hey my fellow otaku are you working on any passion projects? e.g video game,manga,film,anime/animation,ect

if so how is it going?

>> No.21185485

>>21183817
I've kind of stopped doing those, which I am not very happy about. Nowadays my passion projects are open source software. I guess there is less embarrassment if you release useless software than bad art or fiction. Making vessels for content is more casual than making the actual content.

that sounds super nobel, giving people more power and a platform to better express their creativity. though i wouldn't recommend giving up on making content yourself, just do it t as self indulgent expression and you will find more joy in it rather than for any other value.

First and foremost, learn how to draw regular before drawing small. Most of the fundies carry over, especially coloring and shading.
The game's also a big cheater and renders stuff at 480p instead of the typical pixel art 240p, so there's double the room to work with.

We also got away with doing pretty limited animation by just having a lot of the animation be Super Robot Wars style sprites sliding around a skeleton, which was probly harder to program than it was to draw; Proper animation takes forever so you fake it.

Competently written Fate fan fiction can be interesting, as certain official spin-offs prove. Do you plan on writing it in English? It better not be based on FGO, though.
>Have most of the cast of characters plotted out (even a saber face)
Tell us more. Do you have any character designs you can post?

>> No.21190709

>>21190578
>Do you plan on writing it in English?
It would be free for my native language and the (DRM-free) English version would be paid, if only to cover the costs of competently translating it. My English is good enough but I still commit certain mistakes and have enough textual and grammatical tendencies that I hope a more competent or at least fluent speaker will be able to help me with it.

It's not based on FGO at all, there would be more parallels to the original work and Fate/Strange Fake than anything.

>Character designs
I have some of them, I wanted to keep the discovery of their True Names a secret just like, in my opinion, it should be, so there are certain hidden names.
Saber would be a Saberface in a green dress, but the personality would be more aloof and lazy. She would also be around the same age as Saber Lily. I wanted to go with haughty and boisterous but differentiating her from Nero proved to be hard, and I believe that the CG when she is summoned and she's slumped over, sleeping while the MC looks at her in disbelief would be a nice contrast to the original Saber summoning CG.
She'd not be completely incompetent however and would lie about her True Name, using someone else's name from her family to justify the power she possesses.

Ruler and Rider would be related, and also related to Saber's true identity. Ruler would be designed extremely closely to the historical person he takes after and would be the protagonist for the Prologue, as a way to ease in the reader. Regular old classy guy in his 60'ies with a big beard. Rider would be a 6 year old child he takes care of and doesn't talk much. I'm considering that there is a Ruler class in this HGW due to the Clocktower wanting to keep tabs in it's development.

Lancer would be an indigenous warrior from a famous Opera, having three acts in accordance to how the Opera develops. As it progresses, he becomes more and more Avenger-like.

Those are the characters I have fleshed out the most. It's silly writing stuff out like this and I've even gotten their skills all fleshed out (Only one of them is higher than B rank, I don't like how nowadays in FGO you have [Extremely Specific Skill] EX because instead of having multiple Noble Phantasms, they have to make it as a skill) but putting pen to paper like this helped me a bit. So, thanks for asking. I'm trying not to spoil everything because it might be too autistic and I'm already taking the gamble to post this in the first place.

Eh it would be more of a doujin thing really. I fully expect people to just pirate it and would surely take a major financial hit regardless.
It's still very much in the planning phase so I haven't looked into it in any serious form.

>>21191075
>Are you going for a more comedic tone with this Saber?
Comedic wouldn't be fully correct, it would be more of a foil into making the MC act. I was thinking of reversing the roles of the Shirou/Saber relationship. I hope to strike a good balance in the SoL/Serious ratio because that's one of the parts that makes the characters feel more than just walking plot devices.
>I think I know who you mean.
I'd be surprised because the reason I chose him as a knight class at all is due to how there is no proper weapon he uses referenced in the Opera, he had a very minor level of Eternal Arms Mastery and was fitted into the only remaining Knight class by his botched summoning. I like to draw parallels and contradictions to the original work but don't wish to rely on it too much since it just becomes cheap.
>Don't worry about minor spoilers.
Since it's still mostly in my head I can't really say much, I keep adding and removing characters, but I can say that the Assassin would be Saint Longinus. In Brazil, he is summoned to find missing objects in everyday life, in exchange of three jumps. His summoner is a wheelchair-bound kid and each of the jumps the kid can achieve during his physiotherapy sessions represents a Command Seal. He's an Assassin due to being summoned in Brazil and always being able to track down his prey. He uses his lance as a walking stick and takes the form of an old man.
Again, this kind of stuff is way off in the future and it might never see the light of day.

