yes! absolutely yes. random will get you accustomed to strange chords/patterns that will make the jump from 10s to 11s and from 11s to 12s waaaay easier.

play with random turned on at all times and you will improve quicker than your average player.

Gonna go against the grain here and say that starting on random is counterproductive. Early charts, especially modern hypers, are designed to drill core skills through rote repetitiveness. This is why said charts have little replay value late game. Transition into using random for most charts around lvl 9-10.

idk about that, i played up until 7s nonran and then switched to ran only and had the worst time of my life adjusting to such a change. it was honestly so fucking cancer hard and made me want to kms 50 times a day but once i got used to it i went from 5th dan to 10th in the span of a few months.

this is why i believe starting out the game with perma ran is better, since you dont have to suffer the change to ran only afterwards, which is insanely hard, because you have to backpedal at least 3 levels to "re-learn" the game.

If you start playing ran when you can barely play a 2 you will have a rough time from day one. If your problem is that transitioning into random is that shift is difficult, well, yes it's a difficult game. Quit being a bitch. But doing it from the outset will really only turn off players. At least by the time you're playing 9s you're already invested.

You might as well think of DP as a whole new game. Anmitsu is basically required, which makes timing a lot harder. People's average scores reflect this. Pattern recognition is very important. Most people play it a lot slower. The hard songs are fairly often older charts. Many songs that are easy SP are very often insanely difficult DP.

DP is uncharted territory for the vast majority of IIDX players. It's not uncommon to see those that can clear the hardest SP has to offer and try a level 7 as their debut into 14K and drown. It requires completely different muscle memory.

Another thing to note is that playing DP a lot will not make you any better at SP.

If anything I'd say that matches up pretty well, the older players moving on to dp to challenge themselves with something refreshing.

Is there a good alternative to LR2?
I kinda want to go back to playing BMS but dealing with LR2 is suffering.
At least an easy installer where I can just drag my songs, open the game and play?

On Linux my only option is angolmois which is super minimal.
No song select interface. No fast/slow. It also generates its own fonts that break on non-ascii so don't even bother with Japanese titles.
Otherwise, it at least has basic grading, changeable scroll speed, ran and mirror.

Coming from DJMax, is there a good guide on how to start with IIDX? I have Betoraja, dig the song lineup and have the cash to drop on a FP7, but I don't know how to go about improving or what habits to pick up/not pick up.

I recently got into playing doubles and that had my attention for a while, but I kinda just fell off. I'm getting older and my body just won't let me go as hard as I want to.
Button games like IIDX aren't really a better option because I've got some fucked up wrists from having broken both of them. I can't really play anything beyond 8s comfortably.

Probably, up until a certain point. Pretty sure high ranking players have FC'd plenty of songs on modded drums. A lot of people say the Taiko Force 5 is better than AC. Not sure if that's because AC taiko cabs tend to be beaten to shit or due to how insanely sensitive the force 5 is.

Youtube taiko drum mod. People tend to use cork boards.

everything below an arcade drum will not be good enough to take you past a certain point but that point is pretty high if you have no knowledge of taiko right now, so a ps4 hori drum, for example, is a decent starting point

Sanwa buttons or samduck if you want a cheaper button but I've never used samduck myself, I just hear they're not too far off sanwa. If you got honeywell switches you'll want to upgrade to Omron. Not sure about the AC knobs he sells but Copals feel fine to me and I've had plenty of time on AC hardware.

I do have a PSVR. It's actually a pretty neat accessory with the 120hz screen, low latency and 3D audio even on games that aren't PSVR native.

Maybe I'll try playing Taiko with the headset, might be interesting because my TV looks blurry even with all post-processing turned off.

I think one of the downsides of BMS is just finding good charts though. Idk if its just me but finding charts without some sort of fuckery (ending being extremely hard or insane offbeat note placement) is pretty hard. the Satellite scale helps a bit since it has some level of quality control, but its still pretty small
