I think Luka's lucky to have a (pleasant) visual meme to keep her alive. Rin and Ren certainly didn't have anything to generate much interest except as background characters.

You could see this as an offshoot of yukkuri (which I think is finally dying). I'm pretty sure the whole thing started when someone naturally tried drawing a yukkuruka.