The official guidelines are here: http://typemoon.com/copyright

They appear to place no real restriction on the field in which TYPE-MOON derivative work can be circulated unless it lies "clearly beyond the scope of doujin activity," so throwing it on something like DLsite (where a lot of other Fate stuff appears to actually exist) would probably not encounter any problems.

I'm working towards making an online library of "otaku text." Basically, I'm trying to get my hands stuff like catalogs for Comiket and other doujin events, fanzines, hobby magazines, old websites and blogs, old out of print doujin works, newspaper writings about otaku culture, and any other types of media about otaku, especially old shit. After I get a decent amount of stuff, I'll compile all of it into an easily searchable database (maybe like a booru?), and put it up for anyone to see. there is also the option of making your own music even e.g yume nikki songs mainly are small jingles on loop for the most part.

I know this isn't the topic of the thread but I'm going to post this anyways because OP had a Yume Nikki pic.
I recently played Yume Nikki and I'm very confused. Not by the symbolism or the deeep meaning of it all, but rather I am confused as to how this became a cult classic. It fucking sucks. I was told the best way to experience it was completely blind, so I did, or at least I can say I tried not to google anything. There is literally no possible way to find everything in this game without looking something up because of how fucking obscure everything is. Oh it simple, all you need to do is navigate a fucking maze, take the door out to a void with no landmarks, go this specific area and theres a 1/3 chance that a guy will randomly spawn there and you have to do a fucking dance in front of him, and then 1/64 times he will give you the item. Or something like that. It's fucking stupid. There's no point in trying to follow any leads or take notes on things because of how bloated it is with completely meaningless bullshit that leads nowhere. I stumbled upon this train car in the middle of nowhere. I went in, it was moving, so I waited a a minute for it to stop eventually, but it never did so I figured it was just another random thing thrown in to make idiots think there was a secret meaning behind it. "uuuuh, the train which doesn't have rails underneath it, represents that she feels like her life is going off the rails, and uuuuh, trains also represent not being in control because when you ride a train the train conductor decides where you go, not you, deeep bro" Later, after many similar things happening, I decided to just google where everything was, and apparently you have to sit in a specific seat for a specific amount of time to get to a new location. What the fuck was the guy who made this even thinking? Correct me if I'm wrong, because I didn't even bother to finish the game, but even IF you managed to find all 24 effects, there is ZERO indication anywhere that you need to drop all of them in the door room. I assumed that being able to do that was just for convenience, so you wouldn't have to scroll through all the useless ones. There is no reason you would ever drop the useful effects like the bike, and therefore, literally nobody could ever finish this game without looking up how, and thus spoiling the ending for themselves. I will admit, some parts were very atmospheric, its a very interesting idea to be walking around in someones mind like that, theres just one little problem, and that problem is that this game fucking sucks

>> No.21218579

Surprised this post isn't a lightly touched-up pasta. Yes, the mechanics make it hard to discover what is out there. They require either luck and a lot of time or more probably reserve engineering (loading up the game in RM2003) or a guide. I think what people who recommend you to go in blind mean is closer to "find as much as possible on your own first, then when you are banging your head against the wall look it up in a guide ". I have actually never finished Yume Nikki myself because I tried to do everything myself. Eventually I was fed up with it and bored and I think I somehow lost my save file. I watched the ending on YouTube. I've intended to replay it "soon" since.

It would be an interesting challenge to keep the dark, disorienting and surreal atmosphere, but still make it realistic to 100%-complete on your own. Has any spin-off of YN tried to do it?

