths to no bomb the entirety of it with Sanae on Normal mode. When I eventually returned to do the other shot types after having cleared all of StB and DS, I was able to do it in like a third of that just from natural improvement through playing more.

For EoSD and PCB I learned LNB first, then made some 1cc runs with the other shots for when LNB runs weren't getting me anywhere.
This worked for those 2 games because the shots are balanced, but I don't see it working for some of the games I have yet to do.
That said, having to learn different shot specific stuff is fun depending on the game. That's the point of these charts other than tracking your progress I believe, extra motivation to learn and enjoy stuff that otherwise you would not.

For me I had an easier time by trying to focus very, very low on the screen, just looking at the bullets that are directly in front of you since the next bullet to dodge is always going to be visible right ahead of you. When you try to look at the general "trajectory" of the line of butterflies you'll die, but if you focus on them one at a time it's easier. I didn't get super consistent at it but I felt like getting that kind of tunnel vision for it was helpful. Hope that's clear, it's hard to explain in words. Like >>21268827 said there's also the high-on-screen strat but I never was very good at it (though I only played on Normal).

On the topic of end spells that suck, trying to 1cc Magic Team in IN is pure pain. I keep dying on the last spell every time (that is, when I don't or resett over stupid deaths on Keine's stage). The first webm is dodgeable in a vacuum, but it's the first time I had this happen to me so I just ate it. If I had to guess, it looks like the pattern preceding the one that killed me is bugged in such a way that killing the last magic ball during it triggers the next pattern immediately ; and of course, the next pattern in line had to be the fastest one when this happened.
Now for the second webm, I've got absolutely no clue. Reimu is just too slow to be completely in the clear if Marisa happens to be too close. Remember your position when you hear the sound of the suns spawning: one big sun is aimed at you and the rest spawn in other directions at constant intervals. You don't necessarily need to rush to dodge the first suns in order to avoid the second release. I'd say you need to pay more attention to the blue bullets than anything else and to dodge diagonally.
That said, it's a very difficult card on a very tight timer and you will more often than not be unable to capture it and be forced to time it out.

Demo is very fun and I can't wait until the full game eventually releases. Music is quite pleasant though I'm not overly fond of the stage 2 boss theme. I think ZUN should consider changing stage 1 though. The pacing feels way too slow and it doesn't feel like enough is ever going on to keep you engaged. Can definitely see it being something people complain about in the future when they're stuck replaying it.

Characters all feel great. Reimu feels a bit weak when you're at low power compared to the other characters but seems fine once you're at full. Marisa's Master Spark seems to allow her to move even faster than previous games when you're using it which is a very welcomed change. Youmu doesn't feel too different from TD and I liked her in that game so that's cool with me.

Wolf seems like the best general purpose animal to go with. It's especially helpful for Youmu since it gives her way more range on her charges when you're at low power which is very nice and the increased duration on Wolf hyper is nice.

Otter I'm not sure how to feel about currently, possibly may be useful for bomb spamming through shit but I'm not sure if the trade off compared to Wolf is worth it. The shield you get from the hyper is alright but I'd still rather Wolf or Eagle over it currently.

Eagle is interesting and I definitely think it has potential to be quite good. It's really nice to use on Marisa since it returns her very iconic Infinite Penetration but I don't particularly care for the Eagle hyper compared to Wolf so far. Opinion may change after playing more.

My issue with picking Otter is that you give up the significant boons from Eagle and Wolf. Marisa already feels like she may struggle with stage portions since her lasers feel a bit mediocre if you aren't using Eagle, and Youmu's charge feels quite limited without Wolf increasing the distance it travels and radius it covers. I also find myself opting for the Otter hyper the least, so having an increased duration on it doesn't really help me as I'd prefer having longer lasting Wolf or Eagle hypers. You always get two extra spirits after you let a (hyper-)roaring run off (borders breaks won't spawn them). These extra spirits do not seem to correlate with animal spirits you had or collected during roaring (which only serves to extend the current roaring).
As you said item spirits works differently : those that served to trigger a roaring will appear as real collectible items after the roaring (run off or break), and any item spirit collected during the roar appear immediatly as collectible.

Secret animals seems to work like regular spirit except that if they served to trigger a roaring, you will also get one extra animal and one extra life piece item spirit when the roaring runs out.
