これだけで勝てる! 麻雀の基本形80 -> for learning about tile efficiency, you can find a torrent for this one
ウザク式麻雀学習 牌効率 -> this is a new book which deals with similar topics, you might wanna check it out (paper only). if you get it, write us a review
麻雀 定石「何切る」301選 -> wwyd problems, this is the next level after fukuchi's 80, you can find a pdf in the archive
おしえて! 科学する麻雀 -> this one gives you all the basic theory, teaches you the importance of being first, the importance of defending, etc

if you read and learn all these you'll be intermediate level. also, keep in mind that reading books won't automatically make you better, you need to keep playing and racking up experience. when you deal into someone recheck whether you really had a hand worth the risk of dealing in, when you are unsure what to discard, whether to riichi or dama post here, etc.

I only see a digital version for the original, not the おしえて version. That book is famous for being one of the least straightforward mahjong strategy books, that's why they made the おしえて edition. I haven't read the original though, so I can't comment on whether it really is that difficult.

Worst case: you'll have to wait for them to reprint it or release a digital edition. This is just how it is with mahjong: a print run is less than 10000 copies (less than 5000 is common iirc) and when things run out, they don't always get reprints.

>> No.21191851

>>21191746

Chiitoi dora dora is 6400, and pretty much any closed hand with two dora will be close to mangan anyway.

The issue with chiitoitsu is that even if you have lots of pairs, it is deceptively slow to tenpai. Your ukeire drops hugely for every shanten you advance. Even with a jihai tanki, you simply have a very small number of winning tiles available and you are, at best, usually at the mercy of where in the wall (if at all) those tiles are. Other players may still choose to hold onto them as pairs or triplets, or may fold entirely with genbutsu, so it's not a guaranteed win. As many pros and authors have noted, modern riichi is a game of tsumo, and maximising the number of tiles available is very important. This is why modern strategy books give the exact same advice to avoid chiitoitsu if a regular hand is feasible. If a regular hand is too slow - for example, if you have pair shapes like 1133m8899p - then first consider toitoi, and then you can consider chiitoi.

Sorry to spawn in this conversation but damaten chiitoi can't be worse than toitoi being at the mercy of feeders and all if we really talk cautious players destroying hands because of late kokushi tiles in seemingly pairs rounds.

>> No.21192401

>>21192329
That comparison is only really valid at tenpai, but even before getting to that point, toitoi is typically faster by virtue of the fact that you can call tiles to advance shanten. That's not to say you should just take any toitoi. There are strict rules for how and when you should go for it, and when you don't meet those criteria, that's when you consider chiitoitsu. Even so you wouldn't often have high hopes of getting to tenpai first, let alone winning.

As for the mention of damaten chiitoitsu, if you're first to tenpai with chiitoitsu and it's worth less than mangan you should generally riichi immediately with any wait, even a random middle tile, because digitally it's not worth waiting to switch your wait to a jihai or suji or something. And if someone beats you to tenpai, just betaori.

I'm not super experienced, but I open when I have a lot of dora and I can easily put together a yakuhai or tanyao or something to open with, when I got dealt very close to a high-value yaku like chinitsu, or if I'm in 1st place by a huge margin and I want to just shit out fast cheap hands to keep my lead to the end.

Riichi is a very closed game though, when you open your hand you're cutting out a lot of potential score. Your default move at the start of each round should be to just stay closed and go for tenpai, working in cheap stackable yaku like pinfu and tanyao where you can. You choose to open when circumstances allow for it. Got two dragon pairs and a single in your starting hand plus the first couple go arounds? It's probably fine to open for them, it could turn into a little/big three dragons and if not, you can just get a cheap fast win.

Why do I fail to get tenpai more often than I succeed? At the start of a game I'll usually see if my hand is suitable for pinfu, tanyao, dragon pon, or a straight and build it accordingly but I often exhaust the tiles before getting a winning hand or online someone will just win before me. What's the trick?

>Why do I fail to get tenpai more often than I succeed?
Given that mahjong is a four player game, you'd expect to be winning only 25% of hands on average, or less because of draws.
>At the start of a game I'll usually see if my hand is suitable for pinfu, tanyao, dragon pon, or a straight and build it accordingly but I often exhaust the tiles before getting a winning hand or online someone will just win before me. What's the trick?
Don't get tunnel vision towards yaku. Play by efficiency, keep your options open, and if all else fails just stay closed and call riichi.

I got an Amos Gabin off amazon.jp a few months ago because the YMI one was out of stock and had been for months, I highly recommend it but I haven't heard anything negative about the YMI either. I have seen a few people say that the Amos sets are painted better than the YMI ones though. Amos is the company that makes all the major automatic tables you see in events, so they're a pretty major brand.

It only cost me like $7 more than the YMI set after international shipping, so check your options!

I'm learning tile efficiency, and since honor tiles are at the bottom of the list,I just end up throwing them out for the whole game. Half my draws end up being automatic discards and half of my discard pool is just honors. Everyone else is already in tenpai while I'm just starting to change my hand. How the fuck do you deal with honor tiles in any sensible way?

>> No.21226986

>>21226844

You can always chase yaku that can use honor tiles, aim for yakuhai by cutting guest winds first. Redundant tiles that give no increase of tile acceptance can be cut before yakuhai tiles

Try speeding up your hand if feasible by calling, although I've heard before "I'm focusing in tile efficiency, so I don't care about calling yet" well eat shit then.

After 150 rolls, you can buy any one character outright.
To do that, you need to spend $250 with the first time purchase bonus stuff.
Doing so will also get you 150 rolls, which should also get you 7.5 characters on average (but you can get duplicates that get converted into some other currency)

There are two alternate hands (both cat paws), only 2 riichi BGMs, all tables are just single color palette swaps, same for the tile backs...

Apparently the Nip side is dead slow because everyone just plays on Tenhou, so they were asking for the servers to be merged so they can queue with the rest of the world (i.e. China).

Same thing happened to me with a chitoi hand, with a choice of discarding either 2 man or 1 pin. No one tossed the 1 pin and the round ended with another player who riichi'd with a 1 pin in his melds. While I shouldn't be surprised that everyone went into defense, still dissapointed with the outcome.

More or less the same one as the one you linked, AMOS but a bit more expensive.
Yours is $40 for shipping and handling to a total of $80 while the one I looked at from Rakuten was closer to a $100.
The blue set is about $60 in shipping and handling:

No, that's the one with blue backs that's nearly twice the price with shipping & handling than the "Take" one I was looking at.
Crazy how expensive the blue backs are really.

Just played a game where I was 4th in the last round, me as dealer.
Won 3 games with 1-2 yaku (2 open tanyaos) and ended up second place in the end. I feel so dirty, but I finally managed to get adept since I only needed 6 more points for it.