Is 2003 the easiest RPG maker to use? I had a pirated copy of VX Ace (that I've sense deleted because I didn't feel I needed it) that I did nothing with, but bought 2003 when it was on sale for a few dollars on steam or something because of hearing that it was the easiest to use and you need virtually no programing knowledge to use it effectively. In the time sense then I've not really delved into figuring it out and making a project, but if I were to would I be best using 2003? or should I pirate a newer (or older, like 2000) version? I think for what I want to do the limitations of 2003 and earlier wouldn't be a problem.

By means of being a NEET. Sadly, without a trust fund it is not sustainable. I think the best long term solution for creative people of the otaku variety is to create a source of income that lets you work from home for less than 40 hours a week. I'll tell you went I do. What's the point? How is it better AniDB, MAL, etc.? I can tell you that the website's layout looks vaguely unpleasant, like the spacing is the wrong places. Images not loading until you scroll to them kind of sucks. I understand you want to save bandwidth, but it still sucks.

>> No.21245690

The biggest feature we have right now that MAL doesn't is a machine learning-based recommendation system. Other than that there's a lot of smaller incremental changes over MAL like better interfaces in places and having a much faster site. Also, it's not down all the time unlike MAL (which is down *right now* for reference).

We're wroking on adding support for VNs and adding more data that MAL doesn't have right now as well.

Can you elaborate on what you don't like about the layout?

>> No.21245806

>>21245690
I'll tell you the two things that are the easiest to put in words. The content sits too close to the navbar. Most of the screen is blank when you're browsing the top list.

I don't see how you can compete with VNDB unless you have the same insanely thorough level of tagging or have cross-media recommendations (VNs to manga, etc.). What I would like to see in an AniDB/MAL competitor is a VNDB level of tagging for anime and manga, especially short and doujin manga. We are now in a strange situation where porn doujinshi are far better classified than non-H doujinshi.

>> No.21245829

>>21245806
Tagging is something I'd like to have but it's hard to do since you need to have quite a few users and they need to be quite dedicated to tag everything and keep the tags consistent. Same thing with cross-media recommendations really.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll see if I can adjust the navbar thing. The top list is still a work in progress, so that'll be fixed eventually too.

I'm the other guy who is working on the project.
I guess you're probably right about the spacing, if I understood you correctly you're complaining that the content isn't more vertically centered on your screen when you open the page.

I agree that we're probably not that appealing to people who are using other systems, though this project originally came to us because we didn't know what anime to watch and decided to build a recommendation system, then the idea of a MAL competitor just came naturally, since we'd need the data and ratings anyways.

As for using machine learning for tagging, I think that'd be pretty hard, because the computer doesn't have anything to base itself off of, except for the synopsis.
Even if what >>21245853 is hypothesizing was possible, manga can't really be read because we'd need to have all the raws in our system, and perhaps OCR them, etc.

It might be possible to tag things in relation to other user's preferences. But you'd need to have 90% tagged already, and this would not really be accurate.

How do I write the start for a story?

>>21247862
If you haven't figured out your story enough, then you won't be able to finalize your story's start all too well. You can write the best opening you think you can write, but once you get into the heart of your arcs and have a better grasp of the themes and setting, your former best may be shit at that point and won't be a fitting reflection of the story you've written.

The best you can do now is start as close to the interesting part of your story as possible. If you have a page or two of words (or more) that lead into the start by telling the reader that character X has had a normal life, try cutting out that part (or whatever equivalent filler / info-dump it is) and imply it with less. Of course, there's no rule to writing but to break as many rules as you can once you've mastered the ability to follow all of the rules. So if you have enough finesse you could turn a boring start into something worth reading, but that's not the most useful advice when starting out.

However you lead the story, it should be something enticing and intriguing for the sort of reader that would like the rest of your story. If you start with the promise of an action-packed thriller and keep that going for a while / couple that with a cover / art / title that reflects one style, but it ends up being something entirely different, then you're not doing yourself any favors. There's merit in subverting the reader's expectations to great effect, but at the start the reader has little to no expectations, so you should keep that in mind when writing your "first impression".

tl;dr: write something that works and perfect it later. If you have to ask "how" then you're probably not capable of doing the story's start any justice, (but you will be if you keep it up with hard work and guts).

