as soon as you stop caring about retention rates and stressing about whether you remember all the vocabulary and grammar points asap the better.

personally my Japanese learning is entirely stress free. I don't worry about remembering shit and just let it happen naturally (plus SRS of course) but I don't give a shit if I get one vocab item wrong for 10 times in a row or sometimes still get Kanji readings wrong.

In the end I care more about understanding what I watch / read than playing flash cards with the vocabulary contained in the sentence in my head. This is the ideal language learning environment. Care about the messages, not about the language.

The real problem with language learning is that apart from the very start the moments where you suddenly understand something you didn't before become less and less. Instead it's slowing down to an unnoticeable crawl of improvement that you will never notice on a day by day basis.

If you could compare your own understanding to that of half a year ago you could tell the difference much better, but that's really hard to measure retrospectively unless you have set up benchmarks for yourself.

No one needs to use Anki if they don't want to, but Anki can be used in different ways as well.

For the core deck I shifted to combine vocabulary with sentences by putting the example sentence on the front with the vocab for each card and just focus on comprehending a word in context.

But I do separate vocabulary from mining where I don't do this. It's just that for me personally the Core vocab was a pain in the ass to get to stick if I just go from word to meaning and reading. I didn't feel it was worth the mental anguish either of trying to be perfect on every vocab item there.

All the other guides out there are even more godawful. The really good thing about both of these guides is that they encourage reading and listening ASAP and warn against wasting a lot of time on beginner resources, explicitly stating that beginner resources will not teach you Japanese. Getting bogged down on beginner shit and not understanding that language is acquired through input is, imo, the #1 reason that most people fail.

I think if we're going to choose guides to recommend to people, we should be choosing ones with the sort of philosophy that is most likely to lead people to success.

I suspended every word I was certain about the reading of on sight, and I also suspended a bunch of words that turned into leeches.

the n1 quiz words are pretty much a random sample of "n1 vocab" though, so if you were assuming that I already knew it all, that's assuming that I had a good coverage over n1 vocab in general. of course mining from a quiz is dumb. though, ironically, this quiz's jlpt data contains far fewer errors than anything else, including the source that jisho uses. it's pretty funny.

So when you are decently familiar with a kanji from reading, you can just add all of the words using it from the dictionary into anki. It turns knowledge of one or two words into knowledge of 20-30 words. If you only add words with kanji you already know it takes no effort at all. I don’t know why I wasn’t always doing this, it’s much better than slowly adding them all in mining.

I know people who've read 50 VNs and don't know Japanese. It's just that in the Japanese learning sphere everybody wants to be known as a language learning genius who you should listen to so they grossly overstate what they can do while simultaneously cutting down on time they spent learning. I could tell you right now I can pick up any book and read and understand it without taking out a dictionary once and it'd be kinda true but it's still not being truthful because I know I am far from being fluent and that my understanding of many things isn't perfect or anywhere near native level, and that is without even starting to talk about my Japanese production abilities. Whenever somebody talks about how fucking amazing their Japanese is while not actually being capable of writing properly you can be sure they are full of shit and certainly don't know Japanese. Consider this, many people believe you only need to know 2000 Kanji to be practically fluent and you can find this number as the learning goal on so many articles written for beginners and languages learners just starting. You think the people who wrote those articles thought they themselves were idiots full of shit?
It's just inevitable that once you spent a year or two on something and notice yourself being better than 95% of other shitters out there that you start building an ego, despite still being a shitter yourself. To summarize I guess, those people are on mount stupid.

the biggest possiblity is just then lying about how much they've actually consumed as Japanese instead of as English

i know people who learned English by watching youtube for an hour a day for two years and that's way less than reading 50 VNs

Context makes it extremely easy to cheat on reading words. This is why I think sentence cards are not a good idea if your goal is testing your ability to read words written in kanji.

Yeah grammar takes a while but when you've read through tae kim, no matter how well you've read it, you will still be lacking. The real understanding of grammar can only come with immersion. Reading a grammar guide gives you a quick start so you don't have to learn japanese like babies do, but anything beyond rushing through Tae Kim starts to get diminishing returns. Therefore you should just immerse and it will come

I also use Japanese definition, at the very least I always cross check but 99% of the time the English definition is fine. In the first place though, usually I can ignore the definition and just learn the word from the context as the place I mined it from is right there in the card.