>How do I write the start for a story?

The beginning of your story will probably be one of the hardest parts to get down on paper. But persevere and you will have started something with a definitive beginning that you can work off of. And if you read it and don't like it, then that's fine (this is why we have second/third drafts).

To get things started, I think recognising how NOT to begin your story is just as important as finding the perfect way to begin. So here's a few examples of "Bad" (i.e. overused, cliche, boring, etc.) beginnings:

>MC wakes up late for school
I know that you have all seen this at least once or twice in a popular series. It's easy to start at the beginning of the MC's day (coincides with book's beginning) but I would avoid this altogether unless you were going for a twist of some sort. If you think of any great story they don't really follow this format. Imagine if the first Star Wars film started with Luke Skywalker waking up and realising he's late for school. It doesn't add anything to the story. This is usually true for any other examples. What does this tell us about the setting? What does this tell us about the character? (other than that they are bad at keeping appointments). Avoid doing this.

>Info/Text dump
There are good stories that use this method (i.e. The Lord of The Rings) but as a beginner you should avoid piling on tons of exposition onto your reader. It’s better for the book to let the reader discover whatever world they’re reading about through the story rather than having them trudge through a short history of the world you’re making. In the Harry Potter books, Harry doesn’t know shit about magic to begin with. That’s why he has to go to Hogwarts to learn about it. And when he learns something new about magic, so does the reader.

>Not starting with your MC
This works in conjunction with the first bit of advice. Some people like to start their stories with other characters that may (or may not) play a crucial role within the narrative. But to be honest you should always start your novel with your main character. Sometimes writers like to introduce a character that dies in the first few pages of the book as a sort of “hook”. Don’t do this unless you’re writing a murder mystery or something along those lines. In every other instance it detracts attention and precious time away from the main story and the MC (and any other character that doesn’t die right away or actually has a place within the story).

Forgot text.

With those examples of bad beginnings out of the way, let’s get into “Good” (e.g. Effective) ways to begin your story.

>Start in the middle of action
This beginning can be effective in propelling your story forward. Starting in the middle of a particular action (for example, one character has been shot by the MC. The ensuing scene is the “reaction” to the MC’s “action”) gets the reader right into the thick of it, and helps the writer to bypass any false starts in the story. Using Star Wars as an example, the first scene of A New Hope has the rebels on the run in a small republic cruiser while being chased by a gargantuan Imperial Star Destroyer which dwarfs it in size, and is currently bombarding it with lasers. Dropping your reader right in the middle of action is a great way of hooking them into the story proper.

>>21253693
>Start at a later point in the story
This is similar to the last point but has more to do with the overall story. This is essentially describing a scene or moment before a major plot point, decisive battle or even the conclusion. This combined with our previous point is another great way to hook the reader, as once this scene has caught their attention, you can then leave the reader in a state of suspense and double back to the chronological beginning of the story. The reader will be more likely to stick with the rest of the book if they want to find out what happens after the aforementioned scene, especially if said scene does enough to spark interest in the reader.

>Be a little mysterious
Some of the best stories start by presenting a mysterious statement or idea. While you can argue that this might be truer for mystery stories, a great way of beginning your story is presenting a mysterious conundrum or problem for your MC. This can be very effective, especially if the conundrum is relevant to the overall story. Asking a question, (i.e. Question - “Why is the sky blue?”) and then having the rest of the book be centred on answering that question, (Answer - “I dunno. Aliens or some shit?”) is a good way of directing the reader into the rest of the story.

And that’s all I’ve got for the time being. At the end of the day these are just suggestions. None of this stuff is 100% guaranteed to make the beginning of your story good. There are plenty of other methods that I haven’t mentioned.

The important thing to do when writing is to… well, begin. Start writing right away. Get all the ideas in your head out on paper so that it’s tangible and real. Then once you’re done writing, go back and write it again but better. This is what is known as a “second draft”. And once you’ve gotten rid of the crappy stuff and kept hold of the good stuff from your first draft, go back and write it again but better.
And once you’ve done all that, congratulations, you have written a story.

Hope all of this helps.

Go for it. If there's anything I would say you 'should' do, I would say that you should start off writing short stories with similar ideas and themes to whatever you had in mind for your big story. If you can write Japanese, then yeah, https://syosetu.com/ will probably be alright for what you had in mind. If you're stuck writing in English however, then I'd recommend Royal Road (https://www.royalroad.com/)) as there are a lot of people who start off there doing the equivalent of serialized updates to their stories and building up a fanbase.

Also if you need help with worldbuilding I'd recommend World Anvil (https://www.worldanvil.com/)) because it takes you through the process of putting together a whole world (what rules dictate it, people that live there, etc.) and making sure everything in it is categorized and makes sense.

Learn more about the engine you are using, if you aren't using one then start to use one. Game engines make game development a hell of a lot easier especially if you plan on using 2D/3D graphics. Programming is a must but game engines have their own languages you have to learn. Unity is the most popular engine out there so I would get started with that if you want to dev.
>I'm also unsure if I can even git gud with it. Should I continue to pursue this?
You can get good with it if you put in the time and effort to learn something. Some people can learn faster than others so don't get bummed out when you seem to be learning slower than other people.
>The fear of this path resulting in a time waste with no achievement pushes me back.
Life is short so a lot of people are naturally insecure about wasting time on something that will result in a failure. But you have to keep in mind that understanding our failures allows us to improve and grow in our trade. If you want to make a good game, you're going to have to make a lot of shitty games first. From those shitty games you can find out how better to optimize code or what kind of design choices were a bad idea. In fact you might not even finish a shitty game, you might just remake your own game a lot with a bunch of revisions. That's fine too. The idea is that you are learning from your mistakes so your end product comes out the way you want it. Just keep working on your game anon. You can do it.

You can get your critique right now: It's not any different from the loads of other RPG maker games using default assets and default battle system.

If what makes it different is the story, then write that out first and show it. You won't really be able to make some sort of uniquely interesting generic RPG that anyone else hasn't made using default stuff, so it's in your best interest to learn how to make custom stuff though using programming in ones that support it or ripping the code from something else. I'm not saying don't make a test game with default stuff, because you need to see how hard it actually is, but don't expect it to be something distinct enough for people to say "it's surprisingly good"/"it's shit". You can get by on unique art assets too, proven by the many HRPG games out there.

You don't necessarily have to agree with it. The great thing about writing is that, if you, as a writer, feel that advice like this doesn't work for your story then that's fine. You can go in a different direction. If you can come up with something that does the opposite of this kind of advice but works for your story, go for it.

At the end of the day, writing is all about cutting out all the shitty and cliched parts to make something that works. If something doesn't work, get rid of it. Perfecting the overall story is what matters most.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I'm having a hard time figuring how to write since I never wrote anything in my whole life, guess it's finally coming back at me.

Looks like you're better fit to carry the torch of Thunder Force than SEGA will ever be, definitely feels like there's some inspiration from it there. Not the biggest fan of sidescrollers but I'll check it out, it looks impressive, anon!

If you're looking to pursue this writing thing a bit more seriously, then maybe after brushing up on your basics, you would benefit from a grammar-checking software.

I personally use ProWritingAid, which can be used for free (get around their word limit by chopping your story into bits and pasting them over several tabs).

Good luck, anon!

>Is reading short, original fanfictions a good way to start analyzing?
Read professionally published works (from mainstream, traditional publishers). Good fanfic exists, but it's very rare.

Thanks anon!
I actually got a quote from Sega how much it'd cost to just license the Thunder Force IP 7 figures is way too rich for my blood

Tables are ~300 USD IIRC; Bring your own decorations and stuff. Some conventions also have you pay a processing fee even if you don't end up 'winning' a booth, but I don't think that would apply there. You might have to have a Japanese address to send all the paperwork too, Comiket was pretty strict about that.
